Just watched a video of this mwd ,cloak trick on youtube and the guy in his video says you must use the "improved cloaking device II" is this correct or not was curious if this can still be done done using the covert ops cloaking device II as well?
thanks

confirmed can be done using cov ops cloak

It's about the velocity you can reach when cloaked. The prototype cloaking device reduces your speed by 90% which (depending on the ship you're using) might not be enough to successfully do this trick. The 75% reduction of the improved cloaking device is good enough for this trick to work. As the covert ops cloaking device doesn't lower your speed at all it's probably the best cloaking device for this. |

There is no might not, it simply will not work if you use a prototype, improved cloak is required. The covops cloak does not require an MWD as you can warp while cloaked so there is no need to waste time with a MWD cycle.

In theory you *can* get a prototype cloak to work...but you need to overheat the MWD
500% (MWD speed bonus) x 1.5 (overheat bonus) x 0.1 (prototype cloak nerf) = 75% of maximum speed
No idea if this works in practice but the numbers work out.
but what would I know, I'm just a salvager

In theory yes, except that you won't get to that 75% by the end of one cycle in most ships. Your skills would have to be maxed and your ships agility would have to be quite high.

This needs a caveat. There is usually no need to employ a MWD + cloak with a covert ops cloaking ship. The exception is when you are in a slow aligning ship with a covert ops cloak (such as a 1600mm plated Recon or T3). In those cases, a good decloaker can get on top of you before you warp. Utilizing a MWD cycle helps make it harder for you to decloak.

with the cov ops cloak you can warp when cloaked thus the mwd cloak trick doesn't make any sense. plus most ships that fit cov-ops cloaks are going to warp faster than 10 seconds, where on some BS/industrials the mwd+cloak trick lets them get into warp faster. that said if you are in safe space you can just pulse the mwd and not care about the cloak, and in general an afterburner will be even better as it has a shorter cycle time. That said it may be good tactics to pulse your mwd then cloak so it is harder for someone to decloak you.

It makes very good sense if you are in an interdiction bubble in a covert ops, stealth bomber, or recon ship.
Align + MWD + Cloak, change direction 90 degrees, coast out of bubble, warp
I've even managed to snag a 1600mm plated interdiction nullified T3 a couple of times, because his ship stayed in the same spot, was therefore easy to decloak, and took too long to get into warp.

There is a point in using a MWD with a covert ops cloak, and that is when you are trapped in a bubbled gate. You want to be traveling as fast as possible to get out of the bubble and be able to warp before they get a chance to decloak you.

Also, mwd + prototype cloak, while absolutely not perfect, does buy you some safety. It will reduce your "visible" align time a bit, and the act of cloaking/unloading can disorient a camper. If done in a frigate which naturally aligns fast, this may mean you can pass through many gate camps and casual gate encounters, if not the extremely sensor boosted ones.
The same holds for the afterburner+cloak trick, that has saved my ass a few times. |

thats the reaon i don use t3's for exploration, cov ops frigs are super hard to catch

I can 100% confirm that the prototype is not perfect. It is however better then praying to bob and hitting warp without the cycle and cloak. I've had indies use these against me quite effectively along with a couple of nanos until I got a bump in
