As I started tonight's invention jobs, I found myself musing about how nice it would be if CCP would update the GUI to make industry less of a carpal tunnel syndrome inducing mess. Just as I dismissed it as wishful thinking that CCP would make any changes to the invention interface, I fell face first into a new one from the latest patch.
On the invention window after you pick your installation, the active hot button (the one that will activate when you hit enter) was changed from "OK" to "Pick Installation," a feature I've never seen the need to use after the installation was already picked. Instead of simply hitting enter, we now need to click OK. Sure it sounds like a nit pick, but it adds a 15th action to submitting an invention job.
1. Move mouse to BPC 2. Right click BPC 3. Move mouse to "Invention" 4. Click Invention 5. Move mouse to "Pick Installation" 6. Click "Pick Installation" 7. Move mouse to "Range" (Why can't the range default to 'Solar System', or whatever it was you last used?) 8. Click "Range" 9. Move mouse to "Solar System" 10. Click "Solar System" 11. Move mouse to selected installation 12. Move mouse to selected slot (In case I want my pick of which empty slot I use...) 13. Double click slot. 14. Move mouse to "OK" button 15. Click "OK" button
That's 7 click actions and 8 mouse movements. Repeat 10 times for 70 clicks and 80 movements.
Perhaps its time that CCP considered a new industry GUI? Pretty please!

This goes for when setting up or changing the makeup of PI as well, except it also mixes double clicks and single clicks, where some double clicks opens up an information window, and some double clicks finalize a connection. Manufacturing and PE/ME research is just as bad as invention, etc etc etc.
What CCP needs to do is have someone sit down and f.ex setup and change the output of at least 50 planets, then setup 50 manufacturing/invention/research jobs, and sit down in a group and ask themselves, "just how much **** did that experience suck? can we make this more streamlined?" |

I made this suggestion in the 'little things' thread as well as a few others. Just changing the focus to the logical order to install a job should be really easy to do. Not sure why it hasn't been done. Maximze your Industry Potential! - Get EVE Isk per Hour!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the industrial GUI's are unwieldy at best. What really annoys me, is a dev blog ages ago about how they developed a bunch of new tools to make redesigning all the GUI in EVE a lot easier to do. I also remember several years ago this topic was raised repeatedly, and there were a bunch of user supplied suggestions, including full graphic mock ups, by professional GUI designers showing several excellent possibilities.
I'm sure we'll see new interfaces eventually. I just hope their big plan isn't to make some "industry" room in WiS where we need to spend several minutes at 3 seconds per frame just getting our character to face some ill-conceived holographic projection.
