So, I got a letter today, quite surprised considering it was from the USA....and I never get letters from them.
Anyway, it was from some kind people imforming me that my domain (titanx3online.com), was due to expire in april 2007, and that I had better renew it (inotherwords pay them moneh) by december or my domain would stop working.
Ok, i suspected OMG SCAM....and a google search revealed I was, infact, correct. http://www.searchenginecollege.com/2005/06/domain-registry-of-america-scammers-at.html Just one of meny sites to be found by googleing Domain Registry Of America. http://support.easydns.com/domain.slammers/droa.php This site is a good copy of the type of letter/invoice they will send you. Almost excatly like the one I got.
What im concerned about is how in all of hell did they find my address. Blah oh well
IF YOU OWN A DOMAIN BE CAREFUL. JUST DONT PAY THEM. UTTER ******* SCAM. That is all.

Doing a whois command from console will tell you what you need: Registrar: NEW DREAM NETWORK, LLC your domain expires in april 2007 and theres also your e-mail there and billing address.
There is a dilema between hidding this information and letting it available for the public. I personaly am for it being hidden and available on request only at the registar, thus in case of problems the registar knows who was looking you up.
Before eating all my sigs you should know they are laxatives. |

Edited by: DubanFP on 03/11/2006 13:25:35 Here's something along the lines of that scam, BUT YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO FALL FOR IT TO GET NAILED BY IT. They just have to nail your voicemail system. I know my friend got a 600$ phone bill, i thought it was his fault though i didn't know how he managed it, and he couldn't pay. This news article came to my attention last night. I'm going to have to talk to him about it. I know i've also recieved several calls reading as "toll call" on caller ID and need to look it up myself. News Article

Had one of their letters for my domain, a few years back (they've been trying this on for a long time now, who knows why they haven't been stamped down on HARD), but already working in the industry, I was already of the scam going around so knew to ignore it...
It is worded in a way to make the unsuspecting person believe that control of the domain will be completely lost unless you pay them money to "save" it.

I've been getting letters from these ****ers continually over the past few years. Thing is, if you're careful enough to read the letter and realize who your registrar actually is, it's hard to fall for. But then, I work for a hosting company. :P I can imagine people out there who registered their domain names through weird services getting confused and ending up forking money over to these morons.
TBH, they need to be podded, and I don't mean in game. No idea how they've been getting away with it all these years, but hell, they make Network Solutions look like a good registrar.
