So, why are the commentators using English pronounciation on Latin, Greek or Japanese words? C'mon, guys the ships are named after mythological creatures, the teams use normal words. Vox Populi, Hecate, Kitsune... Use friggn' Wikipedia, it has pronounciation :-) My ears hurt. |

The spelling isn't standard, no. But I generally forgive typographical (or orthographic) mistakes on a board. And as a chain of symbols conveying meaning (and a more accurate representation of certain colloquial pronunciations of the word, northern Scottish for one) "pronounciation" works.
Of course, equal slack could be cut for variant pronunciations of ship names. They're all just ways to convey concepts, after all.
But that doesn't stop me cringing when ever someone says "heh-kaah-tay" or "kit-soon."

Make a linguistic mistake while correcting others for the same error, and you get the troll. It's a rule.
Besides, he spelled it wrong consistently, so I'm educating too. |

As long as everyone knew what you guys were talking about ... it's all fine i guess for most people around here ... and at the end ... who actually cares about the correct pronunciation when watching the stream. It was all in real-time, and for alot of people who are not from the US ... i kinda expected them to pronunce the word as they are written down in combination with english spelling, i more wonder when someone comes with the "this is how it really sounds", because .... ehhhhh that sounds so weird sometimes :D
... and lets say ... in a fight, you rather take the word you get into mind for the ship you mean, then long time thinking about the correct pronunciation of it, which probably confused ppl and brings up a "what?" |

Well, sorry, I mispelled there. I'm not a native speaker. However, Latin and Greek are in a way basis for western education. Being English, Scotish or Icelandic is a lame excuse for some of the heresy that has been going on. When I hear "Vox Populi" in English, it makes me want to kill sheep babies.
Anyway, being half troll post, half serious, it makes me happy to get response from one of the perpetrators :-) And lesson learned on pronunciation. |
