Although I am slightly concerned. This next generation of gamers are not the same open minded, free thinking individuals that we were. They like mission indicators and maps that tell you exactly where to go and what to do. They like to get rich fast and have the best items (In this case ships of course) in the game, without much effort put into it. Some would even argue that in REAL life, their outlook is the same.
When they come to eve, they will get utterly beaten down. Some will stay and prevail and most won't, that's how it's always been. The best part about EvE, is that the players who stay are part of the most loyal player-base that I've ever seen and as long as this player-base stays interested and has something to achieve and look forward to, the game won't ever die. It's when there is nothing more to achieve, when all ships are flown to the maximum potential, and all objectives of the game have been tried....when that player gets burnt out on pvping....that is when that player will go for good.
If CCP can keep the loyal base interested, they will succeed!
Diablo II was a game where anyone could jump into a room and kill someone regardless of where they were, save town. An unfortunate majority complained constantly about this. Diablo III came out, and no such pvp system was introduced, which turned me off that game completely, and many argued that it was for the best. The freedom of combat against other players seems to be a requirement for a good game, in my opinion. Anything less, and you may as well play a single player game. That's how I see Diablo III. Boring. That's why games like EvE and Elite Dangerous are for players who love freedom of choice. Even if it includes making bad choices!

Surely numbers (of players online) have dropped from top (late 2010-early 2011) that you refer (and time) at this post.
Yeah sure multiple character skilling could have removed some of "no longer needed" accounts, but it does not explain all of that steady decline.
But no worries, still not blowing doomsday trumpet here, EvE were its first years even smaller niche game, so I-¦m sure they can adjust their operational costs to pretty much any number of paying customers if need to (and they want to).

There are loads of other games that cater to those that want immediate self gratification. EVE is too far behind to try grab that bunch and would die trying.
We need to point out that EVE takes a more mature mind and tell the kids to stop splashing around in one pond after another when there is an ocean to dive into.

I miss Amiga and Atari, wish they release those again, just with a DVD for all their games (that come with it ofc).
Good business hint for somebody,

With the changes to the skill Q the online numbers are no longer a good indicator of how well eve is doing, however having said that the fact that CCP is now not showing their finance details (I know they no longer have to, but they know full well the eve player base checks these, so can only conclude it is more negative than positive otherwise the eve financiers being happy with it can't be bad for self perpetuating advertisement) scares me.
Eve has alot resting on Valkyrie, given the footage alot of work must have gone into it, where there is alot of work there is alot of cash and well, we say how WoD went!
CCP need to invest some RL isk on advertising, does not have to be an ad in the middle of the world cup or superbowl etc, but some TV adds in between reruns of star trek, wars, star gate and the billion other sci fi shows people would not go amiss. I know after 12 years I will be personally pissed off if eve were to die over poor plans for expansion (or the very least self sustaining)

Actually, what people used to do, log in for short time to set new skill queue, it should not really show in http://eve-offline.net/?server=tranquility averages, as i understand it, because that average is also from time spent logged (so each player playing for an hour would counter 30 or 20 skill loggers that hour).
However, if your point were that setting skills used to keep people logging in, you might have a point there (that were also CCP-¦s reason and point for short skill queues until recently). When they logged in to set skills, they stayed for longer time, even for just something trivial like a chat.
Did CCP then succeed with that change, as players certainly are happy, but dropping numbers give bad image in overall (to both players and possible financiers even)? Very mind blowing if you really start to think about it

Very mind blowing if you really start to think about it There's no point publishing FinStats to an audience who can't read them (but think they can) and use them to pursue ingame agendas and attack the company. I've bumped into 3 accountants ingame, and one did a detailed review a few years back in the MD forums which more or less boiled down to 'stop yapping, dickheads.' The thing we're not seeing is the amount of revenue gained from Plex/GTC sales vs subs - and tbh I don't think that should ever be made public, because it looks to be a really significant chunk of revenue. Which is questionable in all sorts of ways I'd rather not get into.
Anyway, on topic: nope. I don't think Ultima Online died either. If anything it's been idealised after the fact, and there's evidence the original EvE designers were heavily influenced by UO. If CCP crashed and burned either a core of devs would split off to form a project in the same vein (I think this happened a while back with Perpetuum) or the playerbase itself would mass migrate to other games. Either way you'll probably see people announcing they are ex-EvE players in other games in 20 years, even if they did nothing but grind.
*not impressed that the person I'm quoting has his surname blocked by the forums. ****** was executed many years ago, but his surname is shared by millions of people. Blocking that name is excessive moderation and verging upon political and cultural censorship. I'm betting Mugabe, Amin, Pinochet and Stalin aren't censored, and it'd be laughable to censor Bush or Churchill. If you're going to scratch out who you think is offensive from public view CCP, you better be ready to add a few to that list. Especially after the outrage from you when someone defaced your phallic monument by censoring a name.

But really, censoring names because of their political context on a gaming forum is absurd. Whoever implemented that is a fascist and and an imbecile and I'll gladly eat a forum ban pointing it out.
