I have always felt that even pod piloted ships had crew. I liked the idea so much that i made a video story about a crew mutiny back in 2011. Sadly i lost the finished movie file.
Months ago CCP had a crew item for use in industry which i thought was really neat. I hope CCP expands on the idea of including ordinary crew as a way to give more depth to the game.
You could easily just add an item or ship slot for crew on ships. You could have different qualities of crew and different costs. Each crew would add just a small amount to the ships performance in some way. It would create a whole new market as well.
So far I am liking the many changes CCP is doing. Sure many of us miss the old EVE but as EVE evolves it just seems to get more interesting.
here is a link to that crew mutiny video for anyone interested in it Crew Mutiny |

Canonically, ships have crews, but they come with the hull and the modules and the cost of hiring wage slaves (or buying literal slaves for Amarr) from planetside is so low in capsuleer terms that the cost of their upkeep and pay can't even be expressed in terms of isk.
That said, if you're proposing a new slot for ship fitting that's a Features and Ideas subforum thing, and this has been brought up before. |

Pretty sure my Fedos ate my crew, then each other.
Probably justified. I think my crew were filthy role playing Romulans who won't be missed.

You could always just have the number from crew guidelines show up on the in game fitting window. So it starts at the minimum then increases as you add fittings. Now crew is a thing! |

Ships have large crews? Interesting. Why ships then need capsuleer to be operational? If I leave my ship to space it should be able to function on its own. Only one man makes difference if ship can function or it cannot. Also other capsuleers can freely take over my ship if I'm not in it and it is floating in space.

Theoretically a capsuleer isn't needed to pilot a ship, and most NPC ships for example are piloted by normal people (baseliners). Capsuleers interface directly with the vessel though, with much better skill and with incredibly fast reflexes a normal 'bridge crew' could only ever dream about, hence why NPCs are most often much easier to kill than another capsuleer.

They do.
Crew is mostly lost with the ship.
Crew also knows the dangers of being on one of our ships. They join up because money is so good compared to planet jobs it is worth the risk.
If any crewman dies POS pilots insurance pays dividends to family of lost crewman. ( There was a story about this some 5+ years ago in EON ) Some crewman found a way to survive in bubbles if air in destroyed ship hulls. Even get rescued on occasion. They would take a new identity and rejoin POD piloted ships in search fro wealth we provide.
POD pilots on the other hand do not see crewman merely as part of the ship. No thought is given to their well being. |

The OP has a point even if it is one we have been through before, I might even have asked the same thing if I can remember. Could be a bit late in the day to start implementing it. Also an area that might be better left vague. If we knew everything there is to know about these ships then they would already exist. |

Thinking about my ship having a crew fills me with glee...
Every time I undock this is how I picture it on the inside of my ship; Cyborg Girl is strutting through the corridors as she inspects her crew, a shambling, dirty lot trembling with fear and covered in dirt, sweat and grime from the ship's internal workings. The crew is mostly made of slaves, primarily Brutor and Sebestior slaves purchased from Amarr. They look terrified and scramble to hide in corners, their legs and arms shackled to the bulkheads and pipes making metal clanging noises as Cyborg slowly walks past each one, whip in one hand and an electro-baton in the other. The ship's mostly automated, so the slave-crew is mostly redundant and there for Cyborg's sadistic personal pleasures during her travels. Their dirty rags for clothes serves them as blankets, bandages and clothes all at the same time.
One of them tugs on Cyborg's pant-leg as she walks by with puts his dirty hand up, palm facing up in a gesture for more food rations. Cyborg quickly turns around, sees him, and proceeds to savagely beat, whip and electrocute Slave #23 until he is unconscious. Cyborg snaps at two more of her slaves and commands them to bring #23 to the medical bay that has been modified into a torture chamber.
Yeah...life on my ship is great!!
