Just trying to figure out more stuff with my inty setup and was trying to figure out how fast i need to go to outrun different missile classes. As a general rule, is the speed i have to maintain (in order to not get hit) the travelling velocity of the missile plus the explosion velocity? Im going about 4k/sec atm but am still having small although unmanageable damage from standard heavys. Cheers all

You could use the missile part of the player guide.
You'd even get a grafical feedback.
Make sure you have flash enabled in your browser - and that you do not try it with the ingame browser. --*=*=*--
The cause for this is not yet known, but we do have a possible fix in testing. by Sharkbait | 2006.09.20 |

I don't think you can run away from missiles nowadays, but as the previous poster said check the player guide and how going fast reduces incoming damage.

the missile guaide is out of date and does not work.
you can not escape from missiles ever. unless your running away from them with a ceptor. and i mean direcly away.

You can outrun missiles.
Missiles have a velocity, and they have a max flight time. If you can prevent them from arriving at your ship within their max flight time, they will burn out and disappear in space. The most obvious way to do this is by being out of their maximum range, defined by (max flight time)*(velocity). Another way is to exceed the missile's velocity while it is chasing you for long enough.
The relation between explosion velocity and target velocity is explained well in the official missile guide, stickied in the forum here.

So if you are very fast near the limit range of the missile you will outrun him since altough you are in range.. the patch to intercept you is larger than this range.

You can, more easily than before Kali. It's very easy to fit small ships to go 6000m/s+ now and quite a few battleships out in the wild outrun T1 torps now. :-P

Shameless plug but I recently updated my Missile Damage Spreadsheet which calculates all this with handy graphs.

More specifically the range of missiles depends on wether or not the target is flying towards or away from the missile.
Effective range of a missile is equal to the velocity of the missile + relative velocity of the target * flight time.
Basically if a target is flying towards you then you can fire missiles at them earlier. With missiles it's better to be the one being chased than doing the chasing.

Even if you are not going away, but perpendicular, like in orbit.. you will outrun him, since the missile route must be a hyperbolic turn that will be far longer than a straight line.
If your speed is 1/2 of missile and you are orbiting the enemy ship, the effective missile range decreases in about 25%.
