K long story .. if you want TLDR.. well your in the wrong post.
K that got rid of the riff raff ..
My intent in writing this is for my own catharsis. And exploration of my current feelings 13 years in (and out).
Lets begin in the beginning.
I was playing web based multiplayer strategy games back in 2001 and 2002, through them i heard through the grape vine about this new game in development called EvE - which was modeled in some small way on Elite which was one of my favorite early video games. In the fall of 2002 I spent a few weeks reading up on it and joining IRC channels dedicated to talking about the "what ifs". Luckily for me i was in a Dev chat in IRC where everyone there got invited to the beta.
Soon thereafter i downloaded, installed and ran the game. I undocked and flew straight for 5 mins trying to figure out the interface. Good times.. We tested mining and CTD'ed. We got chased back to station by rats. Our ships turned into asteroids in warp .. we CTD'ed after every second jump. And we loved it and came back for more.
Eventually i joined a player corp called Endless. But it self destructed over christmas due to human hubris and underhanded something or other. From the ashes rose PRI - Phoenix Rising Inc. Which meandered up until release .. i think 2 or 3 of us out of 20-30 mbrs actually subbed .. which was too bad .. was a great group.
Anyhow - i for no good reason ended up being CEO of a 2-3 person corp at release and slowly got a few new members are people coalesced in the first days and weeks. We were never great or rich or powerful .. but we had fun and worked together, shared assets and resources.. mined for the greater good and tried to find out way in this amazing new game.
We did mining, refining, manufacturing, research, rat hunting, traded stuff, hauled things .. tried not to get killed by M00 in Mara. the usual.
Eventually we merged with another corp to form Ascendancy Inc or ASCII - i was still CEO even though many of our players were more skilled, smarter and generally better at the game in myriad of ways. Still not sure how that happened - i can only surmise i was good at the macro and harnessed their skill in the micro. But thats another matter. We moved down south into Khanid and started venturing in 0.0 .. for some reason M00 ended up down there too harassing pilots as they moved through the choke(s). Eventually we grouped with other corps into the Coalition of Free Stars alliance, or CFS.
This was before alliances were in game, before sov, before POS etc.. CFS was an attempt at a sorta democratic co-op where no one ruled but we all benefited from mutual support .. worked for a while .. then the leadership changed - powers in the hands of a great leader fell to a mere mortal for whom the "power corrupts" axiom was aptly personified. Soon after that Fountain Alliance took things over and it was all moot anyhow.
We learned about the fragility of such organisations .. and also that our fun in game was going to be drawn from our own little group .. but that due to the game we would have to play within the bigger game. I played for a while more as we moved into Stain .. we worked with outposts when they came in, started to get better with 0.0 to high sec logistics etc.. I stayed all the way up until POS came into the game.. Something around then just sorta left me wanting more .. so i left for the first time.
Cant recall how many times over the years i have come and gone .. alot. I first went to go play WWIIonline was there for a few years, still subscribe .. like i have almost always subscribed to Eve. I ended coming back to EvE with WWIIonline people .. we formed 23rd Armored and did stuff. I left and came back and left and came back. I think we were in Hydra in the north for a bit. Each time i would come back i would pick up new skills, new ships .. my attention would be held for a bit and then some AAA game title would come out and i would wander off again.
I have kept a small group of friends in game, and over the years join them wherever they are that .. fitting my play style, in as much as i have one. Over the years i have done pretty much everything in game .. almost. Jack of all trades master of none. I have always sucked at making isk.. consistency eh?
On a few of my returns i joined Eve Uni on 3 occasions.. I had a great time in each adventure with them. Loved helping out and learning .. truly a great institution, one of many in Eve which only help to make the game greater. I will get into my last adventure with them later. During my 2nd time in the Uni it was wardec city. Pretty much 24/7 with 1-2 day interludes. I didnt mind it .. but it led me to hate the mechanic. I dont see place for it in game .. i dont think Concord or the NPC empires would allow, it is too much of a tool for gankers and other twits. On the other hand its a great tool for RvB .. so i isnt all bad .. perhaps it should always be a mutual thing.
Before you think that i am some sort of weird anti ganker high sec carebear .. far from it .. i have long since come to understand the importance of getting your ass kicked. I loved fearing M00 back in the day .. made the game so much fun. The fear of loss, to say nothing of the loss make the game exciting, make risk v reward possible. But i think they should be more activities for null, low sec and less for theives and highwaymen out in the open. Not sure what the system should be .. but not what it is now with war decs .. but i digress.

