While I'm not a uber mission runner, I did want to try my mealstrom out for a few lvl4's (angels). I discovered it's a tanking MANIAC. At some point I got a whole room aggro'd and i tanked all the way through it!
My setup (and yes I don't have max skills yet) high 7 x 800mm 'scout' 1 x NOS
mids All 4 specific hardeners t2 (non angel I use only the relevant ones ofc) 1x inv field 2 (some battleshilps stay out of range so you might switch this one for an ab to be able to close the distance) XLarge CL-5 sb (can't use t2 yet)
Lows 3 x gyro t2 1 x tracking enhancer t2 (might want to fit a pdu2 or some other tanking mod) 1 x dmg control
10 x med drones.
Like I said it's an amazing tank for PVE, the lack of cap with the xl booster is a slight problem, but i managed to survive against some pretty nasty odds. If u're chicken you might also switch the tracking or a gyro for a wcs It gimps your lock time, but the range with only 1 fitted doesn't really matter it's still plenty for the close range ac setup.
Anyway, I'm in love, Thnx CCP! Also does anyone feel that this beauty looks like it's actually the size of a non caldari carrier?
I'm a reversed paranoid schizophrenic. I have voices in my head I just think I don't hear them! |

I haven't had the opportunity to do level 4 missions with it yet. But i've been fumbling around with the settings and had a 1on1 combat with a corp mate to test it. So far i liked it.
High: 6x 800mm 2x Siege ML
Med: 1x X-large Shield booster (CL-5) 1x Domination Shield Amp 1x 100mn AB (Lif Fuled) 2x Large Shield Extenders II 1x Heavy Electrochemical
Low: 3x Gyro's 2x PDS (t2)
I tried firt placing some resistances on it but i quite didn't like the outcome from it, so i tried to really work with the bonuses and this baby can boost back it's shields like there was no tomorrow. The only bad thing is if you are running out of cap the 'tank' is useless
There is still some work to do aswell, i will probably replace the Sieges with NOS's and such.
And yes, it's a lovely ship

Edited by: Najenna on 30/12/2006 05:45:59 You both have really good setups and mine is not far off from both of yours. So here I go
High Slots
8x 800mm Tech 2 Auto's
Low Slots
1x XL Shield Booster Tech 2 or Named 1x Shield Boost Amplifier Tech 1 or Named 1x Electrochemical Cap Booster (Use 800 cap boosters) 1x Afterburner Tech 2 or Named 1x Invul Field Tech 2 1x Passive Shield Hardener Tech 2 or Active shield hardener. Your Choice.
Low Slots
1x Gyro Stab Tech 2 2x P.D.U. Tech 2 1x Internal Force Field Array 1 1x Type-D Power Core Modification Capacitor Flux.
I am about to try this on my lvl 4 agent. I have tested on lvl 3 and I never hit my shield booster once. The reason I say use the passive shield hardener is so that you save cap.I like this setup for my skills and hardwiring's help also.
As far as the rig slots I have not given much thought but if you do I would go in the area for cap recharge and shield boosting area's. Once you get this Robotech thing in your blood its there to stay... |

8x 1200mm artillery or 1400mm artillery
0 or 1x web 0 or 1x sensor boost 1 or 2x tracking comp 2x invuln field 0 or 2x shield boost amp 1x large shield boost 0 or 1x 100 mn ab
2 or 3x gyro 0 or 1x dcu 2x beta cap flux
rigs: 2x cap regen 1x cap total
drones: 5x light 5x medium 1x web
Specific fit depends entirely on the mission and expected threats. The ship loves to be pimped, so improve with faction mods as your budget allows.

I decided to fly the Maelstrom after training for Hurricane and falling in love with Artys
My fit is for damage with the ability to tank if necessary
8x 1400mm carbines (working on t2)
1x t2 large shield booster (when i have advanced weap upgrades this will switch to XL) 1x multispec hardener (when i fit XL this will change to shield boost amp) 1x invul t2 1x therm, kin, and em t2 hardener
1x damage control t2 2x gyrostab t2 2x tracking enhancer t2
10 med drones
With this setup i get resists of 71/80/85/77, so almost an omni tank, and have a refire rate of 13.5 secs (very bad offensive skills atm), the tank will last for a couple of minutes continuous repping, and with 5 hvy shield maintenance on me, i can run pretty much every lvl4 ive come across, while dishing out severe pain between 25 and 55km.

