Vote no on Prop 86: Tax on Cigarettes
Summary Prepared by the State Attorney General: Imposes additional $2.60 per pack excise tax on cigarettes and indireclty increases taxes on other tobacco products. Provides funding for various health programs, children's health coverage, and tobacco-related programs. Put on the Ballot by Petition Signatures
Fiscal Impact from the Legislative Analyst: Increase in excise tax revenues of about $2.1 billion annually in 2007-08 spent for the specified purposes outlined above. Other potentially significant costs and savings for state and local governments due to program changes.
Meaning of Voting Yes/No A YES vote on this measure means: The existing state excise tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products would increase by $2.60 per pack to support new or expanded programs for health services, children's health coverage, and tobacco-related activities. Other existing programs supported with tobacco excise taxes would continue.
A NO vote on this measure means: State excise taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products would remain at the current level of 87 cents per pack and would continue to be used for existing purposes, including childhood development programs and various health and tobacco-related programs
VOTE NO! If it passes, I am going on a killing spree in the EVE universe. None shall be spared. Because I DONT wanna pay any more for cigarettes since their expensive as it is.
SO DO YOU PART! VOTE NO. and help keep the price of cigarettes the same.
<.< and no, this tax is not going to hurt the tobacco companies. Just the consumers. ___________________ I love you -Cortes I love him more -Suvetar I love him the most -Oveur Back off he's mine. All Mine --Eris

I don't consider myself someone who ever supports new taxes, but the highlighted statement above proves the point of those who support such taxes. It is your choice, a privilege you take advantage of, and can be taxed, just like anything. You choose to smoke, therefore you choose the consequences of such an action, be it health risks or taxation.
Personally, I think such taxes are stupid. Do we REALLY want people to live longer and longer? The longer people live, the more the healthcare system will strain from the increased pressure.
I say: Save Social Security! Free smokes and booze for all!

What a crock.
This tax does nothing but force people who are ADDICTED to a DRUG give money to the government.
I'm glad I quit smoking a month ago, but BS tax laws like this are just disgusting.

Edited by: Arges on 07/11/2006 20:47:21 Since it seems the new cool thing to do is fix erroneous posts these days, I'll jump in on the bandwagon just this once. Soooo, here it goes:
Here, fixed it for you.
Originally by: DarknessInc SO DO YOU PART! GET HEALTHY. and help keep the price of cigarettes high enough so the smokers finally decide to spend more money on stuff that's actually good for them... like a 2nd account.
Of course this law is to discourage smokers from buying more cigarettes! It's not targeted at the tobacco companies at all. A similar law has been passed in Canada and smoking has now been banned from public places entirely. Is it a good thing? HECK YES!!!
Cry for the freedom to "kill yourself however you want" until you run out of breath (which theoretically shouldn't take very long ), any person with his/her head on his/her shoulders will know that's bull. Tobacco companies are making ginormous ammounts of money off of selling products that are now almost ADVERTISED as being a source of cancer and people still spend thousands per year on that stuff? Think about it this way... would you send someone millions of ISK for podding you over and over again. That's even like paying for their ammo!
Personnaly, if the tobacco companies can screw us over that way, I don't see why governments can get their fair share of the deal. Please understand that this is not meant as flaming or trolling at all but it just gets to me when I hear people whining over the price they have to pay to poison themselves.
And don't forget that your Governator will pay for for his stoogies too. And more money to healthcare programs and childhood developement programs? I'd say paying a few bucks more for this is worth it, no? Think of the children!
Anyway, that's enough ranting for today. I'll get back to my lurking ways.

I don't mind the tax, what I don't want is the government to get the money.
That money should go to ppl who get cancer from second hand smoke.
I believe we need to ween all humans off of tobacco and abolish smoking once and for all, so anything that makes more ppl quit is good, even taxation. I just don't like who gets the money. ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE

Smoking should be taxed fairly heavily in all countries which provide a minimum of free healthcare, since smokers tend to be expensive in their old age. Nothing curious about that. -----

The government didn't force them to be addicted to nicotine (they got there on their own), and they can still get gum and the patch to get their nicotine fix.
It's hard for me to have any sympathy for smokers. My lungs burn when I walk into bars that are very smoky, and I hate having wash my bar/club clothes that would be otherwise perfectly clean. Smoking is a useless activity that helps no one. With this law, you're basically just donating money to healthcare for children every time you buy a pack. Is that really such a horrible thing?

The government needs to get its irresponsible spending under control, before levying new taxes of any kind. _______

Wow, talk about gouging smokers. They should be happy that people smoke, seeing as those of us who do smoke probably won't suck down social security like all you "health" folks do. We will die too youg But seriously, I'm working on quitting, really, I am! I live in Illinois or Wisconsin depending on the time of year, and I don't even pay $2.60 per pack in Wisconsin! With a buy-one-get-one deal I end up paying about $2.30 per pack. Thats after taxes!

retarded! In AZ there's an 80 cent boost that I think is messed up as basicly the whole community benifits at the expense of the few... This sounds so close to "Taxation without representation" A belive that this country is founded on.

You are correct that the government is spending its money irresponsibly. But I'm fairly confident when a law specifies that the money received from a specific source will go directly to healthcare, that it will actually be used for healthcare.

Yea. but saying Smokers should have to pay more taxes because their habit is unhealthy is just stupid. Might as well say people who drink alcohol should get a massive tax on alcohol. Such and such.
When Im in Switzerland, Im happy to pay out 6 Swiss Francs (5.50 USD or something) for a pack of smokes, because their quality cigarettes and I love them. But here in the US their quality is less compared to the European brands, IMO.
and not to be racist, but this tax might not even be needed if there were not so many illegal aliens mooching off the Welfare and Free Clinics in California, mainly SoCal, which costs the California government millions if not billions each year, paying to take care of people who arent even legal citizens.
But I have respect for those illegals that are trying to become americans. learning english, getting occupational training, filling out forms for a Greencard of Citizenship. I commend them because their trying to have an american dream. But I do not like it how there are a larger number out there who would rather try to force California to ADAPT to them, instead of them adapting to the way California is.
Where I live there are alot of illegal aliens. but they speak perfect english, have good jobs and are in the process of getting their Citizenship. Thats what ALL the illegal aliens in california should be doing, but a majority of them are not, and are putting a major financial drain upon California.
And these new taxs are just another way to get more money out of citizens to pay for the lack of funds California has because of California's goodness being taken advantage of.
and I know some are going to say Im cruel or racist or that these people are just trying to get an American dream but a majority arent. Thats the bottom line, They ARE NOT trying to become legal american citizens ___________________ I love you -Cortes I love him more -Suvetar I love him the most -Oveur Back off he's mine. Their habit is not only unhealthy, but is a health hazard and a nusiance to other people. I wouldn't mind an extra tax on alcohol either. Maybe some people will actaully learn how to have fun without getting ****faced and acting like retards.

The government didnt force you to go to that club did they? Its the same type of judgmentalism.
My basic problem is they should either ban cigs or stop treating them like a cash cow. A few years ago states sued big tobacco and won 100's of billons of dollars. So, they are complicit because they want the tax revenue so they dont have to make the real decisions.
