Hello Fellow Space Adventurers
When I play EVE online, when I Make Active an autocannon equipped hurricane, I feel like an unstoppable beast, ready to rain justice against my foes
But this post is not about those feelings
No, for I do not feel like a bear-warrior, mad with wild fury, but a bear stricken by inner turmoil - by its own feelings
Recently through means I will not disclose I waited for a target to strike in an act of piracy
At last the moment arrived, and as I launched the fatal strike with adrenaline beating through my veins, I felt triumph as the ship exploded
Fun and gratifying as always, I felt great - my mission was a success
My target, like those before it, was nothing to me but a hauler that had until recently been flying through space with valuable cargo
It is true that just before I fired, the Green shade on my overview told me the hauler was a fellow corp member, a fellow Brutor, and this gave me pause: a mistake that could have doomed my attack, if I had not quickly wiped it from mind and fired
I saw Corp chat blinking later, after I had recovered from my ambush, and the player was asking how a fellow corp member could have destroyed his ship in safe space
Suddenly, other feelings slowly made their way into my previous feeling of triumph
I felt like I was driving a vehicle made of pure glory at 100 MPH, so happy was I with my attack
But upon seeing this player type, it felt like a rock had kicked up and dented my windshield; what was once pure, was now imperfect, and while small nicks can be ignored, the cracks were quickly spreading
NPC-corp member or not, for truly it was not the thought of him being a fellow brutor that troubled me, but the thought of him as a real person, playing EVE
Would he Log off, sad, as if he had been punched in the feelings? Would he go to sleep feeling hurt? Did I destroy all or most of what he had ingame? Would he quit EVE?
He wrote that he had lots ships in high-sec before, and did not understand why. I thought, if I wasn't the one to send him out, surely another person would in due time?
I felt that did not excuse my actions, and I even considered reimbursing him for his loss.
No, I thought. I am a pirate, in a space game.
Or am I? What are these feelings I am feeling?
There may have been a time when I was younger and less mature when I would have had only a hearty laugh at the thought of seizing plunder from another player. I am unsure if this change is for the better, or not.
I soon planned on battling in 0.0 space, but will I be comfortable there? The players may be aware of the danger they place themselves in, but just as every killmail is a record of victory, so too is it a testament to another player's sadness.
Please advise me, this is serious

Nice post, too bad I can only say it was a nice piece of fiction, what with the "friendly fire" vs NPC corpmates. Or has that changed recently and I completely missed it?
Edit: Nvmd, read like he survived the attack - was obviously a suicide gank. |

Finding the proper balance between having fun and harassing some one is the key. The fact is, NPC corps are just where players who haven't the time or desire to join a player Corp are. And unless you are hunting them down regularly they were just another target nothing more nothing less.
Don't mix real life feelings with space pixles, but don't attack them as a person just as a ship.

The way of the pirate is addictive.
Battling in 00 is also addictive.
Enjoy your time in EvE, shooting other players spaceships, but do recall there is a person behind the screen.

A long time ago i made a pirate alt. I'm naturally a care bear with some claws, but really wanted to try.
I would go to belts ready to shoot someone... until they said hi.. then i just could;t do it.
Quickly realized that i can defend my home space, but piracy is not for me..
sigh

That was a well-written piece, I thought. Here's a Cliff Notes version, with possible questions to expect in the exam:
-The protagonist destroyed the ship of a fellow member of his group. He felt the thrill of winning a victory, but now contemplates the perspective of the victim, and his own role as a betrayer. Discuss. -As a secondary theme, the protagonist considers moving into the lawless area of Null Sec. It is inferred that he would continue to do the same or similar actions there. Possible questions for discussion: If the protagonist shoots a similar victim, who voluntarily put himself in a lawless situation, is the ethical consideration lightened? Discuss. If you shoot your own corpie in Null Sec, is there any possible way you will survive? Are the rules of "It's Just a Game" different as applied to Null Sec and High Sec? Discuss.

There is always the risk to hurt someone's feelings while PvPing. But there are ways to limit this risk : don't attack easy defenceless people. Go to places where most people are here to fight (in theory), like low sec, null sec, worm space. Hunt pirats, gankers, gate campers, null sec colonialists... hunt the evil !

Be the evil. Don't feel bad about it. NPC corps aren't really real corps anyways, so no reason to feel any loyalty to anyone else in them. What matters is that you had fun.
Judging from your post I didn't see any real malice in your act, so it's not like you went out of your way to be hurtful to said player. You just blew up his spaceship in a game that encourages blowing up spaceships. I've had my own haulers kersplatted in the past as well and it did kind of tick me off. I wasn't peeved at the ones who exploded me so much as myself for taking a foolish risk and suffering the consequences. It's just the game.
That feeling of pure awesome? Hold on to THAT. It's a big step in the right direction for evolving your mindset from prey to predator. Again and again, and eventually when you enter a dark scary place you become the boogeyman that stalks in the night rather than the guy looking under his bunk for him in fear.

I joined a corp that happened to be wardecced when I was a newbie, packed up all my belongings into a catalyst and flew off to wherever they were living. Marmite blew up my catalyst and a few jumps later I landed on top of holysheets phobos and lost my pod trying to jump a gate.
I was kind of upset.
Honestly I feel bad when I do bad things to people in game who don't deserve it, but if you **** me off be sure to not put yourself into any ... Exploitable situations.
Last guy I actually got my hands on was first a grief target in an ice belt. Guy made a few fights I learned from, nearly took a buffer arbitrator down with a tristan lulz. Anyways he was russian and wouldn't use his killright on me, not till he got a drake on my barge in a belt. I was already ejected and on my way to grab a fighting ship once he grabbed it.
I didn't get back in time to kill the guy, no worries though. He lost his mackinaw to a talos afterwords. Even if I started the whole sherade ( I dunno how to spell it).
If you're a **** I will try to kill you but usually I feel bad when I kill a newbie or some innocent just minding his own in highsec, hell even lowsec sometimes I feel bad. Which is why I don't pvp often and also why I suck so much at it.

Most likely because of the c64, but it looks much better as well ! Who in hell had the idea to change it anyway ?

Say what you want...what should be or shouldn't be or what people feel and ought not to feel because it's "just a game"...
I can't help but wonder how much RW violence, mail terrorism or thoughts of suicide have been wrangled up in people over the years due to this game. Spending years in voice comms and seeing all the things I've seen in eve nothing would surprise me. One doesn't hear the angry screams of a person driven to madness and ragequits as their profane voice is often deafened on the forums.
Would love to see a V.I.C.E. documentary on the subject some day.
Do your actions have a profound effect on the lives of other players?(people).
Yes absolutely. We love Eve because it's a virtual reality that has tentacles that reach into the real world and has profound implications for a mere videogame. |

And in the same breath we also each bear the onus of determining how much we allow the game to affect us in real life. Certainly things in game can affect us emotionally, but that stands true for nearly any form of entertainment that's very immersive.
People flip out over things happening on their favorite shows all the time, and I can't count how many times I've been left frothing in fury when mishap struck in any number of single player games in the past.
While it can reach you it is still just a game. If it starts striking too deeply then it's time to take a step back and gain some perspective.
Come hell or high water, this sick world will know I was here.
