I am a returning player, absent for 3 years, and IGÇÖm a little lost.
So I started playing back in 2012, and would say I played for maybe 2-3 months before quitting. IGÇÖve dumped months and years into other games, particularly Heroes of Newerth and Aion Online, but for some odd reason, IGÇÖd still think back to Eve, the game I hardly played, and realize how wild of a game it was truly was if you gave it a chance. I remember reading about a player who lost something like $1500 in a single moment when his frigate loaded with a bunch of PLEX got blown to **** town nowhere. I didnGÇÖt give Eve Online much of a chance when I first started playing, and am now giving it another shot, knowing that thereGÇÖs gotta be some neat stuff out in outerspace IGÇÖm missing out on.
So I logged in to see IGÇÖm piloting a Retriever with a couple hundred mil in the wallet. I do remember being a mission runner shooting up rats in a cruiser before becoming a miner. At first I didnGÇÖt understand why the hell I was staring at lasers hitting space rocks while I clicked F1 and F2 every 10 minutes and my drones auto-****** a frigate rat every 15 minutes. And then I realized IGÇÖm super thankful for all those days of miner skill training. Why? Cuz IGÇÖm in college now and college kids got little time between wiping ass with my English paper and blowing **** up in Chem lab. MiningGÇÖs alright in my book.IGÇÖve gotta say, coming home, dropping my backpack, lighting up some fresh green, and chilling out to the amazing Eve soundtrack and light show of my lasers before getting back onto the school grind is particularly relaxing. Even better, I can use one hand to wipe, and the other to mine asteroids, itGÇÖs that easy! So for the past couple of days IGÇÖve been lining my hangar with Veldspar while I school irl and get schooled online in the ways of Eve, through Eve University, Reddit, and other wikis.
But hereGÇÖs where IGÇÖm looking for your help, where can I move on from here? My skills are currently training to get me flying Macks and Hulks, as I want to be able to max out my mining income, as that style of isk making seems to fit my lifestyle the best. IGÇÖm currently sitting at a measly 10m/hr, but for the little work I put in, I think thatGÇÖs alright. IGÇÖll just now assume I have zero experience with PvP, and that I really only have time to dedicate to PvP on the weekends. So this is the goal IGÇÖm headed toward as of now:
Find a corp with awesome mining operations that accommodates filthy casuals like myself. IGÇÖve been reading about nullsec vs. lowsec, and the idea of being part of a mining op or even being a mining boss out in dangerous territory with an Orca or Rorq just sounds badass. IGÇÖm sure this will help increase my isk/hr, and make things even more interesting as IGÇÖll be building friendships among the roid belts.
During periods of free time, aka weekends, IGÇÖll have more opportunity to PvP, and all the isk I rake in during the week can fund that. IGÇÖve been reading bits and pieces about different styles of PvP, from the solo pirate in lowsec, to blobs in high-sec wardecs, to frigate fuckfests in FW, to dealing with hella bubbles in nullsec. IGÇÖve got no idea where to even start, and what kind of PvP will best accommodate my limited lifestyle.
TL;DR logged back in after 3 years. Flying a Retriever. Want to explore my options as I try to delve into PvP. Thanks for all the help you might be able to give me guys! |

Your mining profits will depend on:
- the quality of the asteroids (high-sec vs. null). Read up on the recent dev blog about the ore changes they're making.
- your refining skills. There's an older dev blog detailing the changes, but CCP has cut refining in half; most high-sec stations start with less than half output and if you train all the refining skills you can only get a slight increase to that.
- your trading skills. You need to sell your minerals, so having trade skills that reduce transaction fees and taxes helps quite a bit. It also helps if you have high standings with the trade station, but grinding missions may not be something you're interested in.
Keep in mind that there are dedicated mining barge gank groups out there, CODE alliance and others. They will suicide-attack your ships. I recommend using the tanked mining barge, rather than the max profit mining barge.
As far as taking an Orca or (heh) Rorqual to 0.0 and feeling like a badass mining director, um, ok. Even in deeply protected space, null has roaming gangs of PVP'ers looking for fights, so your Orca / Rorqual will be lost in short order. Also, even with the recent changes to ore, it's likely that it's still more profitable to belt-rat or do anomalies in null.
Joining a high-sec corporation focused on mining can be hit or miss (mostly miss). The problem is, they don't offer anything that you couldn't do solo, really, so why give part of your ore? My experiences have not been all that great with mining corps.