It looks like he has someone else in mind for remote tanking, because it doesn't show any heavy shield bots in the setup.
Anyways, I've not tried it yet, but I have only just aquired one, and I am running:
Highs: 8 x 1400mm "Gallium" Artilleries
Meds: 1 x X-L C5-L, 1 x Photon Scattering II, 2 x Invulnerability Field II, 1 x SBA, 1 x Cap booster with 800s
Lows: 1 x Damage control II, 1 x Tracking enhancer II, 2 x Gyro II, 1 x PDS II
With another level of Adv Weapons upgrades, I can apparently run the Highslots without the PDS, but I may kep it for tanking goodness depending on how things go, and whether I cba to train the skill another level :)

For 0.0 guristas ratting i use
8x 1200mm prototype
1x XL CL-5 (t2 in 2 days) 1x Sheild boost amp 2x Kin harndener 1x Thermal hardener 1x Cap recharger
3x GyroIIs 2x Beta PDS
I have no problem with the biggest rats i can find (3x usurpers) and the only time it gets a little hairy is when i run out of cap from stupidly leaving my SB on when not paying attention.

OK going to get a maelstrom later and trying to plan some sort of fitting, couple of questions though...
How do you guys manage to fit 8x 1400s? Surely there isn't enough powergrid for them all? im not even sure that 8x 1200s would fit (or am i missing something - skills/rigs?)
Would you need an ab for lvl 4s? always used ab's for minnie ships and surely it is necessary to control your range??

Interesting that people seem to think arties are 'max damage'
If you want a fairly invulnerable tank try something like XL t2 / faction, 2 shield amps, 3 specific hardners
PDS II x 4, damage control II.
Should be able to run that booster almost constantly with skills and decent rigs, maybe a nos or two, and it boosts about 1200 per cycle - up to 1.8k with a 200 mil booster on. I use a varient in PvP and lets just say it's doing pretty well. Crappy dps tho, even with 800s on. But who cares, npcs die easy anyway.

I would use something like this for PVE:
8x 1400mm II
1x XL Booster 4x Hardeners of your choice 1x Shield Boost Amp/Cap Recharger
3x PDS II 2x Gyro II
Fits and should work nice :) And ofcourse cap recharge rigs.

I use this vs. Serpentis
8x 1200mm Arty IIs
1x XL SB II 1x Copasetic SBA 1x Invul Field 2x Kin+Therm Hardener IIs 1x Cap Recharger 2
2x PDU IIs 2x Gyrostab IIs 1x DCU II
3x Ogre IIs 2x Hammerhead IIs
Still not as good as a raven but nevertheless extremely good. It boosts over 1000 shield each time and often i find i dont need to run it, even when wiping out triple BS spawns. The good range allows you to kill the pesky rail rats, and even at close range i can track the BS well enough to gank them (although i do have to do some manual steering sometimes to get transversal down to 0)

I heard from a friend (who owns a mael) that its speed is a serious disadvantage and the she regrets buying it. but other people say it is a great buy. Who is right? and is it more of a short or long range ship? and does it have standard BS warpspeed, or does it have cruiser speed, like other minmy BS?

The awful tracking of artillery, her slow speed and her large sig means I can kill her with little or no difficulty yet. In fleet, at range, those 1400s are nasty, but the Rokh is superior anyway. All in all, for 145 mil its a decent price, but not worth the money. In PvE she can be a bit of a pain. EMP ammo for sansha's gives you 30 and bit + fall off while hunting angles with nuke ammo gives you 90 and a bit + fall off ranges. . . Unless you simply love the look of this ship, the Raven for PvE is superior to anything else out there period. And of course, a Abbadon does more dps and alpha, which takes away the only wow factor arti had. So, no speed, no dps, no alpha makes this ship sub par. If the ROF was a +damage, the alpha would become amazing even if the overall dps would drop like a rock. All in all, if you still insist on not using a Raven, the Typhoon is better. At least I will not try to kill you in my crow, while a Maelstorm is a walk in the park.

Just out of curiosity, how is a beam-laden Abaddon supposed to out-alpha... ANY artillery setup. You understand that alpha means the first volley, right? Because lasers fire for lower damage very rapidly. Projectiles fire for higher damage very slowly. My dual heavy beams w/ Multis have had a max hit of like 390ish so far. Heh.

