I know, it's guache to request blue response to pretty much any matter, but this comes up in our comms frequently... It's rending our very core (corps?) and it's destroying our joie de vie!
What is the lore-correct pronunciation of Quafe and Gallente? (And by extension most of the Gallente words.)
Their leadership and spelling seems to suggest French origin, making them COfh and gaLENt, respectively -- but popular pronunciation among players is the more American-ized KWAYF and Guh-Len-Tay.
How much did French pronunciation survive the collapse of the EVE Gate and re-emergence of New Eden's various societies?
Help me Obi-Wan-CCP, you're our only hope! |

Back when I only played the game and never listened or watched anything about it, I use to pronounce Quafe like Caf+¬ with a Q.
But I don't really think that's relevant.
Of course, CCP has two YouTube channels they upload to, so you can reference one of them for a CCP member saying "Quafe."

Yes, but I don't know how reliable we can consider them, as they're only speaking as lay-persons in this regard, too. I don't know who specifically is in charge of the language part of the lore. |

Gallente and fitting into a latin/french etymology - I would suggest that at some point in the past an acute accent fell off the last 'e'.
Gallent+¬ is far easier to see. The remaining questions are at the start of the word; a hard 'g' appears to be universally accepted so we're left with the choice of 'al' or 'all'...
Quafe is easier from my perspective, it's not an invented word after all. It is a manner of drinking (usually alcohol) with a certain degree of exhuberance... But that adds a third option for your coms - "kwoff" . |

Gah - len - tay my brothers and sisters. Peace be upon you.
Something like Quafe is a proprietary name, so the pronunciation would likely be whatever the founders of the corporation decided it would be, such as Xerox. Ze-rocks. Americans and the limies I expect tend to call that kwayf all in one syllable as they share the word:
quaff - kw+ñf - verb verb: quaff; 3rd person present: quaffs; past tense: quaffed; past participle: quaffed; gerund or present participle: quaffing
1. drink (something, especially an alcoholic drink) heartily. synonyms:drink, swallow, gulp (down), guzzle, slurp, down, empty; More imbibe, partake of, consume; informalkill, swig, swill, slug, knock back, toss off, chug, chugalug, scarf (down) "they quaffed a few beers before heading home"
Since Quafe is a drink, it would appear to us the inventor of the word would have "quaff" in mind. It's irresistible, though has nothing to do with being correct. Eventually, everybody yields to how words are said by someone who's supposed to know. This happens as a matter of course. Maybe a business reporter will inquire to ensure getting it correct for a broadcast, or something.
As far as Gallente? I am Gallente and I'm tellin' you say it either "gah - len - tay" or we won't shoot you if you say "gah - len - tee", unless you're Amarrian...or Caldari. You know how that goes.

So, this is how the character creation video from the game client pronounces Gallente: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJmL28cbULc
I can't find a canonical video where someone says "Quafe", however, 99% of people pronounce it like this: https://youtu.be/dVEGBD-ojO8?t=31, so I'd be floored if someone said that was incorrect. The only other pronunciation I've heard is like splindivits pronouciation of "quaff": http://www.forvo.com/word/quaff/. |

I've always gone with "Gal-en-tay" and "qwafe" (much like Clear Skies on that one).
However, what if "quafe" is like the "new york" pronunciation of "coffee"? Which ends up sounding like "kwor-fee" in the really extreme imitations of that style of pronunciation. |

Once you break it down it's much easier to pronounce!