I came back 2 years ago and joined up with a industrial corp in as some sort of renter. I really enjoyed being in null, but not overly worried about CTA and such. When i started in Eve i was in a post secondary college doing IT stuff, then unemployed .. so i had time a plenty. Now i am a professional, a husband, a home owner, and a father of 2. Free time is no longer in great supply and I dont have time in game to spend 1 hour forming up, 2 hours moving and fighting and hour getting home .. I have 1-2 hrs .. and i might have to get up from the computer to change a diaper, flip the laundry, feed the cats, and god knows what else.
I left them when a work colleague going through some stuff pulled me into a couple of AAA MMO titles.. But eventually running about in fantasy land, doing quest after quest after quest in some strange headlong flight to get to end game content .. just made me get back to eve where the end content is what you start doing on day one - if you so desire.
This time i knew i wanted to do some bucket list stuff. So i joined RvB. Pvp all the time, some teaching with the newbros who seems to join all the time (i wouldnt have thought i could when i started if such a thing had existed), and alot of learning .. i knew a little about pvp .. but i feel in a much better position now. Also got my skills up and finaly hit 100m SP. I know i should be at 200m or something silly after being a day one player .. but i didnt use implants.. cross trained .. and went afk for years. so it is what is ..
Eventually, last fall i got the hankering to try out 2 of my bucket list things .. Incursions and WH. I did incursions with the uni group .. but found i was spending more time chasing after incursions and not enough time actually doing them. The uni community was too small sadly .. but i much preferred running with them .. they were more helpful, better and instructions and not all crazed like most of the communities .. who all seemed like they were coke addicts .. I jest but the level of intensity was a little heightened and didnt make it conducive to having a fun hour .. people just took it too seriously.
I then go myself back into the Uni so i could learn about WH out at their campus. Was really cool .. but then my 2nd daughter was born and i had less and less time .. and no way to make sure i could stay in space with all the afore mentioned draws on my time. So i wandered off again ..
Over the years i have played so many other games .. but only Eve keeps drawing me back in. Even though im not good at it.. even though i cant make up my mind what i want to do in it, even though as the years go by i have less and less friends, even though the game changes so much that i really cant call myself a vet anymore .. and i know less about current mechanics than someone who has been only playing for a few months.
I still maintain it is the best MMO built to date .. and a lot of that comes from the players and the tools that we have been provided .. It amazes me how absolutely weak other MMO's com / chat systems are... why would you ever restrict the amount of channels people can create and run inside a multiplayer game. Boggles the mind and such a easy thing to implement with such a huge boon to the whole player interaction part of the game. I think it somewhat interesting that my Eve experience started on IRC - and the chat Eve has is much the same, allowing whatever level of fidelity the players want to push at it.
Anyhow after that exceedingly long preamble i come to crux of why I am writing this all out, which is really for myself more than anything. My friend has been babbling on about Star Citizen for a few weeks ..and it got me to thinking about the whole interest in a new game coming out, and how will it fit within the MMO world. The more i look at SC the more i ended up thinking about Eve. I started watching videos from the fanfests starting with the keynote from 2013 - love Hilmar's story of the early gameplay. Was so much fun starting off .. no one had BS .. they hadnt been built yet, and or no one had amassed the isk yet.
SC will probably be that sort of fun, new undiscovered country .. but its gona be so far behind Eve which has had 13 years (besides the years of development) to sort itself out. Anyhow .. yesterday and today i was watching 2015 fanfest stuff .. and sorta like being homesick .. i feel the very strong urge that I have to come back to Eve- again. But what am i gona do this time? With all the experiences what have i learned about Eve and myself?
I dont think i will remain in WH space.. Its too PvE, with some PvP but its 20v1 or 1v20 sorta pvp i dont really care for. I dont really want to make isk, i just go to work make $$ and then buy plex so i can enjoy the game. I love to work in game for common goals .. i would mine all day for the corp cause .. or to help a bud .,. but after and hour for myself im done. WH space is loads of fun, never know what the next WH down the chain is gona bring .. but it is lacking something ..
PvP in RvB was great, loads and loads of unadulterated fun , fights all the time, chit chat on the voice coms, theorycrafting .. but the fights felt hollow, I wasnGÇÖt protecting space, taking space, interdicting the enemy, protecting allies .. it was just like playing a FPS and not like playing WWIIonline or even Planetside GÇô I want my pvp to mean something .. to have a reason behind. Even though it was good fun I crave more. I think Im done with highsec for a while as well. On one side its too much like the MMOs I donGÇÖt like the play .. almost everything is solo playable .. aside from incursions and I donGÇÖt think I fit in there . and I donGÇÖt need the money .. soGǪ

So I guess I can answer my own question, I think its time to go back to null and deal with the issues out there .. logistics and drama.. ah well .. at least the pvp will have meaning .. and if I get with the right corp I can work for the corp goals with a smile on my face. And hopefully I wont have to CTA with my 1hr a night .. can see how that would work .. but I can run defence.. Make sense ?
Wonder whats changed since I was out there 1.5 years ago. Wonder what that jump fatigue is like, wonder how sov changes will affect me, wonder if I can remember where I left my Thany. Anything else I need to know before I try and find a new home?
Anyhow, thanks for listening.