It sounds to me like you are more of the PvP type. Mining is probably the worst isk in game but as you have already noticed you can do it while watching TV or doing homework. I know people that work from home and mine while they are on the clock.
Null sec fleet mining can be more fun more engaging and more isk but it requires a lot more of your attention and still the isk is not all that great. You can make decent isk doing PvE and those skills cross over to PvP so you might want to think about backing off on the mining focus with your skill training and do more combat skills for now.
Beyond that fleet PvP is a good way for people who are unmotivated and looking for guidance to get into PvP. There are plenty of new player friendly null sec corps out there. Some of them are focused on new players and some just somewhat friendly and helpful but more personal. The important thing is to get into a corp that has fleet ops and vets that you can talk to as you go. |

First watch this to motivate you.
Second, get into PVP immediately if it interests you. Training mining skills will have zero impact on your success in combat so you will be starting from square one either way. There's only one way to learn combat in this game - doing it. RvB might be a good option for you to try out some cheap frigate pvp. It's probably the easiest place in the game to find a fight so you can do plenty of casual pvp even in a crammed schedule. And when you've got some more time there's plenty of fleets to fly with as well, no strings attached.
Third, keep in mind that the only guy in the trailer above to publicly moan about boredom and delete his character was the one mining in the video. Just one example of a much larger trend. EVE has way more to offer than shooting rocks and watching netflix. It just takes a bit of effort to find it.

PM sent. We're in a similar boat man, convo me in game and we'll find stuff for you to do.
I totally get it if you dig mining, but there's just so much to do in this game, even if you're playing casually as I do. Yes, casual PVP is a THING, you just need someone to show you how.
So, do some research, see what else is available for you and branch out. EVE is different in that most of the content is made by yourself and other players. New Eden can be your oyster, but really, only YOU can decide what areas of the game interest you.

If watching that motivated you, watch this. Dessy's and Frigs offer cheap fun PvP options, might be worth you while skilling another toon after you get your mining skills at a level your happy with, the last thing you want is to mine with a PvP/FW toon and have target come gank your hulk.

As far as getting into PvP, a good thing to try that wasn't around three years ago might be Faction Warfare.
Albeit, sticking your mining ship with a miner Jump Clone on the opposite side of Empire space from the FW area so you don't run into all the people on the other side might be advisable there. Or join the player version "Red vs Blue" which has somewhat-strict rules about picking on people outside their defined zone, enforced internally.

Those videos had me absolutely grinning ahah. So I'm slowly compiling a list of corps that I believe I'm interested in. In order of priority, this is what I think I want to find in my new corp: 1. Nullsec 2. Noob/Casual Friendly and willing to teach 3. 23/7 Mining Fleets with Orca/Rorq support 4. PvP 5. Well Established/Experienced/Plenty of Members (100+) 5. PvE
If there are other factors you guys suggest I should take into consideration, please don't hesitate to let me know!
Here are some corps that have caught my eye: Boa Innovations, Vulcan Industries, and Interstellar ORE Inc.
Can you tell me about these corps? |

Don't join a corp which advertises to do these things. Good corps are specialised, the ones that 'do it all' usually won't be good at a single one of the things they promote they do.
Honestly, i'm a filthy casual too. Lowsec piracy is often mixed in FW (they are just not joined in any faction, so they can shoot all sides) or close to FW regions. Look into the corp I'm part of, we're pirates very casual take on anyone and can do what you like, great help. Taught me just about everything.

Stop running yourself down as a "filthy casual" too. Do not let the basement dwelling neckbeards set the narrative. Playing a reasonable amount of time per week is healthy.
OP: get out there and try new things, but especially shoot nerds in spaceships. I have a bit of short attention span, so I have jump clones set to do large scale fleet actions, small gang trouble making, and for times I read forums and drink morning coffee, one set to make isk (ratting in my case). I then jump to the clone and do the activity that appeals to me at the time.
Just don't do it alone. People make EVE fun. |

I could not agree more. I think the "filthy casual" thing comes from other MMO's and I've not seen it in Eve. When I first came to Eve I recall how amazed I was to see RL > Eve posted in chat so often. I don't think that you'll find the "filthy casual" attitude much here in Eve. That's you putting that label on yourself. |

You're absolutely right, it's honestly just MMO speak I got from the other games I used to play ahah! I'm honestly all about the "you-do-you" attitude. 4 or 40 hours a week, whateva floats ya boat. |

There is no regulated content in this game. By that I mean no 40 v 40 BGs or 3 v 3 arena matches no 5 man dungeons and no 20 man raids. So the attitude here winds up being "the more the merrier" in most cases. IMHO it is a very refreshing change from the elietist 560 iLevel or GTFO attitude that I've seen elsewhere. Eve is much more like when we were kids and how ever many of us were on the playground we'd find something to do together. More play like and more fun. |
