I use T1 industrials to haul stuff about (Bestower etc.) and these can get up to about 40k m cubed in capacity. From there it seems the next jump is a freighter with 400k m cubed at over 1 Billion isk. Is there a middle ground that I'm just missing? |

Perhaps the Deep Space Transports are what you're looking for. The added fleet hangar can be used to haul fitted ships or other goods and adds a pretty significant amount to the total volume they can carry.

DSTs aren't much of a middle ground, a bit more room than the t1s, although you can tank them out the wazoo and not lose cargo space because instead of cargo space it has a fleet hangar.
orca not a bad side step, but mining forman is pretty useless imo.
freighters are pretty much the next big step. I have 2 characters that can fly them (and plankton is within a day, but will probably never train it unless I go for a jump freighter) as I'd rather just contract out my hauling. IMO ganking isn't a huge risk, but it is there, but for me it is more I just get bored waiting for the thing to warp. they go so dang slow. I suppose you can warp speed fit them, and get ascendancy implants, but meh. Other people will haul for almost nothing, I'll take (damn near) free labor.

With level 5 skills the DST will carry 62.5K m3 in the fleet hangar plus 4.5K in the regular hangar. You can get the regular hangar up to 17Km3 if you go insane with cargohold expanders & rigs.
Orca will hold up to 100Km3 (level 5 skill) in the regular hold if all available low and rig slots are fit with cargo expanders plus 40Km3 in the fleet hangar.

cargo expanders/rigs, also known as anti-tanking. might want to look at orca stats on a killboard.
on an orca: damage control and basic shield stuff, and rigs 236k ehp (my old fit from before hull tanking being viable) damage control, basic shield stuff, and hull tank 416k ehp (cuts into cargo space a little, note drops to 350k ehp if you drop the low slot bulkhead and replace with a pdu so you can fit a mwd) expanded cargo with cargo rigs 63k ehp. (fair enough it goes up to 144k if you drop an expander for a DCII, then 174k with shield tanked mids plus mwd)

The upgrade to a T2 hauler is more about survivability than it is about how much you can carry - as you have pointed out you're going from 40k-60k (if you spend enough time improving). If you are moving stuff around your home system, or just stock your mission hub with ammo, there isn't a need to go bigger.
The upgrade to the freighter seems to be your most obvious step if you intend to haul, and the extra 20k isn't sufficient. They are slow as hell and as plankton has pointed out there are very competitive prices provided by haulers (check out haulers channel) that might be an alternative option to your moving stuff needs.
Your initial query was regarding upgrading from the T1 hauler, IMO there are sufficient options out there, bar one area which has room for expansion.
If you intend to move:
low value stuff, with large space requirements - go freighter. high value stuff, with medium space requirements - go T2 haulers (DST/BR) high value stuff with low space space requirements - go Covert ops/Interceptor high value stuff with high space requirements - contract that stuff out! If hauling is low cost, local area, low volume and a sometimes thing - then stick to a T1 hauler
When I say there is one area that could be expanded upon I am talking of cargo specced freighters (like the bowhead) - I see room for such items as PI, ore and minerals (much like the varieties offered by the Gallente T1 Haulers). Perhaps modules that allow a freighter to be 'converted' to carry different item types in increased numbers, but at a restriction to other items? (this para is irrelevant to this thread)
Who the hell is this Tupac guy.... And what would he know?

I ditched my orca on the other side of the universe and cba to go get it. haven't had the incentive to see what fits and what doesn't

If none yet mentioned the mighty Orca, i would say - Orca. But with current price tag it's kind of hard choice but you don't have choice cause there is only Orca between them. So yeah basically Orca the only choice.

There's a bowhead for that. Hauling fitted ships around is the "endgame" of hauling. Not something you just jump into after your T1 industrial |

Under the old system gal industrial 5 would put you very close to the obelisk. A while ago the main requirement to fly a freighter was racial industrial 5, and I think advanced spaceship command 4. At least that is what my alt that can fly a freighter has. They have since switched the requirement so the main time sink is advanced spaceship command 5, and racial industrial 3. Over all it is a similar amount of training, but under the new system it is a lot easier to switch races.

So it sounds like the answer is... Orca?