As a 2004 player myself i can relate to some of the stuff you mention.Have you ever tried FW?I ask this because i myself only got into FW a year ago for the first time and it was just the thing that seemed missing for me since 2007ish.I am talking about small fights , a lot of it being 1vs1.
Not too much drama , ideall for casual players as you can easily find fights and as it is low-sec you can easily dock up close by if needed.Or do it as i did and be a pirate in FW space so you can dock anywhere at any time and the secloss means nothing since you can buy tags for those at a low price.

This made me smile :)
Nice read and welcome back.
As for the changes, I'd suggest Googling and reading patch notes. The word you're looking for is "Phoebe". That's the name of the patch that neutered capitals and their jumpdrives. Read it well, because it's a pretty standard CCP mechanic; once you get it, it makes perfect sense and you'll have no problem using it. But before that moment of dawning its more like: Wtf is this sh**?

Enlighten me why as the OP only talks about his experiences in eve he had and isn't asking for help or a question and i've seen numerous of these get moved to a subforum or just locked?Don't get me wrong i don't care if it get's moved or not and found it a nice read but i never understand the logic in the moderation here.
Well the only logic i can put on it , if it is positive about eve then leave it in GD , if it isn't positive either lock it or move it to the corners of the forum allmost no one reads.

thanks for the reply
I forgot to mention FW is on my bucket list .. but i think i will leave that for the next time i get fed up with nullsec. I think you are right in that it would most definitely work well with my current life status, would allow for pve + pvp + co-op work .. but i think it would be more sorta like RvB - in that the combat although a heck of a lot of fun, and the people making it a great experience that the end goal, the main point is to fight for fun or as part as some npc based game mechanic .. and the taking and holding of player owned space.
As a long time military history buff (have the degree - check), and general student of strategic studies, international conflict, political science, and the like .. i am really drawn to the aspects of eve that encompass those avenues of thinking. Perhaps i should read more on FW .. but i think i need to re-immerse myself in the big crazy world of nullsec alliance warfare again.
Although i could search for myself - someone might have just the right link for "what is FW" video or blog or wiki or text write up that in depth encapsulates the whole thing. I do trust my googling .. but you never know if you might miss some great nugget of wisdom.

I did it while in a calmil group and later as a pirate.I found out the pirate style suited me more as i like to have my fights 1vs1 .An additional bonus to this is that you don't have any affiliation with anyone and as such can attack whoever you want wich opens up to having a lot more fights in a short timespan wich for the casual player is ideall. The downside is on that same line though as you don't have any backup either and offcourse your cash income should be generated in another way , a trading alt or mission alt for example. You could join a pirate corp in the FW area to remove that downside but i've often found being on your own to be much more adventurous.
It's a bit like RvB yes , though my experience in RvB has only been one week .It lacked the reall idea of fighting an opponent for me since it's an arranged war so the whole idea is to just fight each other all day.FW is more fullfilling for me in that regard.

I hear ya. Early 2004 player here myself, with similar long intermissions between playing. You seem to have the benefit of still having your group of people to play with, our group just sort of drifted apart, and I have no idea where most of them are these days :( All in all your post resonated strongly with me. Started out as a young guy with plenty of time myself, and find myself with less and less time to actually play anymore, even though I, like you, think this is one of the best, if not the best, MMO made so far. It just ticks (ticked) all my boxes.
Perhaps all of us 'disenfranchised' oldies should just start a corp or something and see if we can rekindle the fun and camaraderie I miss these days, and tell stories to the youngins about the good old days... |

That's the thing with nostalgia though , we remember the good old days when everything was new and we forget all the stuff in that time that wasn't good .It is why i loved FW though , after a verry VERRY long time i actually had that feeling of the good old days again when i tried FW last year.Probably to do with flying small stuff and mostly on my own or with a verry small group wich is exactly how it was everywhere in the old days. The battle of B-R5RB vs a frig dual for me a frig dual will win it by FAR , i just like testing my personal skills or the lack of it versus my ability to press F1 on the broadcasted target.

Much is said about Eve being "WoW-ized" in the name of carebearship but perhaps CCP is realizing that they recognize a player base that has stuck around for nearly a decade or more and the single college student who started out a decade ago is now a parent with a mortgage and a career.
That's just the way things are. That a game can retain such players as it stands now is remarkable by itself.

And yes, our lives change and so does the game. Those who try to cling to the past in either case wind up sad (ever meet a middle aged 'bro'?) You don't, you are looking at new things to do, new challenges and the game shifts beneath your feet or behind your back and suddenly the old ways are gone and new horizons appear.
This is why OP has a long story is because Eve is made for that.

Not hanging on to the dual mwd's, the BM market we had because of warp to ZERO, not the huge pile of crap called SOV that CCP is trying to undue, not the two sets of learning skills we had to learn or the nerfing the hell out of speed..no it is not the changes made.
It is moving from the core of the game...a harsh, cold universe. Where loss really hurts, and achievements in this game is note worthy.
And albeit good intentions, I feel some loses sight of the basic core of the game. |
