Recognized EvE first time in the comparison threads of E:D and SC forums 2 years ago. But I was not frequenting forums of other games before that, and I don't remember any catching ad in Steam or elsewhere.

I have run it a lot of Ubuntu 14 and it could be ported into the Ubuntu Software Centre, which would be constant advertising for EVE and reinforce Linux as a gaming operating system.

Only reason he did it was for the automatic updates so he doesnt have to wait for the game to update when he goes to log in.
Only benifate I can think of.
Sorry to break it to your friend but steam updates the eve client once in a blue moon. He'll still have to update the client through the launcher. |

I would say CCP does a horrible, terrible job at advertising, but I am not sure they are even trying. Seems like they are completely content on wasting money on web banner ads on long time players.
It is really a shame, the IP and Story is so strong and the recent videos are some of the most epic anywhere in gaming. it would be hard to mess up a campaign.
EVE could really use it.

Years ago a co-worker of mine offered to let me try EvE out by logging into his character. I did so and then I got blown up nearly immediately after undocking. My co-worker had multiple accounts and really wanted to pod himself. He got me to pilot his capsule and he blew himself up.
He then told me to get into a ship in the hangar. I picked the Raven Navy Issue, because, name. Undocked. He told me to target him and press F1 through F6. I did so.
I was hooked immediately. |

REALLY? I'd have liked to see which ad they used for that. I first came onboard with Trinity, I think. The video ad for that was quite amazing. |

I discovered Eve via word of mouth as well, from a former WoW guildmate. Only after I started playing Eve did I start seeing random ads for it here and there. Google is clearly working for the NSA. |

Unsuccessful At Everything wrote:I found Eve long ago when I was googling for a catalytic converter for a 1983 Camaro, and one of the hits was for the Catalyst (yay google!) At first I was all like "ooooooohhhhh spaceships!".. but then I was all like "..oh.. subscriptions.." then later I was all like "OH! Free trial!" and then I was all like "How do I uh the do stuff? Where is the butan? How do I the .. wow red cross.. sweet Ill shoot OMG OMG OMG IM DYING OMG OMG SCREECH SCHREEEECH HULL ALARM BOOOOM Whats this egg thing?" then I paid the things and got the stuff and found friends and learned to play and did the things with the stuff. True story.
For me it was more like : mine to build a battleship , mine more to build a battleship , mine even more to build a battleship , finally after months building the battleship and once it was done i sat in it for 3 whole jumps. The third jump was right into EC-P8R wich also was my first encounter with null-sec and the term '''gatecamp'' ..... At least i enjoyed it a little longer then you would these days as i didin't have a bookmark for the gate so had to do the extra 15km .
On topic though , nope never seen an add for eve anywhere outside of the eve related sites i visit.

Some yes, some no. At the end of the day, they either quit due to over-complicate system (by their standard), or due to "the game is not fun enough". I tried to tell them that after awhile the game can grant the sense of satisfaction and fun like no other game could offer, yet they just look at me and said "after a day of work/school/etc, why the hell would I want to spend my precious free time effort to grind in some binary numbers, when I can easily get some instantaneously satisfaction elsewhere by playing some Moba or other MMOs?"
The point is, for EVE, the strength of advertisement does not matter as much, because the steep learning curve and stock-like fun curve of EVE would filter most of nowadays' players out regardless.

I think the advertising would have to be wide, in order to catch as much initial interest as possible. The game keep those that it will, and others will lapse off, having tried the trial and not found their interest here, but at least they will have experienced it. But if they never hear of it, then instead of a percentage not liking it and not staying, none of them will stay because they didn't know to come here.
And I think the new 'opportunities' new player experiences will help keep more folks. |

Also, there's more competition out there, Star Citizen, Elite: Dangerous, so getting out from among the crowd is important too. One of the things that EVE has as an advertisable advantage is that the expansions are part of the subscription, instead of being an extra charge. EVE doesn't charge for every new feature, while the competition is doing that.
Not being pumped for extra money on top of the subscription is an appealing thing. Some of these game CEOs' minds are still in the Nexus of $1000 jeans, while CCP and EVE's touch on that is in the distant past, circa YC 'long ago'. |
