I tried out salvaging in 00 and here are my thoughts:
I found it EXTREMELY annoying that to use a salvager the wrecks had to be looted... Looting every wreck takes up a LOT of cargo space (and extra time), ESPECIALLY when you take into consideration that you get 0-2 random components per salvage job (and that you dont always WANT every thing that drops, and jettisoning cargo every 5 minutes is REALLY annoying). Also, I have no idea why the salvage mod is chance based, as opposed to just having the skill reduce the activation time on the module it increases the chance of succeeding (which DOES NOT guarentee a component). Lastly each salvage job takes several minutes per spawn cluster and gains very few components, of which it takes about 140 components to build any given rig. This means hours and hours and hours of salvaging.
Anyways, it is hard to say what the prices of rigs will be, but the way things are right now with salvaging, they will have to be much more expensive then the ships they are going to go on, and I just dont see salvaging as a viable means of income.
I just wanted to post my salvage mini profession blog, it really doesnt matter to me if this get changed at all since it is a new feature, and if I think its a waist of time, I will just buy the components from noobs and build rigs without the salvaging component (just like buying mins for production) as is, I dont think salavaging is really worth it otherwise.

Really my biggest peve is that you have to loot first. I dont think salvaging is going to be a "gold mine." But it is REALLY inconvienent to loot everything you shoot (especially in 00) my point is that it really isnt worthwhile to persue this proffession as I make a LOT more isk NOT salvaging. Plus to build a rig requires enough components to fill about 140m3 of cargo space of parts, I think the components should be smaller, or repairable, maybe have a skill like refining where off of RAW damaged armor plates, perhaps you can get several working subsystems AFTER salvaging?
I dont know, the system just doesnt feel complete to me....

/signed , yea i have to agree this is real annyoing im more of a miner anyway, I was testing it but this is taking too much time, some of the stuff is junk and feels like im runnin tru a dumpster and im making a jettison collection since it takes so much space might as well have a Salvage crew, with PVp escort lol.

Two points: 1) buyng from noobs - I dubt it, salvaging requires Mechanic 5 and Survey 5, not exactly noobs skills, even with the new start at 800K; 2) apparently using more than 1 salvager on the same wreck increase the chance of a salvaged item (for the ones that haven't tried it, somethime a successful salvage give 0 items);
Yes it is long and use a high slot.
A random thought: someone has ever tried refining the salvage? something useful?
