I don't think I've ever exhausted one of these. In general, I don't undock with 4000 rounds of faction ammunition except when putting on a laser show. I generally die before expending an entire clip with any weapon system. Do crystals take extra volatility damage when overheated? I don't know.
Personally, I wouldn't mind if both the volatility and drop rate were doubled, and/or the LP cost halved. People are always complaining about laser users never needing to reload anyway.
You could increase the volatility 10x and I'd still be surprised if I ever managed to crack one. 400 rounds per m3 inventory is normal for hybrid and projectile ammo, but I'm sure the laser users appreciate the extra space for cap charges. Honestly, I never quite grasped the point of the ammo volume reductions back in the day. |

If you lose a ship in combat then you end up wasting a chunk of whatever ammo you bring. This goes for any PvP fitted ship where you don't somehow manage to expend all of your ammo before dying.
Just taking a quick glance at the relative costs of various faction ammo types, you're paying around the same (and generally a little less) for your Large Size faction crystals that I pay for 1000 rounds of Large Caldari Navi Antimatter, which is maybe enough for a single roam, plus crap T1 backup ammo. For Medium ammo I'm paying significantly more than you for 1000 rounds. Except you don't have to take T1 backup ammo but we both lose our extras if we blow up.
Overall it's balanced against the other ammo types on cost, and doesn't need a buff like what you're proposing.
Incidentally the place where you'll see players actually wearing out their Faction crystals is in PvE, for the most part. |

If you die constantly before you use up faction crystals, you should rather rethink your way of fighting than trying to change the game to suit your broken way to play. I have managed to break IN Multis and other faction crystals multiple times in my PVP ships. I also do not look forward to having even more replacement crystals in my Laser boats, which inevitably results in messed up set usage, uneven damage levels and gun groups stopping to work when 1 crystal breaks before the others.

Your idea points purely towards PVP, whereas with PVE it would an incredible pain if crystals shattered more often than they already do. |

Just to clarify, it's the equivalent of 4000 rounds per turret, plus additional crystals. So, for a coercer, it'd be like loading up 32,000 rounds of ammunition for each range you want to include.
I can see why people move into T2 guns as fast as possible. It saves a lot of isk to use T2 crystals. |
