hi I am Charlotte, my bf play EVE at home, seemingly shooting lasers on roids and he called it mining. I find this very boring and wonders how he actually keep doing it all the time.
so I googled this game and from various sources this game is not just the mining game "he" plays. so I started to play this game yesterday, hopefully blowing him up in surprise one day (he didn't know I joined the game, probably until one day he **** me off and I decided to shoot his ugly looking mining ship)
so this is the problem, although there are various guides and that AURA thingy, I still don't understand how the skill training thingy worked, as skills are obviously related to how things work, but how?
I read about modules, they are supposed to do their things like guns are shooting and plates are tanking, does it mean I can put all the things on and go ahead? I have literally no idea.
and the market. certainly things cost bucks (I think it is isk here?), how do I earn enough bucks to buy the things I needed? and no please don't say mining, I have seen enough of it.
thanks for advice in advance, please help me delivers the best surprise to an unexpected poor soul, i want him to play game like a game, not sitting there watching the fxxking monitor doing literally NOTHING. he needs to learn a lesson here |

Most skills give a bonus, so each level you train things get better. Some skills have a description that says what they do and what the bonus is per level. For some other skills they don't do anything on their own, but the item they affect has the bonus on it (mostly the spaceship command skills). Also in many cases skills are required to fit items to ships, or to fly the ship.
you can put whatever on, but that is usually inefficient. most ships have generally accepted fittings. Supposedly EVE-Uni has a bunch of decent fittings.
many ways to make isk. My prefered way is by killing NPCs and collecting bounty, also by running missions and collecting LP, then trading the LP for items and selling the items on the market. Can also try Exploring, various sites in space can drop a lot in mods that you can sell on the market for isk. And there is always trading (although I find that about as fun as mining)
and I'm 100% with you, gotta fly around have fun and blow stuff up!

Charlotte Momaki wrote:hi I am Charlotte, Hello.
Let's get started.
Charlotte Momaki wrote:so this is the problem, although there are various guides and that AURA thingy, I still don't understand how the skill training thingy worked, as skills are obviously related to how things work, but how? The gist of it is...
- each skill allows you to either fit or use certain ships or modules
- the higher the skill is... the more it enhances that ship or module NOTE: ship skills give blanket enhancement for certain ship classes and racial types... but the bonuses themselves are based on and tied to the individual hulls (you have to check their info)
- certain ships, weapons, and modules utilize certain skills more than other skills... this takes time to understand so don't worry and take your time.
- to get new skills... you buy skills from stations, inject them, and then drag them into your skillque. They will train in real time... whether you are online or not.
For a more in-depth breakdown of the skill system and what it means for you... look at the link in my signature at the bottom of this post.
Charlotte Momaki wrote:I read about modules, they are supposed to do their things like guns are shooting and plates are tanking, does it mean I can put all the things on and go ahead? I have literally no idea. Pretty much... however...
- fitting a ship is more of an "mathematical art form."
- you want to focus your ship's fit towards a specific goal or tactic. If you try to fit to do multiple things, you will be operating at less than "optimal" with all of them.
- refer back to skills and ships. Certain ships have bonuses towards using certain weapons and/or modules. Check the ship info boxes to see what each ship will be "optimal" using.
Charlotte Momaki wrote:and the market. certainly things cost bucks (I think it is isk here?), how do I earn enough bucks to buy the things I needed? and no please don't say mining, I have seen enough of it. Be creative. Unless it breaks the EULA (End User License Agreement) you can do almost anything to earn money. Most of it is pretty common sense, but if you have questions... ask on the forums or submit a petition via the help menu.
That said... I have seen people make ISK doing...
- mercenary work: muscle for hire. Not everyone enjoys player vs player combat... some enjoy PvP excessively. And some people are willing to pay pretty pennies to wish harm on others.
- playing the market: buy low, sell high
- hauling: just as boring as mining is... but fraught with a fair bit more danger. Can be combined with "playing the market" if you are enterprising enough
- exploring: find stuff in space... hope for a good run of luck
- leading: can you herd cats effectively? Can you instill people with the urge to do things they may not want to do? You can make money this way by making others work for YOU and skimming off the top.
- missions and traditional PvE type farming: pretty standard fare in an MMO. Self explanatory.
- propagandist: yes... this is a real thing. Organizations of people will pay you to be a mouthpiece... more if you are skilled at using photo or video software.

