Edited by: Major Stormer on 11/10/2006 10:58:56 My lvl 1 setup was...
kestral, 3-4 standard missile launchers with light missiles
2 civ shield boosters (funny yes, but "fitable" with my skills at the time.
some cap, shield stuff, dependent on what you like.
The most important things are those standard launchers, they will cruise you through lvl1s.

When fitting your ship, drag the relevant Ammo over the gun in question and then release. Assuming the ammo fits (small in small etc) the ammo will be loaded.
Which one to buy. This is dependent on what you're fighting. Look at the damage that the ammo causes and then try and find the resists of the enemy targets and pick ammo accordinly.
The amount of time your ammo lasts is dependent on the amount of ammo the weopon can hold, it's rate of fire and how often you use it.

The capacitor works more like the mana bar in other games, actually, heh. Modules use its energy, and it recharges itself slowly over time.

For Caldari, you want to invest in either Gunnery skills (hybrid turrets) or Missiles. You eventually will have both, but figuring what you want ahead of time will help you.
That's the offense.. Now the defense. Caldari has excellent shield technology, use it. If your shields drop and hit your armor, you are gonna be hurting (and paying through the nose to repair it). You want shield hardeners, shield boosters (try to get tech 2 as soon as possible) and capacitor battery/booster (forgot what it is called but recharges your cap faster between 11%-20%)
Then you have your utility stuff. Afterburner, webifiers, warp disruptors, NOS, etc.
Missiles have their advantages, but also disadvantages as well. You can use them up close or at max range (need to do a little math to figure that out). But you won't get critical hits with them, the rate of fire is slower, and if you firing 50km+ out, it will take a few seconds to hit the target.
Hybrid guns (blasters or railguns) hit immediately and have a chance to critical for mega damage. High rate of fire, but will be affected by target size/speed and range. If they are too close, your gun will hit for nothing. Same if it is out of range.
Caldari ships are said to be the easiest to fit into, and grow very very quickly in effectiveness.
I fly Gallente ships.

I started playing a week ago, flying Caldari as well. Do yourself a favor and upgrade from the Condor to a Merlin or Kestrel as soon as you can...I picked up my Merlin for 250k, which isn't that hard to make if you're reprocessing loot and selling the more expensive minerals.
To get the Merlin, train Caldari Frigate to level 3.
You'll immediately have a much better ship and a much easier time equipping stuff and running those missions.
