I had a brief discussion with another player a couple days ago about if there's a "Smuggler" class in-game. He stated that their used to be but that it was phased out? I was looking to run a character based around that archetype. Any suggestions? |

well it's just a sub class of hauler. You use cloaky or otherwise hard to catch ships that transport valuable/illegal goods across space.
It's not something you generally do as a primary career. Most people use alts specifically trained to do it, though you could probably make a pretty penny carrying goods to specific combat areas of low/null.
Seeding warzones is extremely profitable, but the risk matches the reward. |

I want to agree with what Tsukino said but add that there are no "classes" in this game. It may seem like I am arguing over semantics but I feel it is an important distinction. What you do and what you train are not locked together as on inseparable thing. You can train to fly any ship or do anything in game. You never get locked into anything ever. If you decide that you want to try something different it's likely that many of the skills that you have trained already will carry over and you can switch up your training at any time. Nothing that you have trained previously will be lost or work against you.
So there are things in game that are illegal like drugs which are called combat boosters. I would imagine that you could make isk off of selling them however it's not something that I've looked into. The skills that would be needed to do that are mostly market skills and hauling skills which would be the same regardless of what you decide to buy, sell or haul. So you will never train something called smuggling but you could become a smuggler. |

There are no real "archetypes" in this game. Basically speaking.... you jump in a ship, fit it a certain way, and that is your "class."
What your profession is depends on your actions... and even then it is pretty ambiguous.
For example: I am an weapon-slinging "outlaw" with a penchant for logistics, trading, and/or exploring.

Altruistic yet bloodthirsty mercenary industrialist part time explorer here.
Yeah we don't have classes here that sense , what we have are a myriad of roles that you can fill depending upon the skills you have trained , the ship you are in, the modules on the ship in question and the activity in which you are engaged.
The more skills you train the better you can fill a given role or the more roles you will have available to you.
smuggling isn't really a thing in and of itself here, it's certainly something that is done but generally as part of something els.
exploring for example requires you to get your loot back to a trade hub/industrial base before you can see any profits from it , the good stuff is found in low/null sec so you will have to get it past the locals.
If you like the idea of clandestine play then think about exploring null /low sec.

I completely understand the classless system EVE achieves. I guess I'm looking to become a hauler who dabbles in production. Looking to eventually make my way to low/null sec to seek my fortune on the fringes. Anyone wanna link me to a decent "Hauler" thread and/or resource? I'd like to get one that i know is decent as opposed to wading through the BS on the internet for hours and hours. |

E-Uni Wiki is the best all-in one resource.
They have regular wiki pages http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Hauling
but you can also find "class notes" which can be useful for digesting the information http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Hauling_101
As for smuggling, it's less about carrying illegal goods past the cops without being arrested and more about carrying legal goods past pirates without letting them steal your stuff. Stocking low-sec stations that Faction Warfare corps base out of could make you good money but you will be competing with jump freighters so YMMV. |

After a while your Career title will grow with each new skill set that you train up.
And yes, having a smuggling career title would be great but alas, CCP just can't seem to make it work.
