Over the years the visuals in Eve has improved a lot to the extent that it still looks like half good GFX in 2015. However the UI is atrocious. It is old and outdated and no tweaking is going to help. Please replace it with something like what is in the Valkyrie demo please so we can keep playing the game without having to turn of the ugly UI from time to time to see how beautiful New Eden is.
Thanks :) |

A lot of players have been here long enough that, if you drastically changed the way it worked, we'd probably stop playing altogether. I know if you made EvE a twitch game, like Valkyrie is going to be, that my four accounts would be gone. I play EvE specifically because it is not a twitch game.
EvE is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.
I couldn't have said it better.

What are you talking about? I am just talking about how the UI looks. No gameplay changes. |

How about some concrete ideas rather than just the usual whine about poor UI that we usually get. Set this thread apart from all the rest.

I am not a UI designer but if you look at any modern game you will see much better looking UI's. Asking me how to improve them would be like asking me to design 3D models, something I know very little about.
All I am saying is that they should spend some more effort modernizing the UI to look like something that would be released today rather than 10 years ago. |

The answer is simple, allow us to upload our own custom UI. Why can CCP not do that? Its been asked for numerous times over the ears. |

I don't know about you, but the thought of trying to manage flying a logi in anything other than a two man roam with the valkyrie style UI scares me.
The EVE UI gives one hell of a lot of information, all things we need. It'd be hard to display that in an easy to read format without it looking bsically the same as what we have, but with rounded corners. |

You need to propose some specific improvements. Otherwise this is just a rant.

i agree with the OP Shin Katsumoto the UI is ugly and hides the beauty of this game. however i also agree with Iain Cariaba and FT Diomedes the UI is functional and we are all used to it so i do propose some small things that should be easy to accomplish ie changes/options.
first some relevant background about me. not a ui designer but a ex TV editor and camera man. in my working life it took me ages to not get upset about my beautiful pictures being overlayed with boring but necessary graphics and titles. As an editor during the last half of my career I had to add those graphics and was sympathetic to the pictures below in the layout as much as i could given client demands.
In the game though it should be fairly easy to have a " UI template" option for different situations. when doing PI i layout the ugly boxes to minimize what i don't need and place what i want to work with away from center screen so i can access the planets infrastructure , customs office and cargo bay sometimes a market window as well.
Doing station trading the cargo, station items and market / contact windows dominate the screen.
PVP solo and fleet or Missioning has another arangement, tall local, short corp chat boxes etc, exploration and Mining also have specific arrangements
so...1. would not it be great to save these layouts as we like and hit a button somewhere to bring up the arrangement as we like when we like with a one button click? My suggestion then is a user made, individual, saveable, perhaps shareable "template" for any situation you like.
2. next step would be to remove the ugly boxes altogether and have a more spaceship control room like foreground, the champion artists at ccp have done so spectacularly well with the backgrounds and lighting effects, skins and everything else perhaps a look at the foreground would be timely.
just my 2 cents, end rave. fly deadly! |

For specific changes:
Change the overview to give an visual overview rather than an ugly table with numbers. For example, zoom out and turn on the tactical overview. That is how an overview should look like, to give you a quick overview of the battle. The current one with listed numbers and icons with no visual indication of where they are is rubbish. It is like dumping a bunch of data and expect you to yourself figure out their relative location.
The shield/armor/structure "thing". It is informative but ugly as hell. Maybe add some shading and spice it up a bit to make it look like something from a futuristic space ship rather than something from an old video game.
The target reticule and icon which is found on targetted ship is ugly and hides the beauty of the actual ship. I am not going to go into details but there are basically million ways that this can be improved to look better. Including adding damage indicators on the reticule rather than having to look at that ugly target icons. Which leads me to:
Target icons are ugly. A 2D low res image that barely resembles the actual ship. Replace it it 3D models, preferably a live view of what the actual ship looks like, including it being hit by your weapons. That way you don't have to zoom into the ship to see what it looks like and see your weapons actually hit something rather than reading a text saying that it did XX damage. Damage indicators should be replaced with a miniature, improved version of the one described above as shield/armor/structure "thing".
Module/Weapon icons. They are ugly and need to be modernized to something that looks like it was released today rather than 10 years ago. Also the overheat "button" is terrible and many times you accidently activate/deactivate the module rather than overheating. Yes you can do it using a keymap but why then even have the option to click on a narrow string on the module.
The PI icons are ugly. Get rid of them and use the 3D models which are currently being used as a big, annoying, spinning thing which blocks your view. Make it smaller, the size of the icons, and get rid of the ugly icons completely.
I could go on and on but a proffesional game UI designer, which has been involved in a modern game, would be able to design a UI 100 times better than what we have now. So why aren't CCP hiring one? |

Good suggestions all around. Specially the spaceship control room and UI templates. |

Let me just stop you right there.
How the hell do you propose anyone actually shoot anything with a system like this? How do I lock the enemy battleship I want to shoot instead of a blue tackle frigate, fifty drones, a random dictor, or any of the other things that happen to be on grid with my target?
How do I lock a tackle frigate doing 6km/s through a blob of friendly domis if I cannot click it's entry in my overview?
How the hell do I lock anything, at all, ever, in a large fight? |

Funny thing, this is exactly why the Overview was added in the first place. Way back in the past, there was no Overview, instead there was this little spherical radar in the corner of the screen: (Image). Turns out it's a huge pain to pick out one tiny thing from a million other tiny things in space like that! |
