I searched the forums on this topic and sorted by relevance. The last post was July so I figured I'd start a new thread instead of forum necromancy.
Does the skill drone navigation affect a drone's abilty to hit a target? This seems to have been an issue and I'd like to know if this is a skill I should avoid for now. On the old threads some said the skill drone sharpshooting could counteract the drones' inability to hit from higher drone navigation. Can anybody shed some light on this for me? ***** "It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma." -- Winston Churchill |

They fixed that bug a long time ago. And when it was still in effect, as long as your drone sharpshooting was equal or higher then your drone navigation you were fine. ----- Now if only my ! would disappear, I might be impressed. Five months and counting...

they fixed it and then broken it again. and sharpshooting does not help as it only increases optimal range, not tracking. You need tracking when orbiting at higher velocities.
here is the way to reproduce the bug. 1. load drones in bay, fit Drone Nav Comp(s) 2. undock 3. open overview settings, uncheck "apply only to ships" 4. launch drones, add them to overview, add velocity column to overview 5. wait about minute. note the orbit velocities 6. put DNC offline (or online) and note the difference.
I had Valkyrie I's velocities at about 580 m/s with no DNC and about 700 m/s with DNC. I doubt that they use different orbit velocity while attacking but will check soon..

Web something and your lights and mediums will stop hitting things. I have Nav 3 and sharpshoot 4, and my light/medium drones can only hit something if they're persuing it, not if they're orbitting it. This is true for targets of any signature radius. I don't know if it's a drone nav issue or just a broken drone issue, though.

Does anyone know if this affects Heavy Drones?

Edited by: Mnengli Noiliffe on 14/12/2006 15:42:37 if you use drones as primary dps dealers, Omni Tracklinks are the must in your setup. Unlike sharpshooting skill, they increase both optimal and tracking speed. 2 of them is great. 1 is minimum. to those who think drones are ok without those and without Drone Nav skill, I suggest you to try an easy thing - get into something with blasters, and compare your DPS while orbiting things and while standing still. You might hit while orbiting but your averate hit will be less than if you stand still. Same thing with drones. More tracking=more dps. And even when drones are chasing their target, omni links will improve dps as they will hit for more when farther from target (heavy drone catching up etc)

I know when I undo my web on smaller ships the heavies kill them but while webbed they cant hit the frigates. Possibly cruiser too though. Kinda dumb if you ask me :) My Character Stats

CCP just needs to add a +Drone Tracking Speed skill...or at least put that stat back into Drone Sharpshooting.
Seems like an easy fix...unless I'm missing something vital.

I can't log in right now (at work), but I'm wondering if someone could run a quick test with an omni-directional tracking link:
With an ODI, release drones, and check the orbit distance. Recall drones, offline the ODI, re-release drones, and check the orbit distance.
I know that boosting Drone Sharpshooting increased my drone's DPS, which was in steady decline as I trained up drone navigation. I assumed it was because drones would naturally orbit at their optimal. A larger orbit would offset tracking issues brought on by Drone Navigation. But I'm not certain, and drones may just orbit at a fixed range, regardless of what's optimal.
