Okay, I've just read through Halada's guide to mining (hats off to him for such a great job) and he points out that the Domi makes a very fine miner, especially for lower sec mining, as it can fit so many Miner IIs and still have a great tank, plus hold a tonne of drones for fighting off rats.
I am just tryting to decide whether or not to go ahead with training up Industry and what not to get into a mining barge, or to go ahead and train up BS for the Domi.
I know that I will be going ahead with the Domi eventually anyway, and I don't want to become a professional miner. The main reason that I am even looking for a miner set up is that I do A LOT of trading, and I find that I am often in station for an hour or two at a time setting trades. That's an hour or two that I could have been mining at the same time! Plus, even when I'm not trading (which is rare) I often have EVE windowed so that I can work on any one of the million or so writing projects that I have on the go. I've been doing courier missions (high sec only of course) this way, and seems like I can mine this way too.
So... thoughts? Worth it to head up to a mining barge, or should I just say the heck with it and get my Domi now?

The funny thing about a Domi is that even with a full rack of miners, you can still pwn most other ships.
It makes for a good low sec solo-mining boat. Don't forget to get some mining drones too. A barge's drones won't save you from the bigger NPCs that spawn in lowsec.

It's ultimately your choice, really (between the barge and the Domi, that is). I don't remember the comparative figures between the Dominix, the Retriever (medium barge) and the Covetor (large barge), so I don't remember which mines more between the Dominix and the Retriever, but if you don't want to be a professional miner, then you may not want to train for the Covetor (that's a total of 2,138,510 skill points exactly, as a bare minimum). So then you're down to either the Dominix or the Retriever, of the two the Retriever is obviously cheaper but the Dominix probably mines just about as much. Actually I just checked and it does mine a bit more than a Retriever, so forget about the Retriever altogether. You can still train Astrogeology up. --- High quality pics of ALL EVE ships!

For what you do, I think barge is the best. Domi is sweet for mining low sec but in the setups I've had, a retriever can out mine a Domi. Follow this up with 50% better mining (or more) in a Covetor and your best option for hisec mining IMHO is a Covetor.

I've never run acrost a spawn in lowsec that a full set of hobgoblin IIs(hammer IIs if you bother to train up for the covetor) with decent skill couldn't make short work of, to be honest.
The real problem is the inherent frailty of barges in pvp situations(think frigate).
Which is why I don't mine.
Or fy barges.

A Domi is one of the most versatile ships in the game. If you train up for a Domi you can mine, tank and defend yourself if the need arise's were as a coveter goes splat pretty quickly.
Plus when you have a Domi for mining you can refit for npcing and pvping as you need.

So, while opinions seem mixed, I think the majority is thinking the same way that I am - the Domi is by far more versatile, I can mine in relative safety (that's one huge tank, and I can pull in my mining drones II and launch 5 heavies or 5 mediums in a heartbeat) whereas the lower barges (i.e. not the Covetor) are a bit too fragile for me.
Granted, with relatively low skills (just *****ed the two million mark) I am taking a chance flying such a big ship, but if I stick to relatively high sec space, and am ****ed careful I should be able to avoid pirates and wipe rats off the asteroids while I go back to mining.
Thanks for your input folks. Much appreciated.

a retreiver can not even come close to mining like a Domi can, i mine while i chain rat on 0.0 space . i do not even stop mining when the rat BSs warp back in. i just use it for extra income
My Domi is also outfitted with 6 Modulated Deep Core Miner IIs and i also use Mining Drones IIs and its fairly easy to earn 70 mil per hour minumin
even though i have higher skills a basic Domi fitted with 6 miner IIs mines far more than a retriever especially if you make use of mining drones
i do not mean for this to sound like im flaming the post either . Halada is who i owe my skills to, he is king :_) i know this was a post 3-4 months old but i would like to encourage ppl to look at the Domi diferent
p.s. i hate spill check , i am an old man and have earned the rite to type at my level

Clar has it right here are the numbers for you to compare.
Domi - 6 miner II's and 5 miner II drones 60u/min (base) * 1.2 (mining 4) * 1.2 (astrogeo 4) * 6 (# of turrets) * 1.05 (upgrade 1) * 1.05 (upgrade 2)* 1.05 (upgrade 3) = 600.1128u / min
Retreiver - 2 strip miner I's and 5 miner II drones 540u/3 min* 1.2 (mining 4) * 1.2 (astrogeo 4) * 2 (# of turrets) * 1.05 (upgrade 1) = 1632.96u / 3 min or 544.32 u /min
This comparison dosn't include any other mining bonuses and dosn't take into account that both ships are using the same mining drones and gain no bonuses to the drones.
Also the domi is capable of protecting its self while the retreiver is not.

Mining guide
When you can fly a coverator, with T2 modulated crystals with the types you want, and can get a decent sized gang, fly it. But if you think about solo mining, BS are usually better for it... ___ P.S. Post with your main. Mind control and tin hats |

Dont forget that the retriver also get a 3% bonus mining yield for every mining barge lvl. So if you train it to lvl 3 you would still be below domi with 544.32*1.09=593,3. If you train it to lvl 4 you would be better than the domi with 544,32*1,12=609,6. But the difference is so small that the domi looks better anyway :)
