Funny that you didn't clarify then You quoted the wrong person? I tried pointing out that you are not helping yourself by being ignorant of what other people say. I have no personal opinion on the matter. I can adjust my character's viewpoints accordingly. Pixie, for example, is no fan of it at all and would abuse the features to exploit players, while Luxy would love to have a more personal way to approach others. I have picked role-players from the forums as role models for them. If you want clarification, ask the one who brought them up. If I am ignorant of what people say, its because they never said it in the first place. Hence my comment. I didn't quote the wrong person I was quoting you for a reason. You shouldn't be ignorant of that reason so I will clarify. The reason I quoted you was because you said it was easy to understand the points so it was rather funny that you didn't even say what they were. I don't roleplay I am a human at a computer with a viewpoint which I am expressing via this forum post.

I have added something relevant to the discussion by saying its still worth CCP working on. Yes in the current form of eve with 1 sec server ticks. This would be unbearable with First person interactions. Other interactions and stuff are harder as well. Since local geometry is more important and typically a bigger server burden.
Don't get me wrong. It could be done. But dam if WoW started using phasing to fix their performance issues when they make *billions*, i think it pays not to underestimated the difficulty of the task for a company much smaller than Blizzard.

*reads thread about WiS*
*checks for the usual trolls, trolling as usual*
*sighs*
It's been 8 years since the original plans for Ambulation.
It's about to be 4 years since Incarnageddon.
WiS was the future. Now EVE no longer haves a future, rather a ongoing present attempting to replay the past with Apochrypha 2.0 (New zero security space. And this time you're meant to colonize it. It worked in 2009, so why take any chances?)
All pros and cons of WiS have been said many times. So I'll try to summarize it in a single sentence:
EVE with WiS would be a different EVE, and CCP is no longer attempting that.
73% of EVE characters stay in high security space. 62% of EVE subscribers barely PvP. 40% of all new accounts just "level up their Ravens". Probably that's why PvE content in EVE Online is sub-par and CCP is head over heels for PvP...

Did they say it was due to technical limitations? I don't recall reading that. It happened and was awesome, but they threw it away. Then they did it again. And againGǪ They kept increasing or altering the scope to just beyond what they were capable of delivering on a performance and gameplay standpoint until they had lost all the money invested and could no longer rely on their main source of income to maintain it. Technical limitations were part of it; money was part of it; and good-will was part of it.
Funnily[?] enough, the first public demo in 2008 was probably their best bet and seemed to deliver what most people wanted (most notably multi-avatar interaction), except for one thing: it didn't have the flash CCP required for WoD. Had they stuck with that, we would have had full WiS with ageing graphics (that might be worth upgrading) now, rather than a tech-demo with ageing graphics and no value or redeeming qualities to warrant an upgrade.
These days, the technical limitations may be ever so slightly behind us, but instead the building blocks have become old and crusty and not all that good a foundation for anything any more. This means they have to lower their aim, re-build a lot from scratch (again), and yet somehow convince a slowly dwindling community that this time it'll work, if people suspend their wish for constant improvement just one more timeGǪ

Was interaction between several players in the same room available at any point? I was AFK then.

The rest, as you say, can be done with some intelligent form of instancing (which matters less in the type of environment WiS was supposed to offer, as opposed to open space).
Later peeks at WoD suggested that they might have overcome that, but by then it was too late.

For me WiS is something I could take or leave, I play other games that allow for 'walking around' (SWTOR, Star Trek Online) and it's no big deal, no great thing either. I can walk in real life, what I can't do in real life is fly a faster than life space ship, and one of the best things about EVE for me (and I'll risk speaking for others and say that there are at least a few people like me in EVE) is that it's FOCUSED on what it's about (spaceships), almost in the way that World of Tanks is focused on the Tanks (and yep, what happens here happens to them too lol)
One of the biggest reason for such staunch resistance to WiS stuff isn't just the past, it's the concepts fans.
As has been said in this thread, this issue comes up like the Elvis and Tupac sightings every few weeks/months and the WiS concept's sycophantic followers come out of the wood work, still failing to understand that their activism turns of many a potential supporter.. Hell, in the last big WiS discussion, people were talking about having 'hanger briefings (like this is Wing Commander lol) or simply sitting in a station watching a sun set or moon rise...
The WiS community being slightly less looney would go a long way towards building a community consensus on the issue.

It has not worked. CCP needs some balance here. WiS is an incomplete, broken feature. Just like all other incomplete, broken features, it needs to be fixed and completed in parallel with the other work.
Oddly, the last WiS related thread was titled "drinking in stations". It was a fairly popular thread, with quite a bit of support. I think we need "Drinking and gambling in stations." It would not allow you to shoot other players, but it would be funny to see someone gamble away their Titian.

WiS could add gameplay elements that people might use, but not quite how they think.
If ccp was to really redo walking in stations, they need to kill incarnia and rebuild ambulation. If you have no idea what ambulation was, try and find the presentation from fan fest 2007.
But for now, wis is dead, untill space gets stable, because lets face it, it will never be fixed.
I still want ccp to do the 2014 vision, and combine all games into one platform, with easy of switching between them, to compete with other games that are coming. and no, not just Scam citizen. As i said, ccp needs to make the eve player care, becuase if we do, even a ****** ccp game could succeed.

I don't know why people stick on this, but I would surmise that these were the same people who believed that "EVE Online has 500,000 "players" when CCP kept saying that in 2012.
No one outside of CCP know how many real people play (and even they might not know), 'concurrent user count" doesn't count users it count logged on accounts, and CCP made a whole bunch of changes that made Alts less necessary (like multiple character training) and less useful (jump fatigue nerfing individual player independence making cyno alts redundant). Add to that people shedding accounts as PLEX rise and you get a picture that CCPs old statement of "2.2 alts per player" probably decreased.
For all anyone outside of CCP knows, the amount of 'real players' of EVE online could have gone up (probably hasn't), but the fact is we don't and can't know, concurrent user count tells us very little. |

For all anyone outside of CCP knows, the amount of 'real players' of EVE online could have gone up (probably hasn't), but the fact is we don't and can't know, concurrent user count tells us very little.
about all we know form someone who did an artical is ccp did shead some money last year, there rev was down i think 5m for the year or soemthing

Chribba's eve-offline.net is useless, might as well turn it off. |
