I want to be able to individually paint or texturize parts or the entire surface of my ships!

EVE is supposed to be unsharded- that is, everyone can see every part of it. If people could customise their ships' appearances, that would mean that whenever anyone came in sight of anyone else, the server would have to pass all the texture information etc between them, increasing lag. It would also reduce the performance of peoples' clients.
I'd have thought that if there were sufficient restrictions on what people could choose (e.g. primary and secondary colours in fixed patterns) it ought to have a fairly minimal impact, but for all I know even that could have disastrous effects. If peoples' avatars are anything to go by, I doubt that this would ever work well- I've heard of people going for months with a big ! instead of a portrait...

Hmm, well... my idea is simple: the client contains all predefined textures and texture attributs. The only values downloaded from the EVE servers are the number of the texture, and the individual numeric values for reflection, gloss, etc..
And colors are just big integer numbers, which also could be downloaded. The calculations are done by the graphics card, and despite of various textures, the procedure for each ship is not different. It just uses different values.
Not too sure if that is a too big burden for the servers. basically, all they do is to transfer a few numerical values more for a ship. And the database has a few additional fields.

Doesn't it look like most T2 ships just have black tiger stripes over the standard paintjob, or just shiny armor? Hopefully, those will be changed to more fitting colours and patterns in the big patch that everyone's looking forward to.
I hope CCP hires more drones to make it take less time
Customising ships is an excellent idea, but it is attempting to make it reality that is the difficult part. Maybe in the future. However, I'd gladly have an olive-drab ship than a riced up one.
And I still have a freakin exclamation mark on my face, noooo! At least on the forums, pleeeeez!