When in doubt, right-click on things to see what the options are. For example, right-clicking a skill book from tutorials would have given you "inject skill" and "train immediately to 1".
Similarly, right-clicking skills in the training window or book form and going to "info" will give you a summary of what the skill does. The only exception to this are spaceship command skills, where what the skill does varies from boat to boat and is in the _ship_ info.
Moving stuff around (e.g. moving skills in the queue into different orders, or moving items between different containers) is generally drag and drop. It's the easiest way to fit things on a ship, too.
So... right click things, and drag/drop things, and eventually you'll work most things out. |

this is awesome
no you cant just put anything on any ship (well you can but its not advised) ships have specific bonuses for different things
Amarr Ships use lasers and usually armor tank gallente use hybrid guns and usually armor tank minmatar are the best and you should always fly minmatar (uses projectile and shield tank) caldari uses missiles and also shield tank
these are basic some ships can work with different weapons and different tanks, but never mix different weapons and never use both armor and shield tanking on same ship.
if you skill up say a frigate, once you get that skill to lvl 3 you will unlock destroyers, if you continue to train frigates to lvl 5 you will theoretically unlock tech 2 frigates (alot more powerful than tech 1) with some additional skills.
do you intend to play for long or just to shoot your bf? if you just want to shoot your bf you should aim yourself towards a thrasher which is a winmatar destroyer, commonly used for shooting miners, these will use projectile autocannons.
if you look at ships you like the look of there is a "requirements" tab which will show you what skills are required to fly it

Expect failures, try it on other poor souls first, when you are comfortable with it go **** on your bf's barge.

I feel like you should read this as well. You seem to be the type and it might help you come up with a more sinister plan than simply blowing him up. ;)
Solecist Project wrote:There's generic game play and social interaction.
Mining. Missions. Trading. Exploring. Any form of combat, consensual or not.
But there's more. Way more. The interactive part.
Cruising around, watching local and looking for opportunities.
There's a fight going on. You lock both combatants, wait for one to die, steal the loot and gtfo asap.
You scan down mission runners and steal their loot, or try to bait them into a fight in your ship.
You find a ganker at a gate. Wait for him to kill something, grab the victim's loot and gtfo asap. (got lucky yesterday, made 800mill that way)
You join a corp. If the corp gets wardecced and the CEO is **** and tells you to stay docked instead of teaching you to fight ... you contact the wardeccer and play snitch.
You join a corp and steal their stuff.
You start talking in local and become a local celebrity with something that's not the equivalent of buying friends. Giving away stuff makes no friends.
You start a margin trading scam.
You bait people into joining you on a lowsec roam and then kill them.
You offer people a free ship. All they have to do is surround it in their pods. When they are close enough, you light smartbombs.
You post on the forums a lot and convince all the morons that the person you portrait is in fact the person behind the screen.
You prostitute yourself for ISK.
You create creative art, like sexy pics of avatars, and offer them as wallpapers.
You go to lowsec, let yourself get killed. You contact your killer, ask what happened, tell them you're a noob and they will most likely give you money or offer you to join. Then half a year later you kill one of them in their most expensive ships.
The possibilities are endless. Generic gameplay is not what the game is about. In fact, all those who only play the generic crap drop out after a few months.
The socially interactive part is what makes this game.
I'm Sol ... trust me, I know. ;)

Like I said... it takes time to wrap your head around even a fraction of it. Hell... I have been playing for 6 years now and there are parts of the game even I don't understand (and I'm one of the less ignorant players here).
You are going to make mistakes along the way... cherish those mistakes. They will temper your spirit and mind... which will turn you into something deadly here.
As for the professions/jobs/ways of making money... look at real life for some parallels. If you can offer something that someone else wants (in the context of the game) then you can earn money doing it. Alternatively... if another player has something (i.e. money) you want and you have bigger guns than he/she does... take it from that player. By force or threat of it if necessary (yes, this is legal in the game).
And yeeeeaahhh... you have just stepped into the dystopian Wild West of MMOs.

- if the newbie is in a place where he/she should not be... or doing something he/she should not be doing... all bets are off.

Band of Brothers disbanded by traitor Director: Goonswarm (a horde of people coming from the Somethingawful.com forums) gets a disillusioned Director of the largest and most powerful alliance in the game to disband his own alliance and all their claims in space... then bring him into their fold.
EVE Intergalactic Bank: a guy sets up an honest-to-god in-game bank... with all the bells and whistles and employees. A year later he fulfills every bank manager's dream and leaves with the vault while giving everyone the finger.
No one really gained anything out of this one... but it's funny... Socratic's Fall: guy named Socratic really, really pisses people off by running his mouth while displaying almost no tactical common sense. Some guy gets fed up and sets Socratic up to involuntarily nuke several "innocents" and effectively limit his own ability to operate in some parts of the game.
Also technically not a scam... Hulkageddon: basically there was a contest to see who could blow up the most mining ships in the game. The real deviousness of this came what was happening behind the scenes. Many of the people who funded the rewards were the same people who MAKE the mining barges or have stockpiles asteroids. They literally engineered chaos and destruction to make a profit.
In all these instances: - no one was reimbursed - nothing was returned - the player(s) who committed these acts were not banned - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

EVE is full of the nicest people, whom will go to great lengths to help others, or stab them in the virtual back, or punch them in the virtual face, and possibly all of these. At the end of the day though, it is just a game that shouldn't be taken seriously, and rather just enjoy the roller-coaster ride.
EVE is more about the people, the "meta game" as it is often called, than spaceships. EVE would be a very boring place without player hijinks.
It is important to have the right attitude for EVE. |
