A while back, I believe either fanfest 14 or 13, the art panel discussed how they were developing a way to reduce the impact of multiple bubbles, by merging the interiors and only displaying the surface of the collective bubble blob.
Has there been any headway on this? Don't know where else to ask. Maybe some players have heard or seen something and can point me there?
Thanks in advance |

Metaballs were brought up in the Art & Gfx panel in FF2014
Other things in this presentation were apparel they did deliver, also a ship pattern customization UI for player that is a far future concept..

Metaballs. Last time I heard that one was in the 80s.

It is always a /facepalm moment when people you work with tell you they weren't even born yet.
Meatballs was released in 1979. That's 36 years ago. |

metaballs are still fairly CPU intensive.

Well fun is also good.

I have implemented them. They are not trivial since you end up calculating an isosurface from a set of potentials (more accuratly its a implicit surface of the form f(x,y,z)=constant). Also this would *not* match a set of spheres either. Doing a set of spheres while removing the inside surfaces is also not that easy. In fact in all cases, it may well be fast on the GPU, as in just render it. They are bloody fast these days.

You went with the original approach instead of doing optimizations? I just did a quick google. There seems to be a never ending fountain of tutorials about them out there.

Which is not the same as they don't have a non trivial CPU overhead. In a real time game where a 100ms lag not good.
Really did you read those papers? You know i wrote one of em and review a few :D.
And yet it still may well be a win to just let the GPU do it. As in that is faster anyway.

Beyond that it's a consideration of aesthetic. I think it would be worth it (RIP screen whiteout). |

I can't imagine this would create performance problems. And its all client side.
how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

I can't imagine this would create performance problems. And its all client side. This is all true with a small enough number of bubbles. However we are probably only looking to "fix" performance when there are many many bubbles, often when we are loading the grid. Also note that if they don't overlap it doesn't help anyway, like in a big fight.
The real problem with optimising things like this, is that the correct answer is always "it depends". It depends on the players computer and GPU. It depends on server load and current network lag. It depends on how many are on grid. It depends on everyones graphics settings.
But of course non of these reasons means don't do it. I would be interested in how far it got and why it wasn't put in the game in the end. This is the sort of thing i would like to see get dev time. Not effing WiS!
