Hey
I am relatively new, but I was wondering if there _ever_ will be a database cleanup?
When I click through the offices of the millions of corps, I see so many corps who are dead links / inactive. Will CCP ever purge them and clean up?
Also all those containers used for aadvertizing, floating aroung in space, causing lag. Will the trash, that is months old, ever be wiped?
After all, there are 2 good reason for it: Less crowded space, and better performance due to less entities.

Not really needed, iirc theres only lag when the database entries are being called up, and if the corps are really dead, then their just going to be sitting there, not causing lag _________________________

I doubt that the lag is caused by dead corps. And cleaning up the db will only waste time that the devs could have spent on real problems :P

As far as I know an office expires when the rent is not paid. So theoretically these offices should close after a while. Not sure about this though.

Considering the advertising spam is intended to be at high-trafic gates, and everytime someone jumps to that gate then surely the server needs call and send that worthless data to the user, I think it's painfully obvious that they must cause a lot of lag. Not it all, but a lot.
Hell, GMs tell you to remove jetcans because they cause lag. Same should apply to advertising spam.

The can has a position, a name, identity etc. Lets just say 4 byte per axis, so 12 bytes here. All kind of properties, like the name being displayed (say 100 byte), what model to display (lets assume 20 bytes), and maybe other internal data we are not aware of. Maybe 140 bytes. On a stargate that has 15 cans in space, thats 2100 bytes. In Jita where you can see some 50 player around thats 104kb. I guess thats not really much, but since the cans are nearly everywhere it adds up. Besides, it just annoys having those things all over the place.

offices don't really bother me, and some of the can art within eve holds some history that I personally find interesting from time to time

At one point they gave a notice to remove secure cans from systems as after an undefined "grace period" they were going to remove them regardless.
Sadly it never happened.
I have the body of a supermodel. I just can't remember where I left it.

Pay the fee to concord to wardec those corps, and afk in space by their can 'art' with one laser firing on each of 8 targetted cans. Walk away from your computer, come back in a few hours to switch targets.
If the corps are 'dead' you don't have to worry about being ganked, right?

The dev's previously stated that old corporations can never die until ALL characters that were members of that corporation are deleted from the system. (Think employment history)

If corps don't exist anymore, how do they still have offices? Who's paying the rent?
Or do you keep an office slot even if you stop paying rent, just lose access to it?

Offices expire however if its your headquaters that never expires and will remain listed in the station for aslong as the corp exists. ---

I don't remember if it was a dev blog or a post on the forums, but one of the devs stated that the database performance isn't significantly impacted by the presence of records that are rarely queried (such as dead corps). They occupy room on storage, but he also said that the space occupied by dead corps (and unused characters) is very small. Basically, it's a non-issue as far as the database is concerned.
I don't know about the effect on the DB of anchored cans, but they certainly are a nuisance for the players.
I'd gladly put an expiration date on those, maybe resetting it every time they are opened.
When the time is up, CONCORD considers the container abandoned and attempts to destroy it will not be considered a criminal act. Hey, we might even allow people to hack abandoned containers in order to open them! That'd be cool.
