FACTA NON VERBA

Why when we target ships can we see the shields, armor and hull of the target ship?
How much more of an adrenaline rush would it be if you are pounding away at a target not knowing what his tank is like. It would be more about who had the biggest balls rather than who had the best tank / dps.
Imagine two fully fitted T2 ships going head to head. They can see there own shields/armor going down and can estimate how long they think they can keep going but what they can't see is how well or badly the opponent is doing. This could lead to some interesting situations whereby you might think you are winning then pop you're in your pod or visa versa.
You could even take things a little further. By changing or adding to the ship scanners. Instead of only being used by suicide squads in Jita it could be a useful mod and show you the info on the opponents shields / armor etc. Then you need to decide do you forgo a damage / tank mod for a scanner and see how you are doing compared to your opponent or do you stay blind and just go for it.
Anyway I think it would be a great idea (but I would it is my idea). Please let me know what you think and lets see who has balls and who should be my b*tch. Its better to burn out than to fade away!!!! |

Interesting idea but I don't really like it.
Say you have a 10 vs 10
The fleet commander calls a scorpion primary but little does the FC know the scorpion is tanked like no tomorrow ( this actually does happen ) so everyone fires on the scorpion but notice it isn't going down, and by the time they finally switch targets or kill it 3-4 people have already gotten blown up.
Or say dreads are attacking one of your towers. How do you know if you are breaking it's tank or not? You could spend 5 minutes pounding on a well tanked dread while a not so well tanked one manages to get away.
And I don't really think people want to waist one of their slots for a ship scanner, especially the amarr.

But thats the point, it makes pvp more interesting and could make remote rep'ing more feasible in fleet engagements. Its better to burn out than to fade away!!!! |

I kind of like it too actually. Scary to not know how the fight is going, but still pretty cool....

As much as I like the idea, it would make the already steap learning curve enourmous! Imagine noobs coming in, not knowing typical setups for ships, and they have no idea what they can and cannot beat. So they'd have to learn all of this through experience? New players already *****, now we are just gonna give them something else to ***** about? Other than that though, pretty good idea, after some tweaking I suppose. --

Yeah, that idea is interesting. Would for sure make engagements a helluva lot more scary.

I especially like employing a ship scanner to gain status info on your foe. It would give that module new utility in a fight. Thumbs up.

Imagine the smack in local:
"haha, you're not breaking my tank"
"man, that didn't even scratch my shields"
Suddenly people with epeen issues will have a whole new way to smacktalk '
Other than that, I like the idea.

Edited by: Beringe on 06/11/2006 21:06:26 I think it might be more of an annoyance than a benefit. Especially when hunting NPCs.
But if it only applies to PVP, and maybe we had a module to help the scanner gauge the status of the enemy, it could be pretty cool. ------------------------------------------- "Never underestimate the power of language."

Honestly it sounds like fighting while wearing a blindfold. You are pretty sure you do hit but you can't confirm anything. It might be a good idea when combined with the scanner. Otherwise it is pointless imho.

Edited by: SadisticSavior on 06/11/2006 22:14:21 I would like to implement it halfway; add some ambiguity to combat.
I like seeing the stats not because it is easier, but because it is more realistic. If you are doing damage to a ship, you will obviously see it's hull getting scarred and you will have sensors that give you information about it's status. We see that in pretty much every space movie ever made.
Since the game engine wont allow for visible damage on the hull, I think the stats are the next best thing. But I do think it would be cool if there were random variables inserted so that you never know the exact status of the enemy ship...just an approxiamate reading that has a possibility of being wrong. That would make it both more interesting and more realistic IMO.

make it so that seeing enemy shields/armor/hull is a battlecruiser and destroyer bonus. if ganged with one of these ships everyone in the gang would see things as we do now. otherwise no clue.

Give that bonus to command ships or Force recon. even if not i'd love to see this in eve, just because I lock a target up, don't mean I should automaticly know what that pod guy had for lunch

I like the idea of not being able to count down the enemy on a definite scale.
Then again there are those who need their information to get by. I'd suggest sporadic combat messages hinting on the tide of the battle, telling you for example that their shields are gone, if you believe the info you may opt for another ammo and if it holds true you're way ahead of the other guy that may have gotten the same message but went with his gut instead.

Interesting idea, sounds like fleet battle lag to me
But seriously imaginge the whine of missile users, two, three or even four salvos lost. Infact up to max flight time of missiles... I don't use missiles often but caldari already have a PVP penalty regarding direct damage, in fleet battles, while shooting at tertiary targets they are often primary. End of story you fly a raven? HAHA get out a moa or ferox. Same thing can apply to drones. TBH it would just be not fair. On the other hand it would be cool if ship scanners would allow you to highten the chance of getting critical hits and while I'm at it, maybe the cargo scanner would improve the survival rate of loot. PvPers, Pirates and High Sec Gankers rejoice
PS: I know what a target painter does and the ship scanner would have a partly similar but still different effect. --------------- When I was young I wanted to be me, my childhood dream came true |

Edited by: coldplasma on 06/11/2006 22:46:45 Whether current PVP is realistic is not the issue. In every game like this, you have to strike a balance between fun and realism, and even though this may provide an increased atmosphere of realism, it will ultimately just be annoying and won't be seen as fun by a lot of people. The operation was successful, but the patient died.

I would like it IF:
1) when you was hitting shields, you could see on their ship their shields being hit
2), when you was hitting armor, like it is currently. 3) when you are hitting hull, there are bangs and explosions from the ship, and more flames etc :)

I think it will just encourage more blobbing. If I don't know how much damage I'm doing I'll just get more boys to do even more damage to make sure.
