I'm only just beginning to assimilate the concepts of the Factional Warfare thang, and I think I've run into a snag of sorts...
If I read it right, your CORP has to sign up and pick a side. Thing is, our corp is made up of peeps who have been grinding rep with different factions. If we corporately (no pun intended) sign on with the Gallente, and start poking at Caldari...that's going to kind of ruin it for those of us who have being trying oh so hard to be tight with the Cal'Navy....right? |

Nope. Corp standings are affected by its members. Members standings are never affected by the corp.
So as long as a player doesnt actually join in FW activities his standings wont go down.
****HOWEVER****
When the corp joins Gal Mil, it automatically makes all members part of Gal Mil. This meana certain stations will deny you docking rights but more importantly: Faction police will hunt them in their space and enemy militia will be able to kill them legally, even if they just want to run missions for Cal Navy. So usually the best way, either you all agree to go into FW or you dont. It is also not uncommon to have 2 sister corps, one for the FW people and the other for the rest and just share a moderated "community channel" for both corps

Thanks for clarifying.
This does mean then that those of us who've been working up Caldari cred cant really flight cooperatively with those who have been working Gallente (or whatever)....unless of course peeps want to give that up and start over/ |

Well they could fleet with a Gal person to assist and share standings.
But it still will mean they will always have to be on their toes for enemies, you are after all in the militia.

I was interested in FW pvp until I found out about the faction hit. That pretty much ruins my sandbox ideas for my character.
Of course I could start a new alt just for FW but I'm still new and don't have the time to branch out to alts yet. |

Of course I could start a new alt just for FW but I'm still new and don't have the time to branch out to alts yet. Take it from me... if you are playing for the long haul your faction standings will suffer unless...
- you completely abstain from missions altogether. The reason for this is that even if you avoid missions against specific empire factions, standings increases with one will be received negatively by that faction's "enemies." For example: running missions for agents attached to the Gallente will slightly decrease you standings with Amarr and Caldari. Do note that you have to run a MASSIVE amount of missions for this to become a real problem.
- you don't shoot any empire NPCs or players in NPC corporations. Shooting players in NPC corporations will lower your standings with that NPC corporation... which slightly affects empire standings. Again... you have to do this habitually for it to become a real problem.
My advice is to just bite the bullet and do what you want. You can always pause your main character's training for a month or two and make an alt character on the same account to buy and haul stuff for you (hint: once that alt can fly a blockade runner very well you never have to train that character again). I did this and it has made my life SO MUCH EASIER for the last few years.
How did you start?

You CAN run missions to increase your standings with an NPC corp and refuse "storyline" missions that affect your empire standings. It's possible to increase your standings with all empires to about 3.0 or so, by doing A LOT of missions for all of them. It's possible to have 10.0 with certain corps in each empire without ruining your overall standings with the other empires.
As far as loss of standings from FW:
- You can patch up the loss with the skill Diplomacy from the Social category. In fact, if you bottom your standings to -10.0, and train Diplomacy to 5 (might take a bit), you should be at -6.0 effective standings. Then you only have to do enough missions for L1 agents to get your standings from -6.0 to -5.0 (-4.99 actually), at which point the navies stop shooting you when you enter their space. It's only a 1.01 difference.
- If you really want stuff from Jita but can't go there, you can always buy with an alt and courier-contract someone for transport to your main. But there are trade hubs in every empire, so you should have access to gear no matter what your FW affiliations are.
- Level 1 agents are always available with missions so you can fix your standings. You just need to find an Amarr station in Gallente space, for example, so you can do missions without entering Amarr space. |

Personally, I enjoy the death threats whenever I enter Cal/Amarr space.
If I had my way, all Minmatar characters would be unable to enter Amarr space and so on. In my opinion it would only add to the immersion and consistency of empires in conflict.
And any impracticalities could be overcome with alts anyway.

I'd add to the previous comment that the likelihood of pushing your real standings to -10 with just FW stuff is rather low unless you're doing it constantly every day for like a year.
So grab Diplomacy V (which is a good idea anyhow if you operate in high sec period) and stop worrying about it; once you leave FW you'll almost immediately be able to float in space by gates again and such. |
