So I've really been enjoying running missions, did a tiny bit of mining and ratting, and wanted to try industry/research before my trial ran out and it was time to make the commitment. Only to discover that, although there are manufacturing facilities available, there isn't a single materials or production (or, I think, copying) lab available in my starting region (Verge Vendor) in the next week! Is this normal? I didn't think VV had one of the major trade hubs; where do I have to go (I who am not at all ready for 0.0 space) to do a smidgen of ME/PE?

You're trying to do manufacturing in a high density area, which just isn't very likely to happen because of the amount of people there. If you move to the more quiet areas you'll have more luck but understand that Material slots will be VERY difficult to find.

If you are in no immediate hurry for the research, you can add your job to a slot and it will be added to the queue. Your research will start when it is your turn without you having to be there.
If you are in a hurry, unfortunately, keep looking.

Note that by "high density area" Caleb means "Empire space" (Empire as in not 0.0).
Seriously, across several different regions, the number of stations with queues lower than ten days (and this was back when the numbers sorted properly so it was easy to tell at a glance) were few and far between, even in lowsec space.

Yeah, it almost makes me sad to hear old verge vendor lampooned as too 'high-density.'
I think it's gotten out of hand. The queues are particularly hard, IMO, on the new players who want to try out mfg, and they're the ones least likely to be able to make it out to 'low-density' (aka 'die-quickly') space.

That's bull. I am new, 3 weeks. I have found several systems that have maybe 1 person in the que at any given time. What you need to do if you want to manufacture is to look around at other systems. I left my original system on my second day out of curiosity of low sec space. never went back to my original space, and been enjoying it ever since.

Asimov: Is that manufacturing you're talking about? We're talking about material research. Let me see if I can name all the regions I checked... Heimatar, Derelik, Metropolis, and one or two Amarr ones as well. All of them with queues of ten or more days in every single station.

I be embarassed, yes i was talking about manufacturing. I also checked material research though, and there are several around me that are open. There aren't as many as manufacturing, but they are still there.
