Ned, Why isn't your noob being educated? Somebody is dropping the ball.
Xantho,
Exploration can take place anywhere.
The riskier the area, the better the rewards in general.
Read this http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Exploration
Also, post in New Citizens Q&A, its a bit more new user friendly in there.

If you are new to exploring, I highly recommend you read up some guides before delving in.
When I first started exploring, I used: http://www.toptiertactics.com/21341/eve-online-exploration-guide-billions-and-billions-of-isk/#axzz3Yoch4qpz
If you are still learning the ins and outs of scanning and moving probes, I would suggest starting in high sec for practice scanning down cosmic signatures. You will also need to get your Archaeology, Hacking, Survey, and Astrometrics skills to Level 3 at the bare minimum.
Typically, most explorers who look for major ISK flow head towards WHs and null sec sites, but until you are more experienced I would suggest low sec as a stepping stone. |

once you get the basic's down in hi sec, move out to low then maybe WH or null space. but stick to cheap ships and fits until your confident in your ninja skills.

EvE Scout asking this? Tsk!
The answer to your query is long. I suggest you ask your corp in game, they will/should be able to give you some hands on help. I would suggest exlporing in Genesis region to start (Relic sties). I'l lbuy your armor plates =D |

Signal Cartel, HEH.
Best advice is to read up on the guide posted above. WingspanTT has great advice for explorers. |

Start by looking at the high-sec sites or sites in your carebear-null territory, just so that you can work out how to do all the various bits and pieces without anyone bothering you.
Once you're fairly confident that you can play the hacking minigame and watch d-scan at the same time shift to low-sec if you started in high or wormholes if you started in sov-null, and from there go wherever the spirit of adventure sends you.
The main mistake you'll likely make early on is thinking that you need an "exploration ship" to explore. You can do exploration on any ship you slap a probe launcher and an analyzer or hacking module on, and can make up the difference in probe strength bonuses with modules, rigs, and implants fairly easily without wasting too many slots on it. |

Im just starting to fit the Heron for exploring. Is there another ship you would recommend that's better for starting out? |

He is correct that you don't need to use an exploration ship but there is not a compelling reason to not use a ship bonused for the task you are trying to accomplish.
So, no there is no better ship to start of with than a heron.

The Heron is an excellent exploration ship. His comment was simply noting that ships are much more flexible than most people believe in EVE, and you shouldn't need to feel limited by its role bonuses. Of course, if you're trying to focus on a specific objective such as exploring, there is nothing wrong with using a ship meant for that. |
