I hear it will be run on seperate servers and when the game crashes you will still be able to speak.
Considering voice comms run through your client, that would be rather hard... Node crash = client crash = no longer logged in on ingame voice comms.
Although voice may be run through a diffrent server it still runs through your client, hence client side lag should screw up voice comms as well.
I doubt any PVP active corp/alliance will switch to this tbh.
Who says it runs through the client? CCP certainly haven't. There's no need for it do any such thing. The game client and chat client only need to communicate and work together. If the game client crashes the chat client will still be there.
Given that CCP have already said that it involves minimal coding that is pretty obviously the model they have gone for. You could do the same thing for TS if CCP provided the required hooks or messaging facility.
It just depends if the voice chat client can run separately or not.
Edit:Bah. Looks like the client either is integrated or just won't take over the UI. On Sisi you lose voice if the client dies. Bah. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Teamspeak/Vent are not free. Someone is paying for the server that everyone connects to. True that a server can be run off a home connection but most home connections can not handle the bandwidth usage for a large fleet op.

From what I understand, CCP is going to charge everyone in my alliance $1 to use this. Lets say there are 800 people in my alliance. $800/month will buy a hell of a lot of bandwidth, more than eve-radio asks for in donations in a month for example, and they're streaming 24/7 at 96kbit to hundreds of people at a time! --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

The price of $1 a month has not been confirmed this is just the rumored price that consumers are willing to pay for this feature.
And from what I gather... we are not paying CCP at all for the chat... we are going to be paying for the voice service by the people who provide it... Vivox.
So CCP is not asking for all that money for bandwidth... And as a business move... even though it is a much cheaper subscription cost per month than say VoIP phone service... it looks like Vivox has found a very good investment... a cheap way to "provide for the better good" I'd like to say...
Hmmm... but maybe ccp should just raise the subscription costs by a dolar a month... and just pay for the whole cluster to have VoIP access... /me shrugs... what do you think?

*edit* I try not to leave unanswered questions or accusations... but anyone has any more questions feel free to stop by the stickied thread about Voice Chat located here http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=422023 --- Still waiting for CCP to hire me...! They don't have a Dev named Nate yet... Their hire button must have lagged out... Don't worry... SoonÖ |
