More than likely a false alert. That frequently happens with software that the AV companies havent had a look at. Try scanning the file with different anti-virus programs or with different versions of the same program. Only if you get multiple warnings from different programs, I would worry about it.
As long as its "trojan-gen" it more than likely is just a blanket assumption based on a few file fragments.

Only seems to happen to Avast! users - I'd put my money on it being a false positive and the OP being a tad over-excited.

As with any thing that gives a false positive, better to be more security minded then just, nah, it's nothing. Im not sure how Avast works, but Trend Micro (PcCillin) has an option to send in files that cause a false positive, for them to examine it to assess wether it's a threat or not.

Same result here with NOD32, and if NOD32 says it isn't a virus, then it isn't a virus

From what I know Avast! is a bit overprotective and oversensitive meaning that it gives a lot of false positives.

Edited by: Robert Dobbs on 04/11/2006 13:57:05 Trojan-gen means it is a HEURISTIC detection and as such has NOT detected anything at all.
If you don't want to look like an idiot in future, turn off heuristics, as they very rarely do any good.
P.S - DO NOT INSTALL NORTON!!! For gods sake people! Get an antivirus that won't slow your machine down to a crawl.. I suggest NOD32 www.eset.de

a trojan gen = trojan generator
something hackers/*****ers/idiots use to make trojans and viruses, not a virus itself
still its deleted by some security apps to prevent people to make viruses :)

Seconded. Everyone I know personally that has used Norton claims it slows their machine. I had it on my knock around laptop because it came with a subscription and I got rid of it. Not only was my machine a bit faster with it gone but it even connects to the network faster when coming out of hybernation.
I'm currently trialling Kaspersky on this machine and the only complaint I have is that it asks before updating its signatures. Seems pretty stupid to me - just how often is a user likely to say "no"? -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Same, altho symantec is pretty much Norton-lite, less protection and less CPU whoring.
