This is a question regarding the cross-over from scamming to breaking the rule on impersonation.
Ok,
Now impersonation is making yourself out to be someone else, however the old scam "give me x, and ill return x * 3" has been going ... well since the start :)
But this got me to thinking that over the last 12 months the increase of the bots that say something like "Quazal Atreides sent 100m return 500m" etc...
Curious how this is not using my name to fool others, Should this not fall under the impersonation or false representation of another player.
I have no problems (and in my early days may have even) scammed a small bit, but when the bots are filing local with tripe like that it got me wondering about how impersonation / false representation lines up
Now there are lies, lies and damn lies, but when someone is using my name to help them scam a player from cash that must surely be close if not cross the line?
and nope before the trolls i have not been scammed etc, and am merely wondering what the line is between the scam and eula "falsely present yourself to be a representative of another player"
is taken from eula are these scammers not saying that i am part of their scheme? For instance should a scammer use the veldmasters "chribba" name for example a new player might see it and think , oh chribba has done it so it must be cosha?

From how I've interpreted it, that would not be impersonation no. Or it wouldn't be more impersonation than for example you saying "Chribba sent me a mail", be that true or not. Any statement about someone else could be impersonation.
The same thing goes for anyone posting in my thread if this where the case, someone posting in my 3rd party thread saying something like "Chribba helped me trade a titan" would in that case be impersonation, seeing as only I know if said pilot actually is telling the truth or not.
The scammer (imo) is not really presenting him/herself as a representative of the random player they link in local, merely claiming X did something.
While I would enjoy seeing something happen to the scammer, purely because their spam is annoying, I do find it hard to see how it would fall under the EULA when me saying "ISD Ezwal just undocked" is about as much false representation, unless ofc CCP is going to do a crack at actually banning scamming.
Less spam would be really nice however!

I have removed some rule breaking posts and those quoting them.
The Rules: 5. Trolling is prohibited.
Trolling is a defined as a post that is deliberately designed for the purpose of angering and insulting other players in an attempt to incite retaliation or an emotional response. Posts of this nature are disruptive, often abusive and do not contribute to the sense of community that CCP promote.

Judging by the fact that the sentences they spam are long, and are repeated exactly (other than the name of the supposed winner) from a pool of several choices, it's quite apparent that they are using chat macros to generate the spam. CCP isn't doing anything to curb the spam even though they're botting to generate it, so I doubt they'll do anything if you petition "impersonation." Worth a try, but don't hold your breath.
It's amusing how the scammers try to pretend that if you follow their rules for the ISK doubling you'll get your money, when in fact the rules don't matter and they'll just keep any large (or small) sums. Also, why anyone would send 1 billion and 1 cent on purpose baffles me. |

CCP has periodically cleared them out of at least the main trade hubs. Even between purges its much quieter than it use to be.
Really the best way to get rid of them is the same as with spam. Filters.
What won't happen is people getting smart enough to not fall for scams. I mean i just check my spam folder, in the last week i am still getting Nigerian money scams for 20 years now. And we hear about suckers falling for it every time.

I believe the major hubs are where their should be some involvement. The post starter has made a valid point, you can not block people spamming for isk (does that not mean you can report them for being isk spammers?) because if you do, you can not recognise someone just pulled your name to con some gullible new player. Should this not count as some sort of risk to CCP as well. If someone has been abused and they just think CCP just allow this type of behaviour because it's that type of game then what is keeping them around? Surely this caused a loss in profits.
I believe counter measures should be used, do not let CCP look like a bunch of trolls who are happy to see your positive mood obliterated.

It shouldn't be too hard to implement a server side program which keeps track of the chat log in the main trade hubs where the spam occurs. If someone repeats the same message over a given period of time x times it is considered as spam and the person who did this is banned for 1 day in the first case, then 1 week for the second one and then forever.
It would be a nice ban hammer to all of these guys which run bots to announce 1) double isk (check my BIO, totally legit) 2) advertise a fully fit Orca for 699 mio 3) broadcast market errors ("If I would have the isk, please share with me...") and so on.
Currently you have to close local in case you travel through any major trade hub. Otherwise you become mad at some point because no one is really talking any longer or you can't follow any discussion because of those bots. And yes, they must be bots, no one keeps typing in the same message over and over again for hours, days, weeks.
Just make the whole banning automatic without waiting for feedback from players and sooner than later the spammers will give up. |

Scammer2: Congrats Scammer1, you sent 1 bil isk and got 2x back!

to be honest this. Assume everything in the main hubs especially Jita is a scam (it usually is) oh and block everyone who is scamming
The only reason scamming happens is because you let it happen to you. although as long as i have bene playing i think its the worse part of the game. Why because newbies are easily scammed and once that happens they leave, we need more new blood in eve but until CCP seriously does something about it then all the effort they are making to keep new players is all for nothing. The game can survive without the scamming aspect, personally i think its better off without it. |

Yet it is spam, no matter if a bot repeats the message or a lazy guy. If you perform the above copy&paste method to spam the local channel you should be punished like a bot.
Hit the trigger (x identical or similar messages within a given time) -> 24h warning ban, then 2 weeks, then permanent. |
