I have enough isk now to fit a noctis with a cloak and so on. What I want to do is make money by doing dangerous stuff like flying in nullsec or lowsec and salvaging player's wrecks after fights. Is this good with a Noctis, ro what is a Noctis useful for most? |

A noctis can salvage, and it can do so really well.
However it is a big, slow, completely defenseless and slightly pricy ship. The moment you're spotted, people will start hunting you for an easy kill. I would not use it for ninja salvaging in null sec. Better would be to slap a lot of salvagers on a destroyer or a frigate. I believe the exploration frigs still have a salvage bonus. |

Scan down wrecks around HS mission hubs and ransack peoples sites. If done right can make a decent amount of isk, and if you are up for PVP you can see if someone will shoot at you, tank the thing enough to survive a alpha from a BS, warp out, and come back in a PVP fit ship to try and get a juicy bear kill. |

Don't use a noctis for that as the tractor beams are useless: you can't use them on wrecks that you don't own. |

The Noctis is best used for salvaging your own wrecks in a situation where you are comparatively safe, or have warning of trouble coming. For something that moves faster than an arthritic slug (and is cheap to replace) try something like this:
[Catalyst, Salvager] Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Salvager I Salvager I Salvager I Salvager I
1MN Microwarpdrive I Cap Recharger I
Capacitor Power Relay I Capacitor Power Relay I Co-Processor I
Small Salvage Tackle I Small Salvage Tackle I Small Salvage Tackle I

If you want the ability to hide up you can replace one of the high slots with a cloak.

Mobile tractor units have, IMO, made noctis obsolete. At the start of the mission, drop a MTU, at the end with a dessy and 7 salvagers, savlage!. Done.
For anything hostile noctis just doesn't have enough tank or agility.

Well fun is also good.

I trained for Salvage V and used to get my alt to mop up wrecks, it was very fast and profitable. Mobile tractor units are great if they've been put down early but if not then you're sitting waiting. If memory serves the small tractor beam was quicker but had shorter range (only tried tech I). |

How do you scan down wrecks?

If you want to salvage in "hostile places" then you should get a Venture.
Fit the highs with two salvagers and a tractor beam... the mids with an Afterburner, shield extender, and invulnerability field (s for shield resistances)... and the low with either a warp core stabilizer or damage control.
Just run around salvaging what you can and warp away when in danger.

Nah man, MTU can't keep up with a marauder for ****. I'll have run another mission by the time it's done with the first room let alone the second.
It'd be WAY faster to go get the noctis

You don't, you scan down the player or his drones sitting next to the wrecks. |

This. They have longer range and pull all loot into one container at the same time. Superior to noctis and cheaper to lose. Come back with cheap frigate salvager after a mission over = better than bringing a noctis. All the wrecks should be pulled in by then. |

A Venture is quite good that activity and relatively cheap to replace.

Personally I would disagree. If there is any range involved an MTU is really slow whereas a Noctis is really fast. I would use an MTU initially but once the fighting has ended switch to the Noctis and swoop the remainder up really fast.

Ninja-salvaging in null you don't own is best done in a Cov Ops Frig or T1 Scanner Frigate (Heron, Probe, etc...).
For hi-sec, the Noctis is a beast. Your best bet is simply posting in local in a few systems where there are multiple L4 agents nearby. Many missions runners don't loot/salvage. Just ask if anyone is leaving stuff behind and warp to them - you can slurp up the loot salvage as they go through the site. |
