Yesterday I was in a large fleet fight and there were lots of ships on grid.
My FPS is usually 60, but I noticed that it dropped below 30 during the fleet fight, and also it dropped to 48 when there was a lot of fleet members on screen doing nothing.
I was wondering, is this lag caused by my system or the server? Here's my system:
AMD FX-9570 8 GB Ram 1866 mhz 500GB SSD Geforce GTX 970
Thanks

Your system.
The servers have nothing to do with your local rendering. Oh, and low frame rate isn't really GÇ£lagGÇ¥.

Impossible. Everybody knows Aegis Sov has completely eliminated large fleet fights.

100%, purely, your system. My old system would dip into single-digit FPS numbers during mass tests. My current system never goes below 60 FPS.

In large fleet engagements, I find that turning off the tactical overlay and then turning it back on resets my frame rate back up to 60.
Has nothing to do with your system if you're running a GTX 970, unless your settings for it aren't configured correctly, which is unlikely.

I see, what do you think is causing it, the CPU or graphics card?

Hardware looks good, but any system will struggle with large fleet battles. Also, make sure all unused background apps are shut off.
In the meantime turn down graphics settings.
P.S. Windows 10 works great. Many folks think they will look cool if they dis WIndows.

You can use your operating system to monitor the utilization on your CPU. I don't recall exactly what tool I used to monitor my GPU utilization, but EVE at 2560 x 1440 has never maxed out my GTX 980.

I wonder if recent graphics updates like PBR have caused things to be more taxing. I get a lot of choppiness when there are lots of rail guns shooting at me, like in Guristas Watch. Or that one part of the Vigil escalation that has a ton of ships. I don't remember that happening back in the day. Medium graphics settings, shadows off, AA off, HDR & Post Processing off, and "effects" turned off, and it's still too much for i7 930 with Radeon 5870. |

Not sure if this applies to fleet fights but turning shaders from high to medium helps my fps in dusty exploration sites. My system definitely isn't a light weight either though, but I still get dips with dust. |

Having experienced this exact thing, but with an added twist, I am starting to lean toward poor client optimization. Why? Because I run three sessions of Eve on different monitors. The one with the big fleet fight? Choppy, frame dropping, poor rates, the whole nine. The other two that I am using to shoot red crosses in a different system? Functioning flawlessly the entire time, without the whole setup even chewing more than 60% of my available resources. |

CPU for sure, those AMD cpus (I have one in my other pc) are well know for crappy FPS. Soon as I switched to one of the latest i5's my FPS issues were a thing of the past.

If you're running a Geforce card, Precision X (If it still comes with RivaTuner rolled in, without it I'm not sure you can get the OSD to show in game). MSI Afterburner I know still runs RivaTuner, it's what I use. For non-Geforce, I'm pretty sure I saw that MSI Afterburner works also, but I've never owned a Radeon card so can't be too sure.

I'd have one for RTSS (RivaTuner) if there was an official one, but most searches send you to outdated versions containing malware hosted on shady file hosting sites.

Defo AMD FX CPU.. Yes, for blob warfare, it's generally CPU dependent. Turning down shaders should help though too, but not eliminate the CPU dependency which is probably saving your GPU from melting.

Can you bug report this from the F12 menu next time you are able to resolve an fps issue this way? And send me in-game mail from the same account. Thanks.

Thanks, I'll check those out. In the meantime, it's actually my motherboard (Gigabyte) that has a utility showing GPU usage. Basically, a client with everything turned on will use 33%, whether in space or station. I haven't looked at utilization specifically during a large fight, however.

Turn off Aero (if you're a Win7 user). With Aero on Windows/CPU will render the screen "off-screen" in memory then send it to your graphics card (might not apply if you play full-screen tho) in order to get all fancy transparent borders, preview and what not. Turning it off will make the graphics card render the screen instead of the CPU.
I noticed this when I added a second graphics card to power a 3rd monitor, suddenly everything went slow as hell because Windows tried to render all three screens for me instead of letting the graphics card render and display each screen individually.
Turning Aero off my 20-some fps went back to 60 even with 5+ clients.

Odd, I get 300 FPS with a FX-8320 and GTX 970 (interval immediate) on 1080p
And 120 FPS at 3840 x 1080. That's with hardly anything going on of course, but it should be able to handle a pretty decently sized fight...

Don't know why folks are blaming GRAPHICS related problems on the CPU. Unless the CPU has an integrated GPU, the dedicated graphics card handles all the graphics processing; hence why it is called a Graphics Processing Unit.
I run an i7 950 with a nVidia 650 Ti on an ASUS GENE III MoBo w/ 8 gigs of RAM. If I set the interval to immediate, the FPS shoots to well over 100. My system is 5 years old this year and I can almost run GTA V on high.

Games do a lot more than just chuck the picture on the screen between frames.

I don't know if this still applies but back in the day turning off brackets in your overview settings helped a lot during big fights. For some reason drawing 2D brackets in 3D space took up more resources than you might think and didn't scale well with large numbers of ships/drones on screen.

The calculation for projecting the location of a 3D coordinate to a 2D plane based on a certain perspective and FOV is a ***** and a half and is very slow. Though if they some how handle it directly in DirectX it might be faster and something else is causing it...

When was the last time you checked and cleaned all fans and heatsinks?
The CPU & GPU may be throttling because of heat.
