Hello:
Im definitely intrigued about the process.... because as I see it right now is not working.
The launcher settings should have a checkbox somewhere to tell it to ONLY download launcher updates IF you are going to use the saved update from another client/computer, else why gives us the option to save patches?????
Right now, I just updated this client. Launcher settings are set to NOT delete patches after installation, and I can check and they are right there. But, when I come to my next client and double click on launcher, by the time I reach the button to import and saved patch... ITS ALREADY DOWNLOADING IT!!!!!! (caps intended).
And this goes also for my 3rd client... it will automatically start downloading the next update and theres no way to tell it to NOT do it. I already searched the Technical Center and the only mention about this feature is the ability to save patches, and how to import them to other installations, but there's no mention on how to stop the automatic process.
And, yes, some will say that you can 'pull' the plug, disable the adapter and such, but often times, the launcher DOES NEED to update, and by the time the launcher update finishes... its already downloading the incoming update.
So, please, CCP, do something, dont provide 'neat' ideas if you are not going to thoroughly double check that it will work as intended and that the USERS get to understand how it will work.
I hate writing like this, as I love the game, but you dont leave much alternative. |

Sounds to me like you're doing it wrong. Have you tried using junctions?

With Download On Demand, there are two types of data that you have to update with a given patch. One of them is the data in Shared Resources. The way that the Shared Resources folder works is that all data is downloaded only once, ever. All your installations share the same Shared Resources folder, and a second install will never re-download a file that's already there unless it needs a different version of that file, say, because one install is TQ and the other is for Singularity. Shared Resources files are usually very large compared to the size of binaries.
The second type of data are executables such as the launcher and the core EVE client. These files are pretty small. For these files, I'd expect that if the features to save patches and apply them to other installations are in the launcher, they should work in such a way that you can reapply the patch manually. If that's not working as you'd expect, please file a bug report and we'll look into it.
I'll be sure to bring this thread to the attention of the team that is working on Download On Demand in the morning, to see if there's anything we can do to ensure that you're not re-downloading patches to binaries, or at least clarify the design intent.

I've come to find out that I can run both TQ and SiSi next to each other without extra copies of things, as well as junctioned additional clients for the sake of separating settings - I however do NOT use the launcher for my junctioned clients so that might be a reason why I've not seen any issues just yet.

Here's how I do it; 1. Let first client patch itself. 2. Manually copy the patch file to other clients. 3. Start the other clients.
At stage three the other clients will notice the copied patch file and use it instead of downloading anything.
Suggestion to CCP: Since you guys now have created a 'Shared Resources' location use that for the downloaded patch files too.
In other words when one client downloads a patch file save it in 'shared resources\patches' folder and when clients notice that a new patch is required they will first look into that patches folder to see if a correct patch file already exists locally.
Problem solved? Right?

Not sure why they forced this, it should have been an option to switch to the on demand system instead of forcing people to use it. Ever since the patch i have had nothing but lag in game, before the patch everything worked fine. Used to get the same kind of lag when i ran several clients off 1 install, switched to using several different installs on different SSDs and it removed the lag issues i had till the patch messed everything up. |

I agree with the sentiment of your signature. Low sec does indeed 'fixing' as it is in a sort of no man's land. What could be put there or how it could be 'iterated' on I'm not sure though. I think there is scope for something really good as it is almost a blank canvas waiting for paint to be daubed on it.

Following up:
I spoke with the team working on Download On Demand to pass along feedback related to manually applying patches and to lagginess when resources load.
Specifically in relation to stalls on resource loading, they're aware of the issues people have reported and have a couple changes in the works that may help. If you're experiencing that particular issue, I would wait a week or so, and if you don't see much improvement after that point, please submit a bug report.

I've noticed quite big performance drop when playing with two accounts. Biggest drop happens when 2 ships are undocking from the same station but I also nottice a lot of stuttering even when ships are few jumps away. It happens mostly mid warp or when landing on grid.
Trying to reverse to pre patch state I've duplicated shared cache folder so every client has its own. Slight improvement but it's far from the pre patch state
Hoping for a fix ... |

I allways use the launcher and the same eve installation for all my alts with no problems so far. Only for the test server I have a copy of the eve folder. |

I definitely dont like this new system. At first it was because of the cache storing on my C:. I've since switched it to the D:, but this lag and hang ups suck. I never had that before unless I was loading onto a grid with insane amounts of objects. Now I get lag just landing at some random station. |
