Although level 2 missions aren't the way to riches, you should be able to accumulate money fast enough to buy a BC in a reasonable time. Besides, you can probably do a lot of the level 3 missions with your cruiser. A BC isn't necessarily a requirement for level 3.

Sell as much loot as you can, from lower level missions.
I've forgotten the name of the Skill offhand, but train the Trade skill that lets you place more Sell Orders at once.
Check Market Prices on all modules that you collect... if it's not worth selling, melt it down and stockpile the minerals. Sell when you have a lot of minerals, or manufacture something useful with a decent BPC. (Cheaply available on ESCROW... just make sure you Inspect escrow items before claiming... some sneaky peeps out there).
It shouldn't take long, running L2 missions, to be able to afford your first BattleCruiser and Skillbooks for it. Make sure you'also trained up the skills needed to use it effectively. Trying to fly a Cyclone with Frigate guns attached is not such a good idea. _______

Pick up all the loot on those level 2s. I found that pretty much every lvl 2 I would get at least one item that was worth between 1-300K and about 5% of the time something worth over a mil with the odd 5 mil+ items once in a great while. Refining and selling the minerals from the junk adds up to a suprising amount also. When I started doing lvl 2s I still had no idea what things were worth. I found a nice agent in a trade hub and worked from there for a while to get an idea of which items had value and which went in the reprocess box :)

Trade, Retail, Wholesale, Tycoon.
To the OP, if you're refining mission junk loot then you may want to look into Refining and Refining Efficiency (or find a miner friend with such skills) and try and do it at a station where you have high standing.
I wouldn't bother with Scrapmetal Processing and the requirements are very high.
