from what has been said yes. Valk is a rift launch title.
Edit: not a dev nor do i speak or claim to speak for ccp, but it has been said in the forums numerous times valk is a rift launch title. CCP will need to clarify if this changed

Word on the street, or in technical rags, is that the rift is a dead man walking.
Why?
The hype from Occulus was that their product had amazing specifications and capabilities. This is why Zuckerberg bought the company for 2 billion. Because of its "amazing, ground breaking tech".
So, how much ground has it broken?
Exactly nothing. And nothing before 2016, and probably nothing then either, because Occulus have never actually brought any product to market before.
So what? Well, so everything. The whole value of Occulus was based on the idea that their tech was so advanced. That means "able to get to market before everyone else", right? I mean, that is the long and short of having "advanced tech". Sooner or later everyone will be able to do what you do right now, so getting to market first is the whole point of having advanced tech.
And here is some market context, as we look forward to a maybe someday in 2016 scenario from Occulus:
1. Microsoft have now entered this field in strength, with the Hololens. Microsoft are never a re sure thing with new tech, but they do have vast world of market penetration and software assets to facilitate the development of their tech. No matter how bad their tech is, they will push it to the ends of the earth. That is how they roll. If it doesn't suck, it will become a major competitor to the rift.
2. Sony have a product that is more polished than Occulus, and they have vast libraries of graphical content. They also have access to supply chains of new tech components at rates Occulus can only dream of. So they are going to ship a better product, with way better content, at a better price. This isn't new. They always were going to "catch up" to the Occulus tech. The point was that Occulus were going to get to market first, and so set trends for content and development.
3. VIVE. HTC and Valve (Steam online games) have teamed up to make their own contribution, and all reports are that it has amazing capabilities. Like Sony and Microsoft, Steam are proven operators in the field of software marketing, and they have special depth of reach in the gaming community. If this tech is popular, these partners have the background to get it built at a reasonable cost and get it to market effectively.
So now Occulus says that they are not getting to market before 2016. And we know that they have mega industry heavyweights closing in on this market. Microsoft, Sony, HTC, Steam. All of them have "working prototypes", just like Occulus. All of them have rave reviews. Just like Occulus.
And they all have industrial experience and actual market penetration for the product they are developing.
Unlike Occulus.

Slight misinformation here as the Hololens is Augmented Reality and not Virtual. The nearest thing I can compare it to is the Google Glass, as it super-imposes certain elements into your current vision rather than replacing it as with a VR headset.

How about just wait and see how things will end up? There aren't many companies doing good VR hardware or innovation, and Oculus has done plenty.. :)
People seem to forget that 3 years ago there was no VR going on really, just ashes of the past!

So... you're saying that developing for Occulus is sort of like developing a Planet Side 2 competitor for a console on its deathbed, just before the release of a new generation of consoles? Because hey! You can still buy the old console at pawn-shops or if you live in the developing world?! Besides, you can MT it like crazy without having to worry about Jita riots and genuine subscription losses ?! |

2016 is too late for Occulus.
a few things:
1) none of these other systems have Valkyrie
2) Occulus has had unit out for testing and game devlopment for a few years now, base don that alone, there is a really good chance that when occulus launches in 2016 it will have more games and appliacaiton that work for it then work for the others.
3) If the VR guys all band together, then it won;t really matter in the end, what headset you get. Just like it doesn;t matter which monitor you get.
4) You were prolly the guy who said Cd's will never take off, because tapes and 8tracks and records are good enough.
just because the rift might be out later form the gate then the others doens;t mean a lot. It could mean it can;t grab market share, but as the rift has been out already and has lots of things already devloped for it, i think this won;t be the case. But its way too soon to know. The other head sets could suck, or have issues getting out the door, or all kinds of other things due to not as much testing as occulus has had. So we will see. Still i'm buying a rift and valk. So i'm excited

Advanced technology has absolutely nothing to do with being able to bring it to market before someone else. Advanced tech is advanced tech.

except it is not advanced.
Sony already has a head mounted display that can be used for gaming, TV or smartphones for years. it just costs 1k Gé¼ and is a luxury product. other companys have released head mounted displays too.
the whole point of the morpheus (and the other VR googles) is to make it cheaper with consumer grade stuff while still being comfortable and without big loss of quality. |

I think I associate the name Sony with that tech. I forget the name of the hooray henry outfit that failed to get to market with a viable product in time.
But don't get me wrong. I want only the best things for Valkyrie, and I am also enthusiastic about CCP and the work they are doing. It looks awesome.
I just hope their software is going to be open enough to allow choice in the market of VR gear, because market economics and soviet quality televisions.

That is if the rift fails. We really dunno yet. My hope though, if that eventually it won;t matter which head set you get, you can play any vr game on any headset, but its prolly gonna be like any new tech war, and the winner will control the store.
but sometimes, getting tot he market FIRST is not a good a thing either.
Both the Sega CD and Philips CD-I hit the market in dec 91. three years later, another device came that killed both thouse devices and won. that device... the Sony Play Station. just because Valve's head set might hit the market first doens't mean anything. And just because the rift will hit second and have valk doesn;t mean anything either. the better headset should win. Or this could be the difference between owning a gateway computer or a HP computer, both do the same, run the same stuff, but its brand loyataly. so who knows. It doesnt have to be VHS vs. Beta Max or DVD vs.. i forget.. or Blu-Ray vs. HD DVD. Only time will tell

Not really the same thing. None of those have head tracking and will not give you a VR experience, and even if you strapped on extra sensors they would be s**t because the screens aren't designed for VR (high frame-rate, low persistence). It's a completely different type of product.
And the VR headsets are advanced. Carmack re-purposed code from his rocket company to write new firmware for the motion sensors in the early Rift prototype, so it's literally rocket science. |

So now we have 3 major products to be released around the same time in Q1 of 2016.

LOL its like graphics market of the 90's all over again. I bet it ends the same way too. The question is what player in the VR world is the Occulus Rift? Is FB/Oculus the "S3 Virge" of VR or are they the "3DFX" or "Nvidia" of VR? Personally I'm betting that the rift will be the good 1st/2nd gen hardware and eventually get eclipsed.
