Hey Hey Capsuleers. My Alienware laptop (Mx11 R3) finally gave way after 4 years. It has been an intensive 4 years and I ripped the shreds out of it was gaming so I'm not disappointed. I naturally leaned towards alienware again but wanted a desktop. Having a look at the prices etc I decided to build my own. Heres the rig that I've come up with. I can amend the order for the next 3 days. If my amendment is cheaper they'll refund the difference and vice versa I need to pay the balance if its more expensive before they dispatch.

Cpu is overkill maybe
Ram is low
Gpu is meh.
I would swap some cash from CPU to GPU. |

I agree that the CPU is seriously overkill unless you really need it. An i7 4790k or i5 4690k would be fine. I would also suggest a 256GB+ SSD in addition to the mechanical drive.

For GPU any non reference 970 gtx (oc) overclock edition will keep you on the high end of things.
Ram just add another stick of the same down the road.
I would make sure mobo support SLI as well. |

Yeah Mobo supports SLI
"Multi-GPU support
With support for both NVIDIA-« SLIGäó and AMD CrossFireXGäó 2/3-WAY configurations, the X99 motherboard enables multi-GPU setups so you can harness the full power of the latest graphics technologies to drive games at 4K and beyond."
16gb seemed excessive in terms of ram. I currently only have 2gb and it appeared to do the trick. I'll not really be Playing any latest releases. Only dual boxing eve + playing total war rome II / CIV 5.

The laptop was 250gb and after 4 years only really got to avout 170-175gb
But yes, maybe go for SSD. As for the 2nd storage for pr0n. Cloud. It worked for j-law & colleagues hahaha |

Take a look at my new computer on how i did build it. You can find it here: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=400040
It might give you some ideas on what to use. My computer is a beast though when you take into consideration on how small the computer is .
Here is a list of my current EVE / PVP videos:

2: Clash of the Empires

Yeah, that CPU does not correlate with the GPU. You're spending -ú1000 for a GTX 960.
An i7 isn't necessary for gaming, even a CPU like a i5-2500 still runs games fine. The recommended CPU for gaming on a budget is i5-4460 and you will be running games optimally with that CPU. I use a 4440 and have never experienced any issues with high end games.
For a graphics card, it depends on your monitor setup, but for 1080p, a 970 should run everything high/ultra. I recommend EVGA 970 FTW as it comes with a higher factory clock speed and can be overclocked to compete with a GTX 980, so that is the best value for money in my opinion.
Oh god.

Yeah that's low usage, so most definitely SSD. It really does make a big difference performance wise for a desktop anyway. For a laptop, you can drop your laptop and it will likely still work unlike the chances of dropping one with a mechanical drive in it.
But SSD as primary drive, where you have windows installed for virtual memory access time benefits. Then your fav online games on the SSD, anything you want the best performance out of and where load times are crucial. Note: though for systems simply slaving on an SSD you can configure virtual memory to work on the SSD drive. Also I don't recommend hybrid drives, especially on a laptop... and sadly most are shipped with them now. Mechanical drives imo are a dinosaur, apart from cheap mass storage usage.

... and my advice given in that thread still stands. (Build the right machine and it can last a hell of a long time) 16 GB of memory in 2 slots with 2 slots remaining The processor Then graphics card replacements are pretty stable.

Thanks everyone for their input.
At this stage the only thing I am going to change is adding am extra stick of RAM to bring it up to 16gb for the "just in case"

You may be surprised how quickly you burn through that 8GB of memory, 16 GB at least is certainly the way to go especially if you're multi-tasking (running multiple eve clients, dozens of web browser tabs etc).
I managed to clock 28 GB of RAM in use last week while doing a photo merge in lightroom, it was starting to get a little hairy as I don't have a page file enabled... |

Why are you blocking the flow of air thru the computer by tucking it under desk and even close to a desk walls? I would never do that.

Looks like a computer specced by someone who doesn't really understand the components he's picking out, and hasn't done any real research on the subject. |

I'm to suggestions
Please post your build keeping in my budget and you're rational :) its my first build but judging from the general response from the company forums I bought it from the only feedback was an i7 was overkill an i5 would have done. |
