So, I am a player new to EVE and really enjoying it. I have this question:
I've been lurking in lowsec doing missions, ratting, staying alive, and otherwise running around trying to get by. In the in-game spacestations/starbases (sorry, not so sure about the terminology) in lowsec areas, the one's protected by 2 sentry guns, is it possible to amass a large enough armada, warp in, take out the sentry guns, and then blow up the station?
What prevents users from doing this if it can be done? Maybe too much potential damage to ships for no return?
I'm just curious. I mean, I have nowhere near anything like the ability, skills, or group to do something like this. Just a hypothetical though excercise. Thanks!

Stations can't be destroyed, wether they are NPC or player built. Would make for a nice explosion tho :)

I am very sure that player stations can be destroyed. I have watched hundreds of videos of this happening. Not sure about npc though it should be possible.

They can be conquered, not destroyed afaik. a POS can be destroyed, not stations.

POS = Player Owned Structure
There are lots of objects in the POS category - Control towers (Starbases), corporate hangar arrays, shield hardeneres and outpost construction platforms.
Generally though, when someone says POS he means starbase, the one with the big shields where the owner can set up moon miners, sentries and various hangars and refining modules. A starbase is disabled when its control tower is destroyed (Usually involving some dreadnoughts)
Outposts are player built stations, and when they lose their shields transfer ownership to the agressor

Edited by: Berand on 26/10/2006 19:52:09 POS generally refers to a structure erected by a corporation at a moon in a system. It's a control tower with various modules and a big shield around it that keeps bad guys out. These can be destroyed through a lengthy process involving knocking them in to reinforced mode by getting through their shields with a Dreadnought fleet, whereupon they become invincible until they run out of fuel, usually a day or so. After they come out of reinforced mode they can be destroyed completely, or they can be refuled once their shields are healed back to a certain level. The alliance with the highest number of POSes in a 0.0 system has sovreignty over that system, as listed in the upper-left of your screen when in space.
An Outpost is a station in 0.0 space that has been built by a corporation. They control who can dock and all the fees and everything involved. They can be taken over, but not destroyed. You must have sovreignty in the system to have one.
The big NPC stations in Empire can't be blown up or taken over.

Correct - a POS, you can destroy with a large enough fleet, a station can be shot at until it hits armor and switches to your side. NPC stations are invulnerable.

NPC stations can be blown up, if they are not places where you can dock tho.
they must be large colliderable structures, like the one in the bonus stage of guristas extravaganza.

Techinically correct but as you stated they are large collidable objects not stations where players can dock which is what the op was referring to so therefore the point is moot -----------------------
