Edited by: UndergrounD on 27/10/2006 17:29:05 Anyone here have technical knowledge of CRT monitors?
I have a 3 year old IIyama MA201D 22 inch CRT touchscreen monitor thats been making an annoying high pitched noise for some time.
The noise appears at seemingly random times, however its more frequent if I display black or very dark images onscreen.
The noise is often accompanied by faint lines running down the screen.
I can cure the noise and lines sometimes by switching the monitor off and on very quickly.
I'm trying to find out whether its worth getting the monitor repaired, or is it on its last legs?
Would be a shame to lose it as I use the touchscreen a fair bit for gaming.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

I had a Gateway 17" monitor I had for 4 or 5 yrs and it started douing the same thing yours is doing, the only way i could get mine to stop was to hit the top of the monitor I finally got rid of it and bought 2 flat screen monitors.
I sure hope my oldest son is enjoying that noisey thing

Try a lower frequency, and if that doesn't help then get a new one.

The high pitched noise is normally for older CRT's especially when they first turn on to adjust to the frequency. But if your getting lines and crap everywhere, I'd say last legs.

Edited by: Core Bash on 27/10/2006 18:41:20 I had the same problem, and like one of the posters here, the only way I could fix the noise was to beat the CRT with an ungodly force. Strike the top-front of the case in a downward motion with extreme conviction and see if that helps.
Edit: Aha - Gleaker, mine was a 5 year old 17" Gateway CRT, too! Gateway victims unite! _

When a CRT does that, the only fix is to get a big sledgehammer and smash it.
Then go buy a new flatpanel

I'll put some headphones on until it dies or I get enough cash for a decent size screen.
cheers for the replies.

What you're hearing may be free electrons on the screen itself; this may also account for screwy video. Try degaussing it if it comes with a degauss option (most monitors degauss when turned on, which is why restarting has helped). -Wrayeth

sounds familer to what TVs do as they age, the wassname, flyback transformer gets eccentric, you get the noise, it eventually dies. sometimes brute force helps, kinda. but its your monitors way of telling you to start considering funeral arrangments.

First you must find a large buliding.
Locate the roof of the large buliding.
Find the nearest power socket which is assoicated with your monitor and use an extension to bring power to the roof.
Plug your monitor in turn on then push monitor off roof towards ground making sure no one is nearby.
Stand a large distance away from cable.
Watch result, buy new monitor. --------------

Edited by: Sphit Ker on 28/10/2006 00:41:36 Hey dont forget to film it!! youtube that!
I am o my 5th CRT right now. Mine does whiiiiine a lot over a white page and nothing when dark. Totally silent computer FTW.
Last one (a 17' KDS) died very nicely. First, colors would go off and back randomly for a week or so. Usually the blue signal dying leaving an horrible yellow-green-ish vomit tint. It started to 'buzz', literally doing "BZZZZT! BZzz BzzzzZZZT!!" *Plok..KaPlok..KaPlokKaPlok..BzzzzZZZZZT" with fancy rainbow scan lines trying to miming a video test run.. then the smoke. Horrible smell. I pulled the plug rather quick and then bought the last CRT available at my local Future Shop.
Im sure yours is dying, too, but it may still last a bit. Start saving ;)

Why is it that hitting the top of CRT's solves all their problems? It worked for my old monitor, whats the science behind it?

maybe related to this
(stolen from google answers referring to TV's, but the prnciples apply)
Glass picture tube tv's gain their high voltage from a flyback transformer that operates at the horizontal retrace frequency of 15 Kilohertz. (that's 15000 pulses per second) Just at the edge of hearing. If your tv or monitor squeals, it's because the windings of the flyback have loosened. It won't cause any problems, and fixing it would be expensive (replacement of flyback transformer). It's just one of those things you have to live with. -----------------------------------------------

If you open that bugger up do be carefull. The flyback suplies about 1kV per inch and even turned off the tube can retain it's charge for quite some time.
I say you make a Jacobs ladder out of it. :D

I prob wont open it up unless a quick vacuum will help.
Tho I'm not too sure what the isolating properties of a commercial vacuum are =P
Would be marvelous if this problem was just dust ingress. -----------------------------------------------

Static electricity charges, mmm... Guaranteed to break transistors.
Someone asked why smashing CRT:s with a hammer usually "fixes" them? Usually it's because there's some soldered parts coming parts getting and hitting the thing pushes them back to contact. Had a 12" inverse CGA CRT long ago which got a very nice beating, the chassis was starting to break apart from quite a few places, but the beatings always worked

Has anyone considered the possibility that the high-pitched sound it emits could be an explosive device about to detonate, or possibly an electron death-ray? I understand death-rays make a high-pitched sound just before they blast things into atoms. -------------

I would not recommend leaving this monitor on if you are not in the room and/or house. If you do, you may come back to find a big red truck parked outside, and guys in helmets and big coats running around in your house.

Why does leaving your monitor on when your out mean that the chippendales turn up to your house? |

Very funny. Assuming firemen not chippendales; because this monitor is dying, and might catch fire at any time. Especially if the OP is not there to switch it off when it starts smoking. ---------------------------------------------- "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent." ---------------------------------------------- |
