Edited by: Paddlefoot Aeon on 14/11/2006 17:13:53 Remembrance Day here in Canada is when we remember and honour those heros who gave their lives for their country, starting in WW1 and including such conflicts as WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Balkins, Iraq and Iraq2.
No debate is had on whether the conflicts were justified, and no blame is laid. Even though Canada fought against Germany, I bow my head and remember those young German soldiers along side our Canadian boys. The day is inteneded to remember all those lost, because German/American/Canadian/Iraqi/Korean, all those that died were someone's child, sibling, spouse or friend.
Regardless of the cause, it takes courage to wear your country's colours and go to war, risking your life for others. It is that sacrifice that is remembered, not the politics behind a particular conflict.
Closing this thread was inappropriate, because there is no political statement being made, and no one-sided view being expressed. I am not a member of the armed forces, but I have a deep respect for what they do, and what they have sacrificed in the past.
If closing that thread violates the posting rules on political commentary, then I expect you to lock every single thread that wishes people "Merry Christmas" of "Happy Chanukah", because these threads touch on religion.
I know we aren't supposed to discuss bans or reasons why threads were locked/deleted, but I feel that ISD erred, and owes an apology to all those in the EVE community that are in the armed forces, regardless of nationality.
When the armistice was signed and came into effect on November 11, 1918, people were relieved that the war was over, and looked back in horror at the sheer number of lives lost ON BOTH SIDES. Remembrance/Armistice day serves as a reminder of how terrible war is, and how we should learn from the past and think twice before going through this kind of hell again in the future...
It is not a political statement... but a statement on UNIVERSAL human decency.

Hello everyone, please let me explain.
I've already responded to a mail regarding this subject and I would indeed prefer that you guys would mail us! If you don't give us a chance to explain ourselves, it's not fair for you to demand anything.
I am very sorry that we were forced to take action against that thread, it's very sad for me that, even now, there sociopaths who ruin this for conscientious people and attempt to spin it into their own agendas.
I can assure you, before I truncated that post, there were a series of posts of a political and flaming nature.
That is strictly against the Forum rules and even worse; it's also completely disrespectful to our honoured dead who gave their lives for all of us.
I've been a member of the EVE On-line community for some time, Every year some one makes a thread about remembrance day and every year it gets derailed by someone.

People tend to get very uptight over matters.
I know I do as my father did the entire length of WWII,

Keep the initial thread alive, delete all the derailing posts...
Doesn't seem that hard...

I appreciate the ISD response, and apologise if my inital post seems overly critical. I ask the EVE community to be constructive when posting further on this thread.

Well the problem is that such threads get too many bad posts, and we can't just baby sit a thread. ___

For a soldier there is no politics.
"Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do or die."
And because of this, war survivors even sometimes share a certain commradery with soldiers of other countries that may have once shot at them or killed thier friends. Nations are enemies but opposing soldiers are advisaries. The difference is the grudge and the respect. But no matter which side a soldier is on, or what their civilian leaders ask of them, behind the soldier is an individual with a family and friends and a life. That should be respected, especially when they make a sacrifice none of us have been asked to make.
There should be no politics on days of rememberance.
But I support the moderator's decision to lock a thread if there are certain children ruining something that should be good. The moderators here are excellent at policing signatures. |

Ia gree with your statement, however us and the mods are all a victim to the society we live in.
I understand the decision made to lock the topic, unfortunate as it was, I believe that to be a better decision rather than to have it and its meaning derailed.

As was pointed out previously we are volunteers and we spend out personal time trying to keep this forum clean for all users, if you feel you could do a better job then by all means apply here, we do all we can to keep threads clean but there are only so many of us on at any one time and monitoring 1 thread constantly just means other threads get flamed and derailed. ---

Most fora are not appropriate places to talk about serious things like this, but the juvenile flamefest that is the Eve-O fora (some of the time at least) is certainly not.
A thread like that is obviously going to remain intact for about 30 seconds on here, so no point in posting it, and a weird place to choose to remember such events/places/people anyway. ----------

I'll gladly shut the hell up in this thread, but I still don't support those ideas.
However I must agree, with people like me around, it'll always turn into a flamewar and, seriously, the GMs actually do stuff... Sig removed does not contain your name, email [email protected] if you have any questions - Xorus |
