La Rynx wrote:Without further ado (click)The results complies to my own online experience. The lower the skills, the more aggressive to other, seemingly weaker players... If your statement is based purely off that study as summarised in the link, then how did you draw that conclusion? The study highlighted gender issues as quoted:
Quote:..lower-skilled players were more hostile towards a female-voiced teammate, especially when performing poorly. In contrast, lower-skilled players behaved submissively towards a male-voiced player in the identical scenario. This difference in gender-directed behavior became more extreme with poorer focal-player performance.
The conclusion you have drawn (more general in nature) isn't supported by that link, nor by the original study, with the full abstract:
Quote:Abstract Gender inequality and sexist behaviour is prevalent in almost all workplaces and rampant in online environments. Although there is much research dedicated to understanding sexist behaviour, we have almost no insight into what triggers this behaviour and the individuals that initiate it. Although social constructionist theory argues that sexism is a response towards women entering a male dominated arena, this perspective doesnGÇÖt explain why only a subset of males behave in this way.
We argue that a clearer understanding of sexist behaviour can be gained through an evolutionary perspective that considers evolved differences in intra-sexual competition. We hypothesised that female-initiated disruption of a male hierarchy incites hostile behaviour from poor performing males who stand to lose the most status. To test this hypothesis, we used an online first-person shooter video game that removes signals of dominance but provides information on gender, individual performance, and skill. We show that lower-skilled players were more hostile towards a female-voiced teammate, especially when performing poorly. In contrast, lower-skilled players behaved submissively towards a male-voiced player in the identical scenario. This difference in gender-directed behaviour became more extreme with poorer focal-player performance.
We suggest that low-status males increase female-directed hostility to minimize the loss of status as a consequence of hierarchical reconfiguration resulting from the entrance of a woman into the competitive arena. Higher-skilled players, in contrast, were more positive towards a female relative to a male teammate. As higher-skilled players have less to fear from hierarchical reorganization, we argue that these males behave more positively in an attempt to support and garner a female playerGÇÖs attention. Our results provide the clearest picture of inter-sexual competition to date, highlighting the importance of considering an evolutionary perspective when exploring the factors that affect male hostility towards women.

This thread lacks content. All you have done is link an article, referenced your own experience without detailing what that is, and summarise a minor point (general aggression) whilst missing the major one; behavioural differences regarding gender.

All i got from that article is that people who lose in a PvP game are more likely to abuse female gamers than they are male gamers.
Some people don't like losing, and they like it even less when they lose to a female; I think they feel emasculated by it.
Civilized behaviour is knowing that violence is barbaric, but paying other people to do it is business.

Also, I read somewhere that the average age of a Halo player (which is the only game the article looked at) is in his/her late teens, where the average age of an EVE pilot is in his/her late 20's.
No surprise at all that younger people act more immaturely when they lose than older people. |

Some people don't like losing, and they like it even less when they lose to a female; I think they feel emasculated by it. The expanded bit Scipio linked makes more sense, remember they're talking about people on the same team rather than victors/losers. Must admit I've never really thought about the social hierarchy side with people in competition over perceived status before.
I just thought the people who were arses to women ingame were wierd insecure basement dwelling midget virgins and left it at that. But thinking about it... it really does reflect some of the dynamics, because there's a huge amount of neediness emanating from the people who engage in that sort of behaviour, and it doesn't seem to be an age thing. I lurk for as long as possible in new corps and alliances without speaking in comms, then watch the massive shift in attitude with amusement. You get to hear people slagging off other women in the group at that stage and the stuff they come out is quite interesting.
It sounds very much like human pack mentality - and I suppose it shouldn't be surprising to see it manifest in a competitive/social environment. Thinking about it - other than the workplace - there are hardly any environments where social competition isn't divided by gender (I'm thinking sports). So maybe online gaming social interractions are highlighting behaviour that is normally tricky to evaluate. The only thing the report doesn't mention is how to address it going forward. A bit of awareness on the part of the 'alpha' males would help them manage online group dynamics.

BBC News's reporting of the study went something like this: -The guys who lost in Halo harassed female players more, comparatively -The guys came won in Halo were more courteous and gracious to female players, comparatively -Quick and simple conclusion (from the article): Halo Alphas had the self-confidence to be gracious. Halo Betas were frustrated, and vented their immediate frustrations. Which conforms to the results of other observations of Alpha-Beta behaviors.
The article's headline "Internet Trolls are Literally Losers" was clever, but kind of sensationalist, I thought. And it's kind of absurd to assume the behaviors of a narrow subject group (probably teens/younger males playing Halo) also apply across the board to every person socially interacting online. Still, kind of interesting. Sounded kind of like behaviors of Beta males in a baboon or chimp gang, really.

Not THE conclusion, MY conclusion. And, yes, it supports my impressions over a long period of time.

You repeated that, but i miss some argument other, than suggesting, i came to the wrong conclusion.

Sometimes playing any kind of online games, but in the real world too: Yes, its like behaviour in a chimp or baboon gang.
Yes, if you watch TV shows or movies, people are smart, fully conscious beings. In real life an, they are not. And there is a pecking order.
Best example are code monkeys. The lowest end of the pecking order in EvE. To feel better, they define hisec miners and hisec traders as lower class and put same hate into them, denying them respect., a group they can openly hate, since those do not have the most respect in EvE. To make it even more obvious, those guys babble about "elite" pvp, when they are the lowest kind of pvplers that exist. Only shooting at harmless ships. Like calling a guy killing 10 billion cockroaches an elite hunter and he would be superior over a guy that strangled a grown up bear with his bare hands. Because, those are results! Other techniques are to repeat lies until it is easier for them to believe them. And then they assume, if they believe it is true, others would believe it too.
Am i whining? Hell no! I never was their victim, they never came across my business. But i always had fun, to prove how pathetic these guys are.
Erica Dusette wrote: Always amuses me a little when people are left with the impression that CODE pilots are full-time mains.
