I'm using IE, but although I clicked the link I dont seem to be affected.
I cant find the crss.exe thingy in the windows registry, and I also searched for ~.exe. Didnt find anything. Ewido anti spyware found nothing, and neither did avg.
Is it safe to assume that I wasnt infected because I only clicked the link on the forum, and closed the window popping up as soon as I saw the malicious url?
Would it then be safe to assume that you have to click the link on the malicious page itself?

Well, there are things CCP can do. Please note the recent news item from Kieron, and the many insightful posts in this thread from users who know what they are doing regarding information security.
And for the record (person opinion only), I don't believe Tom H would do this himself. I personally believe his account was in some way compromised, unfortunately. I don't usually discuss bans, but I think it would be obvious that he can't post using his account right now. So please share with him what you have noticed today in the hopes he can get himself sorted out as soon as possible, and assist him in getting his machine squared away. ___

I believe it's an exploit (now a couple of weeks old) in IE7. If you aren't using IE7, or have it fully up to date, you shouldn't have problems.

For the Firefox users, the Firefox 2.0 Release Candidate 2 is available. First thing ive noticed is that the tabs look cooler, and this message is getting spell checked as I type (by Firefox). :)

Thanks to the great moderator team we have this was handled as fast as it could, and we are working on ways to limit the damage these attacks can do. But you should all still be very careful with what links you press and such, and get a good internet security package of some kind, as kieron wrote in a recent news item.

If there was no ~.exe and AVG (up to date) found nothing then you are indeed clean.

Well, www.mozilla.org probably isnt compromised. :) Then again, its possible to write some javascript to display something else than the real URL when you mouse over it. Only works with html though, so not in these forums. :)

good work keeping the forums clean, I know how hard it is, as i'm an admin/mod of about 6-7 different forums.
I had 1 attack last year that nearly killed off 1 of my sites, had to report the guy who kept hacking accounts
Still all is well these days, you guys are fantastic mods, shame i'm too busy or i'd apply

Forum access should be preceded by a loading screen advising any and all users, logged in or otherwise, to beware scams and links, and check the url of what they click before opening it. If needs be, instructions for Copy Link Adress use could be added under a "More>>" link. This might irritate some users, but it will definitely give a heads up to everyone.

One thing that would help the situation a little would be if this board had flood control, preventing mulitple postings within lets say 30 seconds would at least cut down on the massive number of these type of threads posted in a short time scale.

It just works for me. I get words underlined like in MS Word and can right click them and get spelling suggestions, or add the word to the dictionary.
I installed the 2.0 RC2 version in its own directory though, and not over my old Firefox installation. It still works with the old bookmarks and settings - it shares them with the old version.
I checked the site, and found something about the spell checking:
--- Known Issues
This list covers some of the known problems with Firefox 2 RC 2. Please read this before reporting any new bugs, and watch it regularly (we'll update it as new bugs are found in the release).
Spell Checking: Dictionaries for several locales can't be packaged with the builds, and must be manually downloaded by selecting "Add Dictionaries..." on the shortcut menu. New dictionaries are regularly being added to Mozilla Add-ons, so if you don't see the particular dictionary you need, check back later. In future releases, users will be offered the opportunity to download dictionaries the first time they run the product (see bug 349945). ---
So try that and see what happens. :)

Hows that only thinking of my convenience? Seems to me it pretty much thinks of the convenience of all legit players who use these forums. There's an ingame newbie channel that all new players join for the first month so it's not like they'd be cut off. They can still read the forums and once they buy the game they could then post.
Cuts them off from assistance? You don't do your name justice
