Azda Ja wrote: While I'm sure some people would be crushed because of their SP, I think the bigger reason is that Tranquility has been the stage our great space drama has unfolded on for the last decade, there's history everywhere you look. I live in Genesis, which once upon a time was home to THE trade hub in New Eden, Yulai. Due to some gates being removed/rerouted (I think? don't remember the exact change) trade ended up shifting to Jita, which became even more monstrous than it's predecessor.
Providence is well known for being one of the few (only?) parts of nullsec that operate under NRDS (Not Red Don't Shoot) instead of the more common NBSI (Not Blue Shoot It), that's all to do with the people that live there, and have lived there for a long time.
Or how about Amamake? When I started last year it was full to the brim with Pandemic Legion, they even have a Statue in orbit somewhere, then they up and left after quite a few years there.
Just 3 examples off the top of my head. Even in 1 year New Eden has changed, but it's 'organic' change due to the ebb and flow of super serious space politics, not because a Dev pressed a reset button.
That's why people say reseting EVE would kill it, one of the big selling points is that what you do in New Eden matters and has influence, big or small, on the future of the game world.
Listing reasons why NO is as meaningful as listing reasons why YES. Examples - New server means influx of new players (it is a great PR), bigger game activity (at least at start), and of course new drama. It is up to the reader to give more/less weight to these arguments. Its purely subjective.
New server also doesn't mean resetting the old one. |

I have read (somewhere, I cant find the source) that CCCP plans to start a new, fresh server in the future. Is this true? Are there any official info sources?
Thank you!
those silly soviets, don't they know the soviet union doesn't exist anymore?

Sure, but in this case, "Why bother?" is a more important question that "Why not?" Just like when making suggestions for new features, you have to show us why it's a good idea. The answers in the No column so far carry far more weight. While perhaps there would be more new players (which we can't be sure of TBH given EVE's high turnover rate) they would in no way be 'on an even footing', people who played on Tranquility would be so far ahead of true new players in terms of know how, the illusion of starting from scratch, or being on the same level is just that, an illusion. The vets would still come out on top because they understand the game and it's mechanics.
Bigger game activity is also not a given. The only way that's guaranteed is if your previous statement turns out to be true. Who's to say all the vets from Tranquility would keep playing if the population was suddenly cut in half? Would they even move to the new server?
I doubt there would be much new drama, in fact I think there would be less of it. All the large, established groups would have an even bigger advantage since they already have the 'social infrastructure' to hit the ground running on the new server. They'd leave any new, small groups in the dust in a huge way, far more quickly than on the original server. Most of these large groups were, surprise surprise, much smaller when they began, and their competition was too. Granted, there may be exceptions tat could potentially break through, but let's be real here, the only drama on server 2.0 would be the same drama from the same groups, in an identical, yet eerily different theater.
The player created history of the EVE universe in incredibly important to the health of the game. The fact that EVE is a niche product with a fairly limited audience (compared to other online games), further entrenches this fact. Splitting the EVE population, or wiping the slate clean would kill/severely cripple the game.

Actually, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, "us" thinking it's a "good idea" doesn't carry as much weight as "we" like to think. CCP did make the mistake of knuckling under to the obnoxiously loud minority ONCE, so I can see how the eager amongst us might think their ill-considered and experienceless notions might be taken seriously. (Then they can brag at the cool kids table "they" made EVE DO something!)
However, I think CCP may be aware "we" are also the ones that think chugging a bottle of skAtch before we log, then playing while balancing a cat on one knee and an ashtray with a hooter in it on the other is "a good idea" as well.

Posting in a thread that has run its course - because someone mentioned kittens.