There's a fair amount in here that I would disagree with. You don't use EMP on Sanshas, you use Phased Plasma. The damage difference is small, PP loads more shots into the magazine and has a better optimal. Fusion is for use against Angels, you're effective with it out to about 70 to 75km with 2 tracking comps. Range for effective fire with PPL, again using two tracking comps is roughly 65km, give or take.
Rather than relying on quickfit or the like, I used my combat logs to calculate dps. The Mael came in at between 200 and 780 depending on range and target transversal when using 1200mm II, 2 tracking comps and 3 gyrostabilizers. Obviously given the wide dps range, pilot technique will determine to large extent whether this ship is gold, or garbage for missions. If you find it's garbage, don't blame the ship, it's being used incorrectly.
There is no battlecruiser I have run into on missions that makes it past 2 volleys. Some cruisers are one volley, some are 1.5. At a rate of fire of 7.5, that's 15 seconds until you are in the process of destroying your next target. Time to kill the Seraphims in WC4: 60 seconds, exactly, and I'm not yet at max artillery skill (spec 3). The ship has plenty of dps and alpha.
Artillery may have poor tracking by itself, but toss a web on the ship, and combine with tracking mods, you can hit close orbiting cruisers with no problem. By alternating between close orbiting targets and targets orbiting at 22 to 24km, you can engage the web on your next close target while hitting targets out further. The result, is zero down time waiting for the web to take effect. This also allows you to ignore webbing drones completely until you are ready to launch your drones to mop them up.
Versus a Raven, I can't say. I never made it past skill rank 3 with the ship, as I hated flying it. Maybe someone that does use one would like to share their fastest kill time on a 1.2 million isk bounty mission battleship like the Seraphim or on Draben (Vengeance final boss, my time- 1:30 with the Mael.) for comparison sake.

Well, 1st off I've not flown a mael or even run the numbers in quick fit. Having read this thread I'm making it a priority to play around with one.
That said I have max arty skills and have been flying a pest for ages. Also regularly take a machariel out which is a pest on steroids and. Prior to this I flew a raven for lvl 4 missions exclusively. I can do all the level 4 angel missions in any of the 3 ships and the upshot is this. Short of dumping a load of isk into faction mods for the Mach, the Machariel is most fun, pest is most risky and Raven is fastest.
I doubt the mael will do it faster than the raven but would love to proved wrong. I'll give it a go and post my findings. (don't hold your breath though, newborn is only 6 weeks old so EvE time has been gimped :P) ______________________________ A closed mouth inserts no foot

High: 8x 1200 II (switch to dual 425 II when required)
Med: 3x specific hardeners (depends on what faction I'm fighting) 2x Shield Booster Amplifier II 1x Gist C-Type Large Shield Booster
Low: 3x PDU II 2x Gyro II
Rigs: 2x ccc's and 1 of the rigs that reduce shield boosting duration :)
The result: I can boost 528 shield per 2.7 sec = 195 shield per second. The booster can run forever :D And I can do considerable damage :)
any advice to better this setup is appriciated :)

Dont you miss tracking mods? A tracking pooter in the mids and track enhancer in the lows would prolly increase your damage quite considerably.

I am not the newsest player to EVE, but I am only a 3 1/2 month player. I find there to be a problem with my current set up and I am trying to find the "perfect" solution. My problem is getting jumped at close range
Highs 4 x 1400mm Prototype Seige 2 x Dual 425 Prototype 2 x Cruise Launcher
Mids 1 x Large Tech II Booster 1 x Sheild Boost Amp 3 x Specific Hardners 1 x Cap Booster 800
Lows 2 x Gyro IIs 1 x Tracking Enhancer 2 x PDS
5 x Light drones (tech Is) 5 x Medium drones (tech Is)
Questions were asked about powergrid. This ship has a base of 21k, with engineering 4 and 2 PDS gave me low 27k powergrid. This ship has plenty of CPU to spare also.
for close range combat this ship is inefficient. I just did one test run on a major level 3 mish, it tanked no problem at all, but the plan is for level 4s. How does a BS effectively take out close ranged ships? I can pop frigs at a range of 80km or so, but when a whole room gets aggrod, it takes too long to get the 400 resolution to accurately take out all the frigs and cruisers at close range (<15 km ).

HereÆs what IÆm putting together on my level 4 mission runner:
Highs: 8x1200 Scouts/Tech II (will try 1400sÆ when I have the PG/skills for it)
Mids: 1xTracking Computer II 4xhardeners, tech II or faction (switch depending on mission) 1xGist X-Type X-Large shield Booster
Lows: 2xCapacitor Flux Coil II 1xTracking Enhancer II 2xGyrostabilizer II
Rigs: 1xöEM resist rigö 2xöCap regen rigsö
Drones: 2xOgre (Tech II if You got them) 5xHammerhead (Again Tech II if You have the skill)
You might want to swap out either a gyrostab or the tracking enhancer for a Damage Control II, in case You are trying out a new mission, or if You run a very hard mission solo. It might buy You that extra time You need to get out, in case something goes wrong.
The maker/breaker in this setup is the named shield booster. It costs a bundle. As a matter of fact it costs a whole bunch of bundles (read: that module alone costs more than the rest of the setup and the ship). But once that booster is finally mounted, and online, You got Yourself one mean mission runner.
