How about giving capital ships the ability to turn into mobile Starbases? Carriers/Dreads-> small, Supers-> medium, Titans-> large. You can already use these ships to store things and refit, and pos modules could run off of the ships CPU and PG. Obviously, you can't just turn on POS mode in the blink of an eye, but they can online faster than a regular stick. They would not be able to online next to another POS, station, gate etc. Once in POS mode, they get a significant HP/resist buff, and follow POS mechanics, especially reinforcement. If they are engaged in POS mode then they get a timer to keep them in POS mode. If they get a timer you have to save it and then after the last timer it can immediately pack up and leave. They will still consume fuel blocks to keep up the shield, and strontium to determine reinforcement times. You can deploy them anywhere outside high-sec without notifying the locals.
Other thoughts: Carriers/Supers can have drones automatically protecting them Supers can use clone bays. Bowhead can be used to build subcaps Rorqual give reprocessing, moon, and PI support. Titans/Dreads can use their own guns Titans can DD (like an actual Deathstar), as well as jump bridges. Ships can use a cloak to hide themselves and contents(anchored things) from probes, but only if there are no other players logged in inside/within 2km of the shield
Obviously the costs of these ships would have to be reduced by a lot to make this feasible compared to regular old POS's, and they would attract more content than a bling-fit, BPO/skillbook filled Revenant gate jumping across low-sec once they are discovered. The idea is to use them as the central command units that everyone at one point probably imagined. Also, they keep other capital ships relevant because the best way to kill them will be with large ships that can only hit stationary targets.
Just imagine jumping in to attack in Fozzie sov, having a super find a nice spot, POSing up, and acting as a forward base over the course of the various attack times. Filled with clones and spare troll-ceptors or whatever, pilots killed in battle respawn immediately in system, reship, and join the fight again. Once the enemy figures out what is going on, they dust off their own capital fleet to kill the forward operating base while protecting the various capture points. Even after the super is reinforced, the timers give it just enough time to last throughout each attack phase, while being resupplied by cloaky transports all the time. Even though the enemy super fleet is killing the FOB, the attackers keep winning the fozzie battles. On the last day, the defenders show up to the last timer to finish off the FOB, knowing that they can't protect their own space. However, as the cap fleet lands on the super, they are met by HIC's and dictors. Soon enough, the attacker's own cap fleet jumps in to wipe out the defenders, killing both their cap fleet and their sov. |
