Been playing EVE for a few months now and have noticed most players generally have at least one alt on top of their main character while a few (heard referenced as boxers) have around a dozen or more characters to mass mine resources at one time. Anyway, I commonly see 20k+ pilots a day. I was wondering if there was an overall estimated character to actual player ratio. If there isn't, please give me your best guesses.
I would guess 3:1 (3 characters per 1 player). |

There is no way to know.
Example: I have 5 accounts. I'm online with one most of the time, and for a very small percentage I'm online with 4 at the same time. I once had 7 accounts, and then I'd only be online with 6, because my computer couldn't really handle more than that. |

This is one of those things that is probably better not to know but I think your ratio is about right if I had to guess. But accounts, not characters as you can have three per account.

I hit the ratio. then there are a lot of people with more, and a lot with less. so seems like a reasonable guess.

i think it's a safe bet that most players are running with two, or more, accounts at any given time.

If you are talking active paying account I would say that your 3:1 sound close to correct but if you are talking logging in people I doubt it's much more than 1.5 : 1.
Yes many people have at least one alt account and there are some players with large numbers of them. However I think that the vast majority of player are more often logged on to just one account than they are multiple accounts. I sometimes only have 1 active and training account and sometimes I have 3 I once had 4 but wasn't using the 4th. I rarely use the third. Most days I log onto my main. Sometimes I'll log on to an alt as well but it's usually to do something like start a manufacturing job or lite a cyno then log right off of it when done. My main I stay logged onto sometimes even if I run out the the store for something. |

ergherhdfgh wrote: I doubt it's much more than 1.5 : 1. That would be my guess as well. It just depends what part of the game you are into. Some need cryno alts and scouts to move their capitals. Others need fleets to defend their j-space enterprises, and boxing results in instant reinforcements. Mission running? Not so much. Exploration, probably not. FW? for most stuff, not needed. It all varies some.

Yep, mine is pretty much 1:1. I have other accounts, but none active for years. I just like subcaps, mostly BS and various T2 frigs. Fly everything in between, but no need for extra accounts here. It's 1. farming 2. taxi service 3. force projection

If I remember correctly, CCP released a devblog a few years ago that the average for the entire playerbase was just under 2 accounts per player, with a lot of people playing just 1 account, and a few having 12-18 accounts. This was before the capability to train multiple characters per account, so "2 accounts per player" was equivalent to 2 main characters per player, at the time.
Not sure what the current numbers are; the increased restrictions to controlling multiple game clients at the same time may have driven away the 18-account people, driving the average closer to 1 main character per player. |

One account only here, 3 chars, my main (Tipa), a banker and one extra for "stuff". I would also guess the average number of accounts per real person is below 2.

I remember seeing the numbers on this a couple of years ago. If I recall correctly, the average was around 2 accounts per player.

Also confirming that the last known account-to-player ratio was ~2:1
I personally play with one account and I know more than a few others who play with only one account. However I also know 2 or 3 people with 3 to 5 accounts each... so it levels out to an average of 2:1

Since I started playing Eve in 2011, I have only ever had one account, and really only use this one toon. I did create an alt to check out orbital bombardment when Dust was released, but it never panned out. So that toon gets logged in about twice a year.
Personally, I think Eve is the perfect place for one acct, one toon. Alts are- almost universally- used to dodge game mechanics. Basically to circumvent the very things that make Eve difficult or interesting.
I enjoyed being an outlaw- flashy to everyone- when I was a low sec pirate. Actual consequences for my actions are what made those actions meaningful to begin with. The fact that since I joined a sov alliance, high sec is now by far the most dangerous part of New Eden for me...is again, what makes my decisions in game meaningful. I could dodge both by using an alt- but that's pretty weak as far as I'm concerned. I think Eve would be a better game if you only got one character per acct. (and I would still only have one acct)
I think most gamers are more impressed with the ability to 'work the system' than to be good at a game. Few want to actually play the game, instead they just want to 'beat' a game- usually by exploiting the fact that it is just a collection of coding. One of the main reasons I am still playing Eve years after I started- is because using only one toon makes New Eden far more interesting and dynamic. Your actions can and truly do affect the whole way you play. |

Some professions scale well as you add additional accounts. Before the input multiplexing ban at the beginning of the year, there was a mining fleet called UniMatrix that had at least 50 ships controlled by 1 player.
The 2nd and 3rd character slot on my accounts are filled with industry ALTS. These characters are trained for production, research, invention and PI - they only need to log in occasionally and briefly to deliver jobs and submit new ones. They only undock to harvest PI. None the less, they produce most of my income. |

Speaking of alts and income, I am guessing you are paying subscription fees for your alts. If so, wouldn't it simply be more cost effective to buy PLEX and sell it for direct ISK than to pay two more subscription fees to make extra ISK? |

You pay a subscription fee per account (that fee can be paid using PLEX purchased on the in-game market with ISK). There is no subscription fee for the second or third character on the account.
There is a fee if you want to train the 2nd and 3rd characters (multiple character training is 1 PLEX for 30 days for each character)
You can start a new character using a promotional offer like the Power of 2 - 180 days for $49.95 or 3 PLEX (https://secure.eveonline.com/SecondaryAccountSignup/) At the end of the 6 months training you can transfer the character to a vacant slot on an existing account - the transfer fee is $20.00 or 2 PLEX.
6 months training will get you a pretty good industry ALT and, once you get your business established, you can earn enough to buy PLEX on the in-game market to pay for your subscriptions and/or for additional multiple character training.
Only 1 character on each account can be logged in. For industry ALTS this doesn't matter - once you submit an industry job you can log out and it will keep running. |

It's not about making isk, so... just another fun character in a different part of the game. I don't buy plex, just regular account sub fee and aur to get the extra traing slot.
