Something's been puzzling me for a while. If I find myself in (say) J115334, I can look that up and see that it's a C2 cataclysmic variable. If I'm looking at wormhole H121 I can look that up and see it leads to a C1, or perhaps even have memorised all the colours and know that without looking it up.
What I don't know is how this information was first determined. I can imagine some EVE player was in J115334, went "well, this looks like a C2 magnetar to me", and went and added it to a player-contributed database that became staticmapper and friends... except that I can't find anything to tell me how to do that "well, this looks like a C2 to me" step.
So, please enlighten me, wormhole dwellers; how were those databases first populated? Is it so prosaic as "CCP told us"? |

well from the kind of anomalies that are present in them I guess.
Since each class of wormhole has anomalies unique to their class (apart from the new shattered systems that can contain multiple different types) |

Now I'm not the most IT-savvy dude out there, but I understand that some people have found access to server database files that list things like this. This gives us the absolute specifics of the characteristics of sleepers, and also the C-class of systems in Anoikis.
Sure, you could just roll your static and write down the systems it connects to, but I don't think that's how it was done. I believe someone decoded data directly from the servers.
I believe this is how we discovered that shattered frig-only A009 holes were C-13 the new "Drifter wormholes" were technically classes C14-C18.
It all has to do with how they're characterized by the lovely Python servers we know as Tranquility.
As an aside, I believe that C-7 through C-9 are hisec, losec, and nullsec.
Did I get all that right? Can anyone clarify better?
The people who run the mapping programs (i.e. Jack Tronic of Siggy) would be able to tell you more I imagine.
Yeah, well, it's just like my-áopinion, man.

I should have thought of that, given that I grabbed a copy of the data dump around Crius and figured out enough Perl DBIx::Class to interrogate it. I'll take a look, but I guess it may be the prosaic answer. |

You used to be able to tell the wormhole CLASS by the color and movements of the wormhole entrance. |

Stuff like system classes, effects and wormhole destinations are in the static data dump that CCP provides for us third party tool devs. Statics are not. |

Don't mind how it is now, but I did rather like the old colours and wormholes...like the new visual more though...they should have mixed and matched the two...
Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."

database dump, and we had a guy work out all the statics, Its an involved story but that was back when wh's where new and exciting.
Alot of time was spent trying to determine if hole rolling was actually random, how site mechanics worked. how wh systems related to in game regions / systems.
you might like to read up in the lore area, the compass project.
Lots of interesting reading from the early days.

Thanks, all. Some interesting reading there, and a confirmation I'm not just missing some really obvious UI element that just tells me. I guess I'll do some flashcards with the colours or something. |
