I don't know if they're connected, but my machine was hit by 2 very nasty worms while I was waiting in Amarr for the non-existant awards ceromony. I STRESS that you shouldn't automatically panic as it could be a coincidence, but I advise checking your system anyway.
Neither Norton anti-virus nor AVG were able to deal with them (although both detected them - although on a second run through the worms had infected both of them) and I had to find them myself (I'm a computing student and so have some knowledge in this area.)
If you were hit too the worms infect explorer (one of the main components of windows software) and begin by attacking random folders as well as going after your drivers and your system cache (if your computer has slowed down a LOT this could be why). If infected you find you've been infected IMMEDIATELY unplug from the net (trust me on this) and take it to a repair shop.
Like I said, these two incidents may well not be connected, but I thought it better to warn you all just in case.

Why take it to a repair shop? wth, if its that bad just reformat not worth the 20 dollars an hour they charge for labor and miscellaneous costs. Keep your virus definitions to date and have APPROPRIATE firewall ports closed you will not have much problem with virus/worm troubles. Beware the Spoons |

Not everyone knows how to clear the mbr when they format their computer. For that matter not everyone knows HOW to format their computer. Yes, many users do know how to do these things, but not all. Also, as I pointed out in the message the worms cleared the virus definition records for 2 of my anti-virus programs. Keeping them up to date is pointless if your records are continuously cleared anyway. A better piece of advice would have been to run a house call (housecall.trendmicro.com) or similar, something I should have pointed out. I'm just trying to advise all users, not just those of us who know what we're doing.

and, yes, I left a port open. But so might have others. I'm just trying to help.

Creslin, are you nuts? You say that you are a computing student and it is obvious to us software engineers that you are only a student, but don't be giving advise about something that you know nothing about. No computer needs to be taken to the shop because of a worm. Secondly, you might want to try to check symantec's site about hoaxes, because no worm does all of those things you mentioned. ------------------------- EVE of Destruction |

Good point Paland.
Symantec Security response site is:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/
There are also tons of free virus checkers out there and if you bought PC from big retail store, the Antivirus on that may have expired, but you can still download virus definitions for it.
Warning, may cause blurred vision, premature balding, and nervous twitching. Use as directed. |
